New Jets head coach, Todd Bowles, and defensive coordinator, Kacy Rodgers, first worked together in 2005 under Bill Parcells with the Dallas Cowboys. They went on to spend seven years working under the Hall of Fame head coach. Now that Bowles has taken over the reigns of his own team, Rodgers sees similarities between the two (Slater, May 15).

"Bill was very detailed oriented, knows what he wants, knows how to evaluate, really knew what he wanted in a player, knew how he wanted the players coached," Rodgers said in an interview with NJ Advance Media.?"Todd is very similar in a lot of ways. Bill was definitely on point. Todd is on point. They both know what they're looking for, both know what a player should look like, both know how they want the program run. I see a lot of similarities."

When Rodgers was asked about the influence Parcells had on his career he spoke highly of his former boss.

According to Art Stapleton of the Bergen Record (who is in Canton this weekend for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony), Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will be joined by several members of the Mara family in a show of support for former Giants head coach Bill Parcells, who is a member of this year's HOF class....

Team president and co-owner John Mara told The Record that his mother and Coughlin would be among those on a private plane scheduled to leave?Teterboro?Airport immediately following Giants' practice that afternoon.

"We'll give Tom some time to shower," John Mara said with a laugh. "As far as my mother, I asked her the other day if she wanted to go and she said, 'Of course.'

Bill Parcells won eight of eleven postseason games as Giants' head coach.

In the summer of 1986, I was playing golf with some family members at a course outside of Cleveland. My father was wearing a Giants' hat and I a Giants' shirt. Another foursome drove up behind us as we were readying to tee off.

In an ESPN Insider piece authored by former Jets and Chiefs head coach-turned-analyst Herm Edwards, Giants coaches Bill Parcells and Tom Coughlin both crack the top 20 coaches of all time.

Despite beginning his career in New York 3-12-1, Parcells earned the No. 8 spot atop Edwards' list. Parcells led the G-Men to two Super Bowl titles, using the good old-fashioned ground and pound attack en route to a Hall of Fame career.

"Parcells always inherited teams that weren't winning, but was able to turn them around using his program and his presence. When Bill Parcells steps into a room, you feel his presence," writes Edwards. "He has won everywhere he has been with a philosophy of having a big, physical defense and running the ball. And that has led to two Super Bowl wins and a terrific career."
Coughlin landed at the 15 spot on the rankings. The current Giants head man has also led New York to two Lombardi Trophies, which Edwards believes may also be enough for Coughlin to join Parcells in Canton.

Martin played 201 regular season games for the Giants between 1975 and 1988. He was a member of the 1986 Super Bowl championship team (coached by Parcells) and recorded a safety of John Elway in SB XXI. Martin was enshrined in the Giants' Ring of Honor in 2010.

I'm a little bittersweet about yesterday's Hall of Fame announcements, but like any subjective process, it's not perfect. Former Giant coach Bill Parcells made it in while DE Michael Strahan did not.

Congrats to Bill. No worries for Michael, who had to be disappointed, but think of the upside: He can gain election next year when the Super Bowl is held here.

Here are some snap reactions to Bill Parcells' election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this afternoon...per the Giants' official website:

Tom Coughlin: ?I don?t think there?s any question that Bill Parcells is a Hall of Fame coach. He has Hall of Fame accomplishments throughout his entire career. Parcells coached for a long time, he worked for a lot of different franchises. It was kind of surprising to me, after the first go-around, I thought, ?Why isn?t he in??

John Mara:"I'm very happy for Bill. This is long overdue. He's one of the best coaches in NFL history. He turned our franchise around. We went through a long period in the 1960's and 70's when we were a laughing stock. When Bill took over in 1983 he survived a very difficult first year, but then turned us into a perennial playoff contender and won two Super Bowls for us. He coached three other teams and everywhere he went, he had great success. I'm very happy that he will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame."

Here's some key stats and records set from the Giants' 41-27 win against the Browns yesterday.

  • The Giants moved into a first-place tie with the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost to the Steelers. Both teams own a 3-2 record.
  • The Giants are now 8-0 in their eight contests against AFC foes. They last lost to an AFC squad in September 2010 v. Tennessee.
  • The Giants' 27 first-half points was the most since they scored 35 against Seattle in November 2010.
  • This was the 10th time the Giants scored at least 41 points in the Tom Coughlin era.
  • The Giants' 243 rushing yards was the highest total since running for 301 against Carolina in December 2008.
  • Ahmad Bradshaw's 200 yards and 30 carries were both career highs. His old mark was 151 yards v. Buffalo in 2007.
  • Bradshaw was credited with the ninth 200-yard rushing game in Giants history. It was the first since Derrick Ward ran for 215 v. Carolina, and Bradshaw's 30 carries was the most since Tiki Barber has 32 v.?Philadelphia?in 2005.
  • The G-Men are 38-10 when a running back reaches the century mark. The Giants are 9-0 when Bradshaw does.
  • The win marked the 77th regular-season victory for Tom Coughlin, which tied him with Bill Parcells for second place all-time behind Steve Owen (153 wins).
  • Eli Manning threw 259 yards, his 24th consecutive 200-yard game. He now owns the second-longest streak in NFL history, trailing Dan Fouts, who had 45.

A year ago at this time, people were ready to run him out of town. A Super Bowl season later, Tom Coughlin's the toast of the town.

I'm a big Coughlin fan, so the reaction following?the upsetting?exit from the playoffs in January '09 and the?two disappointing seasons that followed was tough for me to bear. Last year, when no one really knew what to expect?coming?out of?the lockout, Coughlin turned in a superb year, leading the Giants to a Super Bowl win over the Patriots. It was Coughlin's second title with Big Blue, and yesterday, he was rewarded with a two-year contract extension (he's now signed through the 2014 season)?and?a big?raise ($20 million over the next three years). Much deserved.

Now the discussion has?turned to who's the better coach: Tom Coughlin or Bill Parcells? I guess this was inevitable once Coughlin?equaled Parcells' Super Bowl win total. There are so many factors that go into this one. For example,?are we talking about?who's the better?Giants' coach, or who's the better coach over the course of?a career??Let's take a closer look at what the debate's all about:

With his new contract extension, Tom Coughlin will secure second place all-time in both franchise victories and games coached. With one more playoff win, he'll be the team's all-time winningest postseason coach.

Steve Owen coached the Giants for over two decades way back when the ball was round, and his franchise records for longevity will be difficult for Tom to surpass. But Coughlin is not being measured vs Owen these days.?Lately, Tom is?being pitted against the legendary Bill Parcells, his former boss who?he will pass in both longevity and wins this season.

The WheelHouse gang debated the subject yesterday on the air, acknowledging Parcells' impact on the game while not forgetting Coughlin's...

Bill Parcells, the man responsible for resurrecting several NFL franchises - including this year's two Super Bowl participants - was shunned by Pro Football Hall of Fame voters today.

Both the Giants' Tom Coughlin and New England's Bill Belichick are direct descendants of Parcells' coaching tree. ?Both men had high praise for their old boss this week.

Former Giant GM George Young and Bill Parcells - the team's legendary coach in the 1980's - are among 26 modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Young, who had built contenders in Miami and Baltimore, was handpicked by then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle to run the Giants in 1979. He was the driving force behind the Giants' resurgence back to league prominence in the 80's. Young built the Giants from the ground up. He made QB Phil Simms of Moorehead State his first draft choice. After selecting North Carolina LB Lawrence Taylor in 1981, the team qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 1963. The Giants would go on to win Super Bowls XXI and XXV.

Young moved up to the league office after leaving the Giants in 1997. He was named NFL Executive of the Year five times. He passed away in 2001.

It is widely believed the 1986 Giants originated the tradition of dousing the head coach with Gatorade on the sidelines after a victory. As it turns out, although they perfected the ritual, they were not the first team to do it....

But where did the tradition start? In his excellent book, First in Thirst: How Gatorade Turned the Science of Sweat Into a Cultural Phenomenon, Darren Rovell wrote about how the Giants first began doing the celebration in a section titled ?The Inaugural Dunk.? Amazingly enough, it began as somewhat of an act of aggression!

Simms was the MVP of that game, going 22-for-25 passing with 3 TDs and was the first player to utter the phrase "I'm going to Disneyland (World)".

Between the notebook pages, the stats and the film there is a poison that is undetected.? This poison has drained the Giants offense and there winning ways for three years.? That overlooked key element is...Attitude.

This offense has no swagger.

This team should be able to close out games with ease and crush opponents at will.? Why is attitude so important?? Because the New York Giants have one of the most talented offenses in the NFL, but clearly lack the keys to start the engine.

From ESPN New York:

On a conference call with New York reporters to discuss his enshrinement in the New York Giants' Ring of Honor on Sunday night, [Bill] Parcells was asked about his future. And Parcells, who recently turned over control of the Miami Dolphins to general manager Jeff Ireland but remains with the team as a daily consultant, said he is open to doing something new.

"Well, that is a good question," Parcells said when asked about what his future holds now. "I am not a sit-around-the-fireplace guy. I don't know. I am not certain about it. We will see what happens when the time comes. I know I want to do something even if it is not day to day or something like that. I know I want to do something. I don't like sitting around. I like to get up and go do something. We will figure it out when the time comes."
