The Mets and Cubs have talked about catcher Willson Contreras and reliever David Robertson, but have not yet exchanged concrete trade proposals, according to two major league sources.
Because talks remain preliminary, it’s too soon for either side to say if there will be a fit.
If you’re looking for clues about how a deal could ultimately look, know that last July the teams were close on a trade that would have sent Contreras and Craig Kimbrel to New York along with Javier Baez and Trevor Williams. During those talks, the Cubs expressed interest in Dominic Smith and, briefly, James McCann, according to sources.
This year, Tomas Nido would make sense as a player going back to the Cubs -- along, of course, with prospects. The Mets’ unwillingness to further deplete their top-heavy farm system could ultimately be a roadblock.
The Mets are also engaged with the Baltimore Orioles on Trey Mancini, per sources.
