Bobby Butler

The Devils placed Bobby Butler on waivers Sunday, hoping to sneak him back through to Albany. Unfortunately for New Jersey, he didn't quite make it there.

Obviously, this was always a possibility. It's probably why they held onto Butler for an extra game instead of waiving him when Ryan Carter was healthy. In situations like this, you want to be extra sure about the player in case you can never get him back. As I've said a couple times, I was a fan of Butler's shot and I thought he had some nice offensive potential. That said, the Devils gave him multiple chances in offensive situations, including long runs on the first power-play unit, and he never really delivered. If he could have finished on just a couple of those chances, he'd likely still be a Devil. Hell, he'd probably be playing 15 minutes a night -- but that wasn't the case. Someone with a shot like Butler's is always going to get extended looks. That's just how the league works. But if he doesn't start finishing those goals, he may end up as one of those perennial AHL/NHL tweener guys. The question now is who the Devils will call up to replace his spot on the roster. Hmmm.

The Bobby Butler experiment is apparently over.

Butler, who registered only two points in 16 games, was placed on waivers Sunday.

Butler had seen his ice time cut drastically the last two games. The forward, who signed with New Jersey last offseason after a three-year stint in Ottawa, was a minus-1 in only 5:19 of the Devils' 4-3 loss Saturday in Buffalo.

You may have noticed that a certain 6-foot right wing was almost nowhere to be found after the second period Thursday night. Bobby Butler, who had spent parts of the past three games skating with Ilya Kovalchuk on the Devils' top line, was eventually glued to the bench last night.

He played roughly six minutes in total and took just one shift in the third period. But why the benching? Pete DeBoer wasn't talking.

Alexei Ponikarovsky is back in black (and red). The Devils re-acquired the left wing in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a fourth- and a seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft. You may remember the Devils let Ponikarovsky walk in the offseason after he put up seven goals and 20 points in 33 regular-season games last season. He also had a goal and eight assists during the Devils' run to the Stanley Cup final.

So why bring Ponikarovsky back? You mean besides the gaping hole at left wing on the first and fourth lines? Kidding.

It looked scary when it first happened, especially the way Butler reacted, but it's likely just a very bad bruise.

That was such an impressive win for the Devils and it came after a poor first 10 minutes that may have been partly due to the earlier start. Regardless, the last 50 minutes of that game were reason for the Devils and Pete DeBoer to smile. Some thoughts...

Huge, Tom, huge: To borrow a phrase from TV car mogul Billy Fuccillo, there's not enough "U's" on the keyboard to describe how big of a win that was for the Devils. Not only because they beat a division rival that was one point ahead of them for first place in the Atlantic. Not only because they shut down the high-powered Pens offense for long stretches. Not only because they sent a message by rebounding from last week's 5-1 win. This was big because of how the Devils played after nearly getting run out of the rink in the first 10 minutes while the Penguins were all over the ice. Part of that was due to the three first period power plays, which took Pittsburgh out of its offensive rhythm, but also because Krys Barch stood up to Deryk Engelland roughly nine minutes into the first period. Engelland was running all over the ice, getting in David Clarkson's face and giving the Devils all sorts of trouble every time they tried to enter the Pittsburgh zone. After Barch fought Engelland, the Devils started to get some offensive momentum going and began to push back against the Pens. I know I'm not always a huge advocate of dressing a guy like Barch, but he was one of the big reasons the game turned around halfway through the first period.

So about that Bobby Butler guy...

Not quite sure what to make of this. The 30-year-old Anderson has seven goals and 13 assists this season for Albany. He was took part in training camp with the Devils prior to the 2010-11 season, but has never played an NHL game. For more info on Anderson, visit his AHL bio page here. As for Butler not getting the call, it's a little confusing, although it makes sense when you notice he started training camp on the top line and ended on the last. He obviously struggled to impress on an NHL level and they may want someone more steady and defensively responsible to play on the last two lines.

The Devils demoted Mattias Tedenby to their AHL affiliate in Albany on Monday -- a move not all that surprising given Tedenby's limited minutes in recent games. The question now is who will replace him on the roster. Adam Henrique's not quite back yet and in the end, he'll likely take Stefan Matteau's spot. Could it be Bobby Butler, who was one of the last players cut in training camp two weeks ago?

Via Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice:

That sounds like it could be right wing Bobby Butler who gets the call after playing in tonight?s AHL All-Star Game in Providence.

Tedenby, who will turn 23 on Feb. 21,? had no goals and one assist in the Devils? first four games of the season.

As we wait for Bobby Butler to clear waivers or be claimed by another team, the general expectation is Mattias Tedenby will be recalled to take his roster spot (UPDATE: Devils confirm he'll be recalled at noon). Judging by the morning skate, he'll take LW on the second line with Patrik Elias at C and David Clarkson at RW.

Also, looks like Adam Larsson will be among the inactives tonight, meaning Henrik Tallinder will likely be on the third defensive pairing.

The Devils will look to mine offense from secondary sources this year. As we discussed yesterday, David Clarkson will be part of the equation, but the Devils will need more than that to remain in playoff contention. For this, they'll have to look a little deeper and if you've been paying attention through the first few days of camp, you'll have noticed a trend: Bobby Butler playing in key situations.

Via Tom Gulitti of The Record:

Through the first three days of camp, he?s been skating on a line with first-line center Travis Zajac and today he practiced on the first power-play unit.
