The lead swelled to 29 in the fourth as the Nets earned their largest win of the season.

A few times a year, they put their friendship aside to compete against the other and figure out how to get a win for their respective teams.

Monday night in Atlanta will be one of those instances as the Hawks get together with the Brooklyn Nets for the back end of a home-and-home set.

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony was fouled on his game-tying layup with 3.5 seconds left in regulation and should have been awarded a free throws in Sunday's quadruple-overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks, according to the NBA's two-minute report.

With the Knicks down 104-102, Anthony drove to the hoop as Paul Millsap guarded him. Millsap hit Anthony that affected his speed, quickness, balance and/or rhythm on the play, however referees did not call a foul.

The NBA's two-minute report said it was an incorrect non-call.

Anthony scored 45 points on 18-of-36 shooting before he fouled out. Millsap recorded 37 points and 19 rebounds while playing a game-high 60 minutes.

Paul Millsap had a season-high 37 points, including the go-ahead layup with 27 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime, and the Atlanta Hawks overcame Carmelo Anthony's season-high 45 points to outlast the short-handed New York Knicks 142-139 on Sunday.

The Knicks' first four-overtime game in 66 years lasted almost four hours. Millsap logged 60 minutes. Five players, including Anthony and Atlanta's Dwight Howard, fouled out.

Anthony scored the tying baskets at the end of regulation and the first overtime period, before fouling out with 12.9 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Courtney Lee sank a 26-foot tying 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining in the second OT and sank the tying free throws late in the third extra period.

Carmelo Anthony scored 30 points on 10-16 shooting, but it was not enough as the Knicks lost to the Atlanta Hawks 108-107 in a Martin Luther King Day matinee at Madison Square Garden Monday.

Derrick Rose added 18 points and nine assists, but missed a lay-up that would have given the Knicks the lead in the final seconds of the game. Anthony secured the rebound and had an opportunity to win the game for New York, but missed an open-look before the final buzzer.

Hawks PG Dennis Schroeder finished the game with a team-high 28 points on 13-16 shooting, while Tim Hardaway Jr. dropped 20 points on his former team.

Brooklyn is on a six-game losing for the second time this season and a loss on Tuesday will equal its longest skid of the year. The Nets are also 4-23 since Nov. 12 and 11 of 12 since a 10-point win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 14.

The latest defeat was a 105-95 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers Sunday afternoon, when the Nets gave up 13 straight points to open the second half and again down the stretch in the fourth.

Brook Lopez scored 18 of his 26 points before halftime as Brooklyn held an 11-point lead before getting outscored 32-16 in the third quarter. It was the 10th time the Nets were held under 20 points in a third quarter and the 29th time they were outscored in the third. >> Read more

In big wins against Dallas and Detroit last week, Kristaps Porzingis soared on the offensive end and received key minutes at the five position as Joakim Noah remained on the bench. With the veteran big man sitting out Sunday's contest against the Hawks, the Knicks figured to play even more small ball with Carmelo Anthony and Porzingis at the four and five.

While that did happen for certain stretches, there's no way New York could have gone small all game against a much more physical Atlanta frontline featuring Paul Millsap and Dwight Howard. With that in mind, rookie Willy Hernangomez received a well anticipated opportunity.

Kristaps Porzingis has become a matchup problem in just his second season with the New York Knicks.

The 7-3 Porzingis is listed as a power forward, but with his ability to hit mid to long-range jumpers, score on tip-ins and dunks and run the floor like a gazelle, he has created headaches for opposing coaches and their players.

On Wednesday night, Kristaps Porzingis had the game of his life. He poured in 35 points from all over the court. On Thursday, he failed to pick up where he left off and a slow start put he and the Knicks in an insurmountable hole. Porzingis added 16 in the defeat, but clearly didn't display that same level of dominance or fluidity in his offensive game.

At 21 years old, Porzingis is still coming into his own as a force in this league. He's just scratching the surface and his new teammates are still learning what he can do. As they develop even better chemistry, the Knicks are hoping their playmakers continue to find the young stud and set him up in the right spots. As good as Porzingis is, there's a lot of pressure on the Knicks to move the ball and for Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings to help elevate Porzingis' game. Porzingis may be the centerpiece of the future, but Carmelo Anthony is still playing at a high enough level. Even so, he too has unselfishly bought into the idea that this team needs to get Porzingis the basketball.

Tonight, the Nets look to make it three wins in a row when they host the Atlanta Hawks at the Barclays Center. The Hawks have been one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference this season, as they are the only team other than Indiana and Miami with a winning record coming into tonight. They are in second place in the Southeast division, and enter tonight as the third seed overall in the East.

However, Atlanta hasn't been a very good road team this year at 6-11, and like the Nets, they've lost arguably their best player for the season. Big man Al Horford suffered a torn pectoral muscle the day after Christmas, and the Hawks have struggled to a 2-3 record in the five games without him. After averaging 102.6 points per game on 46.1% shooting as a team before Horford's injury, they're averaging just 99.2 PPG on 40.8% shooting in the five games since his injury.

The Hawks and Nets split their four-game season series last year, but Atlanta has won seven of the last nine meetings between the two squads.

The latest trade news around the NBA involves none other than the Brooklyn Nets. League sources have said for days that San Antonio, Brooklyn and Charlotte all have strong interest in the Atlanta Hawks Josh Smith. It is highly unlikely at this point that a two-team trade with the Nets would work for Smith since Atlanta will not just give him away.

The latest scenario could involve the Cleveland Cavaliers entering into the mix.

The?Brooklyn Nets?are aggressively pursuing a trade for?Atlanta Hawks?star forward?Josh Smith, league sources told ESPN.Reports surfaced late last night from?Chris Broussard, via Twitter.?? According to him,?the Brooklyn Nets were "aggressively pursuing" a trade for Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks to fill their issue at power forward.

The Nets situation at power forward is a real problem for the team and it is becoming clear that an upgrade of some sort needs to be made.? Kris Humphries lost his job to Reggie Evans. But?while Evans brings the Nets a much needed tenacity and rebounding prowess, he is extremely limited on the offensive end, and that?causes problems.

Billy King will certainly be looking around the league to add a piece prior to the February 21st NBA trade deadline.

On Friday night, the Nets defeated the Atlanta Hawks by a final score of 94-89.

The Skinny: Deron Williams opened the game with a hot hand, scoring 10 points in the first four minutes. But just like Wednesday night, the Hawks shot lights out from the field early on, hitting seven of their first eight shots. Both teams shot a similar percentage from the field in the quarter, which ended in a tie at 29.

Andray Blatche scored the 11 of the Nets? first 14 points of the second quarter, but the game remained close. Hawks? reserve guard Louis Williams was taken off in a wheel chair after injuring his right knee. Jeff Teague and Devin Harris again used their speed to give the Nets fits. The Nets played better defensively in the second quarter, but they committed 13 first half turnovers. The game was tied at 49 at the break.
