Heading into the offseason, the Giants knew they needed to fill some holes to return to a competitive team in 2019.

The secondary was certainly one of those holes, as the unit struggled for Big Blue last season. Janoris Jenkins wasn't himself with his ankle injury when he was on the field, and the Eli Apple trade led to players like B.W. Webb to step in.

And that was only at cornerback. The Giants' offseason saw Landon Collins and Curtis Riley -- the Giants' starting safeties -- walk into free agency. So GM Dave Gettleman had some work to do to shore up a group that mostly contributed to the team being second-to-last in pass defense (252.4 yards allowed per game) in 2018.

NFL free agency will kick off next week around the league, and the Giants will be active in bringing in fresh faces to bolster their roster for the 2019 season. The Giants have a few holes that need filling, especially with Olivier Vernon and Landon Collins out the door.

Finding their replacements is a must, but there is also a hole at the cornerback position as well. The Giants seem to have faith that Janoris Jenkins will have a bounce-back year, but with questionable options behind him, some reinforcement is needed.

The Giants have supplemental round draft choice Sam Beal returning after missing out on his rookie season with season-ending surgery. There is also B.W. Webb that could come back in free agency, while Grant Haley was an intriguing player after coming off the Giants' practice squad mid-season.

Giants resilient against Bears 00:01:38
Pat Shurmur is proud of the squad for beating the bears in overtime. Saquon Barkley and Odell Beckham Jr. weight in on the 3-point victory

It got lost in the shuffle last week, when everyone freaked out over the way Saquon Barkley wa used in the second half in Philadelphia, but the Giants' defense was absolutely terrible. The Eagles rolled over them in the second half. The Giants defense couldn't get off the field.

They needed a big bounce-back game this week.

They seemed to have it. Then they blew it. And then they bailed themselves out in the end.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Giants cornerback tandem Janoris Jenkins and B.W. Webb?

A two-game winning streak for the New York football Giants has some NFL faithful rubbing their eyes in disbelief after the team's 1-7 start, but the pair of victories (on the road against San Francisco 49ers and at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) has the Giants looking at the lighter side of things.

The real double-take, though, for this club comes from a look at the team's secondary - more specifically, the starting cornerback tandem of Jenkins (20) and Webb (23).
