With every victory this fall, the Islanders establish stronger ties to their glory days of the early 1980s. It happened again Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum, as Jaroslav Halak tied a team record held by Billy Smith since 1982 in a 3-2 overtime win over Ottawa.

Smith won the Vezina Trophy that year as the league's top goalie.

While there's a long way to go in the regular season, Halak is being mentioned as a contender to become the second Islander to win the award (NJ.com, Dec. 2).

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- These days you'll likely find Billy Smith on the golf course rather than rushing home to watch a hockey game.

"I don?t watch much hockey anymore, to be honest. I?m a golfer," he said.

But the Islander legend is certainly happy to see his former team playing so well in their final season at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders are 14-6-0 through the first 20 games of the season and after Saturday night's win are tied for first place with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"One of the things that people didn't understand; they always thought there was this hatred of the Oilers and the Islanders," explains Wayne Gretzky in the video below, from the documentary Ultimate Gretzky. "That really wasn't the case. As a team and as players, we idolized the Islanders."

As you well know, the Islanders swept the Oilers in four games in 1983. The next year the Oilers would turn the tables and win the series in five games, ending one dynasty and starting one of their own.
