The Giants signed Austin Droogsma to be an offensive guard on Monday after rookie minicamp.

Droogsma is 6-foot-4, 345 pounds, so he has the size to be an NFL lineman.

Yet while it could be cliche to say he isn't like most players trying to win a roster spot for a pro football team team, it is accurate in this case.

How so?

Droogsma hasn't played football since high school

That's right.

Droogsma went to Florida State, where he competed on the Seminoles' track and field team. After redshirting the 2016 season due to injury, he, finished 12th at NCAA championships in the shot put in 2017 and seventh in 2018 with a 20.23-meter throw. He ranks second in program history in shot put.

Now that's strength.

But he isn't the first person in his family to be a track star at Florida State. His father, Mike, was an All-Metro Conference scorer in discus.

He was good in high school, too

Playing for Gulf Breeze High School, Droogsma had "a handful of major college scholarship offers," according to his FSU bio, but opted to compete in track.

As a high schooler, he posted a personal shot put best of 60 feet, 9 inches, and a 193-foot discus throw.

Olympics?

After NCAAs in 2018, Droogsma didn't rule out the possibility of competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

"It's kind of just a wait and see, and see who wants to throw money at you," Droogsma told the Pensacola News Journal's Shawn Medow.
