Tampa Bay Rays special assistant Bobby Heck is not a candidate for a front office position with the Mets, according to league sources. He will remain with the Rays.

Heck’s name has been in the mix since before new owner Steve Cohen hired Sandy Alderson as team president. He had been under consideration, but the Mets recently changed their approach in their search for a top executive.

Now, Alderson is seeking not a president of baseball operations, but a general manager who he can mentor.

As SNY was first to report, former pitcher and current MLB executive Chris Young is a candidate for the position.

Heck declined comment. Alderson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
