The first Mets mystery candidate is a mystery no longer.

On Tuesday, team president Sandy Alderson said that he conducted the first interview for president of baseball operations on Saturday but declined to name that candidate. League sources say it was former Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill.

Hill, 49, attended Harvard and is a former minor league player, and had been with the Marlins since 2002. He earned raves in the industry for patching together a playoff roster in 2020 after the team experienced a major coronavirus outbreak, but was dismissed by CEO Derek Jeter at the end of the season.

He is currently the only person to have interviewed for the Mets’ top job. Some of the potential candidates already have president-level titles with their current clubs, making it difficult for the Mets to obtain permission to interview them.

A hire is expected within weeks, if not even sooner.

Alderson was not immediately available for comment.
