Kentucky head coach John Calipari will enter his first season since 2010 without a familiar face on his bench, as his former assistant coach, Kenny Payne, accepted an assistant coaching role with the Knicks and their new head coach, Tom Thibodeau.

Calipari took some time out Wednesday afternoon to give his well wishes and thoughts on the new Knicks hire.

Here are a few takeaways from Wednesday's Zoom call with Calipari:

On what kind of person and coach the Knicks are getting in Payne

Having been with Payne since 2010, Calipari has clearly gotten the chance to learn not just about his abilities as a coach, but as a man, as well.

"They're getting a great human being that cares about people, that puts himself behind the people around him, that is a servant leader in every way he can be," Calipari said. "As a basketball coach, he's got a great mind. ...His strength is the relationships he builds through player development — and it's both mental and physical — but that's his strength."

"And he can do it in a way where he can challenge and push and make them uncomfortable, yet they know he cares. They want to hang around the office, they want to talk to him aside from basketball."

On Tom Thibodeau's relationship with Payne

Calipari said that Thibodeau has been to Kentucky practices and games in the past, and wasn't only there to see players.

"He's watched Kenny," Calipari said. "And what he's been thinking is 'What do I want my staff to look like going forward?' He and I had a long conversation about Kenny.

On what Payne's impact will be with Kentucky alums Julius Randle and Kevin Knox

Knicks forwards Julius Randle (2013-2014) and Kevin Knox (2017-2018) both played under Calipari and Payne during their lone seasons in college.

"I know what's going to happen with Julius and Kevin Knox, I'll tell you right now," Calipari said.

"What I'm happy about the two that know him well, Julius and Kevin, is that I think you'll see a change for the better. "Obviously Julius has done well, but I'm saying that next step up. And Kevin, I told you guys what was going to happen, it was going to take him year or two to get going because of his age, he's so young."

On what "World Wide Wes" and Leon Rose bring to the Knicks

The Knicks brought in "World Wide Wes" William Wesley (executive VP/senior basketball advisor) and Leon Rose (President) into their front office this season in hopes of using their skills to rope in big-name free agents, something the team as struggled with immensely despite being in the No. 1 market in the country.

"Well the reality of it is, (Wes) is there to help Leon," Calipari said, "Wes' relationships, yeah they're going to help, but Leon's got his own relationships. ...Anybody that's ever been with Leon, even if they later left, will come back and say he's a great guy. And that means he's somebody you want to work with. That means that he's a man of his word."

On his overall outlook of the Knicks

With so many connections to the Knicks this season and beyond, Calipari seems to have a new favorite NBA franchise to root for.

"I'm friends with Thibs, he's a terrific coach. Obviously you all know about my relationship with Leon, my relationship with Wes. I want the Knicks to win and I want the Knicks to compete for a championship and I want the Knicks to win a championship," Calipari said.

"But my overriding concern in Kenny Payne, that's like my brother. And Thibs was on point...he knew why he wanted him on his staff with him."
