Giants CB Janoris Jenkins (ankle) is improving but is questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

"Noticeably improved over the last week," Jenkins said. "I've been getting better. Just got to continue to go to treatment and we'll see how it plays out."

"I practiced a little bit (last week). I just didn't feel comfortable. I let the guys know it and then got on treatment a little heavier."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - For the second straight day, injured cornerback Janoris Jenkins wasn't even outside for Giants practice, casting a huge shadow of doubt over whether he'll be able to play in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.

Jenkins suffered a hand and ankle injury in the Giants' opener, which apparently got worse as he practiced last week. Because despite practicing fully all week, he was unable to play in the Giants' loss to Detroit on Monday night. He tried to test out his injured ankle with trainers watching about two hours before the game, but they ultimately decided he could not go...

Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will make his season debut Monday against the Detroit Lions after he tested his sprained ankle during pregame warmups at MetLife Stadium.

Beckham will tape his ankles for stability for the first time in his career, according to ESPN's Eric Lundsten. Before the game, he was catching passes from quarterback Eli Manning and was seen stretching with strength coach Aaron Wellman alongside cornerback Janoris Jenkins and offensive guard D.J. Fluker.

Though Beckham was a limited participant in practice on Thursday and Friday, he will play in a game for the first time since Aug. 21 as the Giants look to avoid an 0-2 start.

Giants LB B.J. Goodson is out for the team's home opener against the Lions due to a shin injury, confirms SNY.tv's Ralph Vacchiano.

Goodson, who had a great season opener against the Cowboys, was a surprise to see listed as questionable on the team's injury report Saturday. However, head coach Ben McAdoo said it is an injury that occurred Friday at practice.

Scott Thompson, SNY.tv | Twitter | : This one hurts. If the defense had any bright spot last week against the Cowboys, it was B.J. Goodson and his 18 tackles. He was all over the field, and said that performance is what he brings to the table every night.

Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. will go through warmups before a decision is made on his availability for tonight's game against the Lions at MetLife Stadium.

He has been listed as questionable for the game.

Beckham has been nursing a high ankle sprain, and the team is more confident about him playing Monday night than they were heading in to last Sunday night's game, head coach Ben McAdoo said last week...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants knew they were returning almost all of their starters from last year's outstanding defense, but there was one player that Damon "Snacks" Harrison just wasn't sure about.

"I told him coming into this offseason that I wasn't a full believer in B.J. Goodson," Harrison said of the Giants new starting middle linebacker. "He was just a young guy at middle linebacker. You have to know everything. You have to get people in the right spots. He only played like 12 snaps last year so we didn't get a chance to see him. … It was just yet to be seen."

Then the 24-year-old Goodson had a strong offseason where he took control of a veteran-heavy defensive team. And then on opening night, during a 19-3 loss in Dallas, he was a dominant defensive force, making 18 tackles. Like all of the best middle linebackers the Giants have had, Goodson was all over the field.

The Giants defense may have been on the field for too long due to lack of offense, but they are not using it as an excuse for allowing 19 points in their loss to the Cowboys on Sunday night.

In the first half, the defense saw 47 plays from the Cowboys as the offense couldn't get anything going. The unit, which many believe to be one of the best in the NFL this season, looked fatigued. However, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie didn't want to hear that after the game.

"At some point you have to suck it up," Rodgers-Cromartie told The Post. "You just have to find a way to get off the field. We didn't get off the field enough."

Giants QB Eli Manning is slated to play during the Giants' second and third preseason games (on Aug. 21 and Aug. 26) head coach Ben McAdoo told reporters on Thursday.

Other notes from Giants camp...

  • CB Eli Apple sat out practice due to a sore ankle, and he's unsure whether he'll be ready to play this Monday against the Browns.
  • WR Dwayne Harris missed practice due to upper body soreness.
  • McAdoo said T Ereck Flowers was a "bright spot" during Friday's preseason opener.
  • LB B.J. Goodson (back) returned to practice.

Giants LB B.J. Goodson and DT Jay Bromley both showed they can make an impact on the defense this season in the preseason opener against the Steelers.

Goodson has been aggressive and vocal since the start of camp, and that is something the Giants' coaches like to see from someone who could potentially be the starting middle linebacker this season. Leading is an area Goodson has been accustomed to.

"I'm a middle linebacker, I have no worries about taking control and being the leader of a huddle, that's what I've always done," Goodson told NorthJersey.com's Art Stapleton. "I was ready to go. It was just another chance to continue building what we're building, and I'm confident I can do the job, do what I need to do for us to be great."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - B.J. Goodson has hit as hard as anyone out on the field at Giants training camp this summer. He clearly has no problem delivering some punishment to his teammates on offense.

But has anyone told him that maybe he should dial it down a bit against his own teammates with another five weeks to go until the games start for real?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants began the offseason with a heartbreaking playoff loss that left them with mixed feelings. They were crushed that they blew an 11-5 season and a terrific opportunity. But they were hopeful that they were on the verge of being a true contender again.

Everything they did this offseason was with that in mind. There's still a lot of work to be done when training camp opens on July 27, of course, and a lot can change between now and Opening Day on Sept. 10. But for now, here are five things we've learned about these Giants as their "offseason" officially comes to an end:

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.TV:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The middle linebacker is supposed to be the leader of the defense, calling the plays and making sure everyone is lined up correctly. And B.J. Goodson, a second-year pro, seems to be settling into that role nicely with the Giants.

In fact, he might be settling into it a little too much.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Antonio Pierce was a leader and one of the best players on the Giants' championship defense back in 2007, and no one has come close to playing better for them at middle linebacker since.

The Giants have high hopes, though, that B.J. Goodson can approach that level. They also hope Pierce can help.

The now-38-year-old Pierce is with the Giants this spring as a coaching intern, as he takes a short break from his job as the football coach at Long Beach Poly, a high school football power out in California. There are plenty of things Pierce can offer the players on the Giants' defense. But it's the 24-year-old Goodson who might just benefit the most.

According to Dan Salamone of Giants.com, QB Eli Manning was clicking with his receivers at the team's fifth OTA, making him a standout performer.

Manning let it fly down the sidelilne to wide receivers Tavarres King and Roger Lewis Jr., who are both fighting for reps among the receiving corps. The two-time Super Bowl MVP is looking to make 2017 his fourth straight 4,000-yard season. He amassed 4,027 yards, 26 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2016

One of the biggest criticisms of the Ben McAdoo offense last year - besides his play-calling - was the fact that they used "11 personnel" (three receivers, one tight end, one running back) on more than 90 percent of their plays. It led to cries that the Giants were too predictable and not nearly imaginative enough.

The Giants announced their deal with LB Keenan Robinson, which is for one year and is worth up to $4 million, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.

Robinson recorded 54 total tackles (83 combined) in his first season with the Giants in 2016.

New York had been trying to re-sign him prior to free agency beginning, though Robinson reportedly visited with the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills.

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports on how the Giants are preparing for their Week 1 showdown with the Dallas Cowboys.

Ralph Vacchiano, NFL Insider | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Ben McAdoo is just 39 years old and only 15 years removed from his days as an assistant coach in high school. By NFL standards it's been a meteoric rise from nowhere to center stage in New York as the man who has revive the Giants and fill Tom Coughlin's shoes.

So as he gets set for his first regular season game as head coach - in Dallas, of all places, against the arch-rival Cowboys - is McAdoo starting to feel a few nerves?

The 53-man roster is set (for now), and the New York Giants believe they will be back on the road to success after missing the postseason the past four years. Their roster has been upgraded in many key areas, with the exception of the offensive line and a blocking tight end.

But who will be the stars and the face of this club in 2016? It's clear QB Eli Manning and WR Odell Beckham Jr. will be among the top players in the league at their positions, but who else will garner Pro Bowl interest this year?

On offense, no one can possibly expect any of the linemen to get any type of recognition. Center Weston Richburg is considered one of the best players at his position, but the negative advance reviews on the Giants' offensive line is going to hurt his chances. The rest of the group has either struggled or was injured this summer, so the offense would have to play lights out for them to get any consideration.
