Although no New York-area teams made it to the Stanley Cup Final this year, the Empire State will still have a large impact on hockey's grandest stage. Twelve players from the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues have connections with the New York metro area in some way, so local fans still have plenty of reasons to tune in.

Boston Bruins

The Bruins have one of the largest collections of American-born hockey players of any team in the NHL. Not surprisingly, several of them have called New York home for at least part of their careers.

After allowing two goals in a 27-second span during the first period, the Rangers rallied to defeat the Blues Friday night, 4-2. Rookie goaltender Alexandar Georgiev made 44 saves, and his six 40-save games are the second-most by a rookie in franchise history behind Mike Richter's seven. Jimmy Vesey scored the go-ahead goal in the third and Chris Kreider's empty-netter snapped an 11-game goalless drought. >> Box score

The climb ended long ago for the Rangers (29-34-13), who are in the second year of a rebuilding project. New York hasn't won consecutive games since it headed into the All-Star break on a three-game winning streak.

The Rangers are just 8-14-6 since the All-Star Game and have fallen on especially hard times lately. Of New York's last six losses, five have been by at least three goals.

The defeat Wednesday embodied the issues facing the youthful Rangers, who trailed the Bruins 3-2 more than midway through the third period before allowing Boston to score three power-play goals in a span of a little more than four minutes. The final two goals were scored during a five-on-three opportunity generated when New York was whistled for having too many men on the ice 31 seconds before defenseman Brendan Smith was sent to the penalty box for high sticking.

ST. LOUIS -- Coach Ken Hitchcock and the St. Louis Blues are happy to be back home after a tough road trip.

The Blues saw their four-game trip end with a thud on Tuesday night as they gave up four goals in the third period, part of a string of six unanswered goals, in a 6-3 loss at Nashville in a game they once led 3-0.

The loss capped a 1-3 trip for the Blues which dropped their road record this season to 4-9-1. Only three teams in the NHL have fewer wins away from home.

NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders have spent the last week proving they can play with the best teams in the Eastern Conference. On Thursday night, the Islanders will get a chance to see how they stack up against the red-hot St. Louis Blues, who are the second-best team in the Western Conference.

The Islanders will host the Blues for the only time this season when the two teams square off at Barclays Center. Both clubs won Tuesday, when New York extended its point streak to five games with a 4-2 win over the New York Rangers while St. Louis kept rolling with a 3-2 overtime win over the East-leading Montreal Canadiens.

The Islanders (10-10-5) have gone 4-0-1 in their last five games -- a stretch in which they've beaten the Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, all of whom currently occupy a playoff spot -- to climb out of the NHL basement and move to the fringe of the East playoff race.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Frans Nielsen and Kyle Okposo scored in the shootout to lift the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Friday night.

Mikhail Grabovski tied it early in the third period for the Islanders, and Thomas Greiss, making his third start in four games, stopped 31 shots through overtime. He also denied both St. Louis shooters in the tiebreaker.

(AP) -- The New York Islanders likely won't have the same intense atmosphere from their latest game to spur them on in their next.

The Islanders, though, have proved adept at winning lately regardless of the environment and seek a season high-tying fourth consecutive victory Friday night against the St. Louis Blues.

A visit from the New York Rangers on Wednesday gave the Islanders their second capacity crowd in their first 15 games at the Barclays Center, and they rewarded those fans with a 2-1 shootout victory over their rivals.

The Islanders came back from a two-goal deficit in the second period, but ultimately fell to the St. Louis Blues for the second time in three games.

Thursday was also the team's third loss in a row. The Blues held a 2-0 lead in the second period, but goals by John Tavares and Mikhail Grabovski evened the score. Alexander Steen scored an early third period goal and the Blues added three more in the final 20 minutes.

The Islanders are still one point out of first place in the Metropolitan Division and are 19-10-0 on the season.
