The Mets hosted the Yankees at Clover Park on Tuesday afternoon, securing a 5-4 win.
Here are some takeaways…
- Tylor Megill was impressive on Tuesday afternoon. The tall righty, pushing to make the No.5 spot in the rotation, saw his fastball sit around 94 mph and top out at 95.7 mph while mixing in a cutter, curveball, split, and slider.
Megill punched out six Yankees and walked two over his 3.0 scoreless innings of work. He threw 49 pitches (29 strikes), lowering his spring ERA to 1.13. Right now, it’s hard imagine Megill not having the edge in the race for the final rotation spot.
- Some of the big bats in the Mets’ lineup were on display in this one. Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor all notched doubles, with Lindor’s double driving in a pair, and Brett Baty showed off his sweet swing with a line drive single to right to drive in another run.
- Harrison Bader made his spring debut, playing center field and hitting seventh. Bader flew out in his first at-bat and was hit by a pitch his next time up. Bader was replaced by Trayce Thompson in the top of the fifth inning.
- Fighting for a spot in the big league bullpen, Phil Bickford pitched the fifth inning, but it didn’t go well for the righty. Bickford’s inning started with three straight hits, and he ended up allowing three runs on four hits. Bickford did pick off Brandon Lockridge at first base, but it wasn’t a sterling performance for him.
