The Nets are parting ways with head coach Steve Nash, the team announced Tuesday, after Brooklyn started the season 2-5.
Nets assistant coach Jacque Vaughn will serve as acting head coach for the Nets on Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls, and a decision regarding their next head coach will be made in the near future.
During his time at the helm in Brooklyn, Nash led the Nets to a 94-67 record, and won one playoff round.
There were only 16 games during Nash's tenure when the once-vaunted three-headed monster of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden played together. Harden was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers last season in the trade that brought Ben Simmons to the Nets.
Nash and GM Sean Marks had their roles challenged during the offseason when Durant issued an ultimatum asking the Nets to fire the two of them or trade him. Nets Governor Joe Tsai refused to acquiesce to that request.
In a statement, Marks thanked Nash for the job he did.
We want to thank Steve for everything he brought to our franchise over the past two-plus seasons. Since becoming head coach, Steve was faced with a number of unprecedented challenges, and we are sincerely grateful for his leadership, patience and humility throughout his tenure. Personally, this was an immensely difficult decision; however, after much deliberation and evaluation of how the season has begun, we agreed that a change is necessary at this time. We wish Steve, Lilla, and their family all the best in the future.
