It certainly has been an interesting beginning to the Nets? tenure in Brooklyn.

A roaring start was followed by a terrible stretch resulting in the firing of Avery Johnson. P.J. Carlesimo looked like he was the savior of the franchise, but an inconsistent stretch recently has brought the team back down to earth at the break.

NEW YORK ? Before the Knicks and Nets did battle for the fourth time on Monday, I had the opportunity to catch up with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.

I asked Mr. Smith his thoughts on the Brooklyn Nets as they approach the midpoint of the season.

NEW YORK ? That Avery Johnson was fired was not much of a surprise; the timing of it was.

After essentially agreeing to inherit a roster full of marginal talent and biding time until the Nets moved to Brooklyn, Johnson was given 28 games to show what he could do with a roster that was admittedly better than it was in years past.

P.J. Carlesimo is off to a 3-1 start as interim head coach of the Nets, including an improbable win against the NBA?s top team in the Oklahoma City Thunder. He'll look to make it 4-1 tonight when the Nets visit the Washington Wizards.

For Carlesimo, the win might have been a bit sweeter, since he was the first coach in the Thunder?s history. However, his tenure lasted only 13 games as he was fired after a 1-12 start.

Avery Johnson used the phrase ?Hello Brooklyn? as much as any member of the Brooklyn Nets organization, but unfortunately for him, he was the first member to say goodbye.

On Dec. 27, general manager Billy King announced that the Nets relieved Johnson of his coaching duties and named P.J. Carlesimo interim head coach.?Johnson finished with a 60-116 record (.341 winning percentage) in two plus seasons with the Nets, a far cry from the 194-70 record (.735 winning percentage) he amassed as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

In the aftermath of the Nets coaching change with Avery Johnson being relieved of his duties today, many people are trying to figure out who will be the next in line to take the Brooklyn Nets into the future.

Billy King stated today that PJ Carlisemo, a Johnson assistant, will be the interim coach right now and a wide-spread search will go on after the New Year.? Carlisemo has coached Portland, Golden State and Seattle/Oklahoma City in his NBA coaching career.

Who is at the top of the Nets wishlist right now?

BROOKLYN ? Brooklyn has become allergic to sizable leads this season at an alarming rate. To make matters worse, no over-the-counter prescription can rid Brooklyn of their allergic reaction during the third quarter this season.

As of December 22nd, in six of 12 Brooklyn losses, the Nets have squandered a double-digit lead.

Deron Williams was once universally considered an elite point guard in the NBA.

It?s no wonder the Nets sacrificed a huge trade package to acquire him from the Utah Jazz and then signed him to a five-year, $98.7 million contract this past summer.

Jason Kidd is one of Deron Williams' best friends and we all know that as they stated it numerous times during the offseason. Kidd gave some advice to Nets fans and all the people who are looking at Avery Johnson as the person to blame for Deron's poor play and rocky month of December.

What did Jason have to say about coach Johnson and his friend Deron?

NEW YORK ? The Brooklyn Nets were flying high only a couple of weeks ago, having defeated the New York Knicks at Barclays Center in the first ever "Battle of the Boroughs."

At 9-4, the Nets had the same record as the Knicks but were technically in first place in the Atlantic Division by virtue of the tiebreaker.

NEW YORK ? Actions speak louder than words and on Wednesday night in a 100-86 loss to the New York Knicks, the Brooklyn Nets looked like a team that quit.

But afterward, no player would point to the gameplan or lack of preparation for the dispirited second half effort, they blamed themselves.

NEW YORK ? After seeing the Brooklyn Nets drop their fifth home game in their last six attempts last night to the Utah Jazz, who came into the game with a 4-10 road record, I was curious as to how the game unfolded from the very last play to the beginning of the third quarter, when the Nets held a 13-point lead.

With just over one fourth of the 2012-2013 NBA season complete, the Brooklyn Nets sit at 13-10 ? good enough for second place in the Atlantic Division and fifth place overall in the Eastern Conference.

Not bad for a team that owned a 58-172 record the previous three seasons.

The Nets had a game in hand on Saturday night at the United Center in Chicago against the Bulls and let it slip away in the fourth quarter with a horrible final 1:30.? The Nets had a six point lead with less than six minutes to play when Avery Johnson took Brook Lopez out of the game because he hit his 24 minute restriction.

How did Lopez minutes restriction hurt the Nets?

In order to be successful, the Nets need Brook Lopez. And after missing all but five games last season, the concerns about his health were very real. That concern, though, extended to the rest of the team.

Heading into the season, the main key for the new-look Brooklyn Nets was developing chemistry, but health was a close second.

After a 10-4 start, including four straight wins and nine of their last 11, the Brooklyn Nets are about to experience a little bit of adversity.

The team announced on Thursday afternoon that Brook Lopez will miss the next two games, at the Orlando Magic on Friday and at the Miami Heat on Saturday with a mild sprain of the right ankle. X-rays on the ankle were negative.

There?s a chance Gerald Wallace will return to the Nets? lineup Tuesday night when the Nets play host to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but in his absence, the Nets have managed better than expected.

Any team?s defense will take a hit losing a defender like Wallace, but the Nets have not let that loss cripple them. Brooklyn has won two straight against the Magic after tough losses to the Timberwolves and Heat.

New York, N.Y. ? Nets head coach Avery Johnson announced Thursday that his newly-acquired six-time All-Star shooting guard Joe Johnson will continue serve as the anchor on the team?s second unit.

Through the first few preseason games, Johnson has seen plenty of action with the reserves as he tries to get comfortable with his new teammates.

Billy King did what was needed to keep Deron Williams?in the offseason and build a team worthy of a move to Brooklyn.? Nets management had their work cut out for them. They had to change the perception of the franchise.

The process has started and thus far, the?re-branding?effort seems to have been a success. Now, it's time for Billy King to be a bit patient.

On Saturday, the Nets will play their first preseason game as the Brooklyn Nets when they travel to Atlantic City, New Jersey to take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

For a while, we've been saying that the Nets are a pretty deep team, and coach Avery Johnson has echoed the same sentiments. Saturday's first preseason game will be interesting because we'll see some of the rotation ideas coach Johnson wishes to try out.

Earlier, we posted about "Nets Training Days," a feature that ESPN recently taped and aired today. In it, Mark Schwarz interviewed Avery Johnson, Joe Johnson, Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, and other Nets players about the franchise's move to Brooklyn and what it means for the community. ?It starts off with a "look back" at Brooklyn's pro sports history and what it means to the people of Brooklyn to again have a pro team to root for.

But it was Deron Williams, again, who said something noteworthy.
