In a battle between the only two Brooklyn Nets participating in this year's Olympics, Luis Scola and Argentina came out on top against Bojan Bogdanovic and Croatia, 90-82.

Right from the opening tip, Scola dominated. His 13 first quarter points helped Argentina jump out to an early lead, a lead that would get as high as 20 points by the third quarter. However a furious comeback led by Bogdanovic and Dario Saric cut it to a mere four point game with 30 seconds left. A somewhat controversial foul on Croatia's (and Orlando Magic) Mario Hezonja led to technical fouls on both the Croatian head coach and assistant coach. Once Scola made two free throws, the game was pretty much over.

Scola finished with a game-high 23 points to go with his nine rebounds and two blocks. The Argentinian shot 8-for-15 from the field, and once again showed his ability to knock down the three pointer by going 3-for-5 from long range. Scola did struggle from the free throw line, missing five of his nine attempts. This was unusual for Scola as the power forward is a career 74.2% shooter from the charity stripe.

In the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, it was the play of Bojan Bogdanovic that secured Croatia an opportunity to play in Rio. Bogdanovic scored about a third of his country's points in that tournament, and as Croatia began their Olympic play on Sunday against Spain, the Brooklyn Net looked just as strong.

Bogdanovic scored a team-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-8 from long range and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. The sharp shooter added three rebounds, two assists, and one block in his 36 minutes. Just as he did in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Bogdanovic was responsible for about one-third of Croatia's points.

The guard's stellar play was very important as Croatia outscored silver medal favorite Spain 25-16 in the fourth quarter, and ended up winning 72-70 in what was one of the big early upsets in the 2016 Olympic Games.

On the day when the Nets parted ways with Joe Johnson, his replacement eased Brooklyn's pain.

Making his first start since January 8, Bojan Bogdanovic played 38 minutes and shot 8-for-16 from the field en route to a season-high 24 point performance.

"He was really our leader," Bogdanovic said of Johnson. "Everybody knew we needed more effort. We are trying to play a little bit faster than usual, so we play a lot of secondary offense. After a couple of their bad shots and turnovers, we hit a couple of threes and that gave us confidence."

Brian Erni, SNY.TV Twitter | Archive Posts

Right after Johnson was bought out on Thursday, a friend of mine asked me if Bojan would benefit the most from the extra playing time. It surprised me how pessimistic I was when I answered, because I really do like a lot of what Bogdanovic does on the floor. This has just been such a strange season for him that I didn't feel confident even saying he'd get more minutes than Thomas Robinson. Way to prove me wrong, Bojan!

It was such a breath of fresh air to see Bogdanovic get cut loose. He got plenty of reps, had some plays run for him, and really looked like a piece that could be the focal point of an offense. That's what the Nets have envisioned all these years, and maybe the absence of Johnson is just the opportunity Bojan needs to try to reach that level of consistency he's been striving for. On Thursday, it certainly seemed like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Maybe this is the beginning of a break out for the Nets' former Euro stash.

After splitting their last four at home, the Nets embark on a season-high nine-game trip that runs through March 11. They've dropped six straight on road, are 4-19 as the visitor this season and have lost 16 of 19 in Portland.

The Nets will likely need a proficient offensive performance to end those struggles, as they've lost 21 straight when scoring under 100 points since a 94-91 win over Phoenix on Dec. 1. That streak was extended with Sunday's 104-96 defeat to Charlotte.

Brooklyn was able to trim a 15-point deficit to four with 4:42 left before the Hornets used a 9-0 run to pull away.

Brooklyn dialed long distance on Friday, and had no problems connecting.

The Nets shot 64.3 percent (18-for-28) from beyond the arc, led by Bojan Bogdanovic (7-of-9 from three). Joe Johnson had a game-best 27 points, Brook Lopez scored 26, and Bogdanovic tallied 23 off the bench.

"The ball was moving so well, especially from the second half on, and we got great looks out of it," Lopez said. "We backed up the ball defensively. We were all there for each other, and we played almost the entirety of the game."

Ball movement? Open looks? Who are these guys?!

If only this could be every night. I know the Kings are having problems of their own, but Sacramento has plenty of talent, and the Nets just came out in full attack mode and put them on their heels. I really couldn't get over how fast the ball got around for Brooklyn. It looked like a completely different offense than we have grown accustomed to seeing this year. When guys had open looks, they drilled them. And I know I have been lamented the bench play all season, but do you see how much a difference it makes to have a player step up on the second unit?

Bojan Bogdanovic is headed to All Star weekend to take part in his second consecutive Rising Stars Game. But despite the symmetry, his sophomore season finds him at a far different place than a year ago.

The now 26-year-old came into league with tempered expectations. Three years after being drafted by the Heat, traded to the Nets, and stashed in Europe by Brooklyn, Bogdanovic came into the league as an intriguing case. He was older than the typical rookie but had to adjust to the American game. By the end of the 2014-15 season, the results were solid. Bogdanovic averaged nine points in 23.8 minutes per game.

But in expanded minutes this season, Bogdanovic has been hit or miss. According to Basketball Reference, he has nearly as many negative game scores (six) as he has posted a double digit positive game score (nine). His point per game production is similar (9.5 per), but in more time on the floor (27 minutes), essentially equating a net negative. The comparison isn't necessarily fair, with the Nets' point guard position in great upheaval, but it's still notable enough regression that makes some wonder if the Croatian is indeed part of the long-term solution in Brooklyn.

The Nets are looking to tear it down, and one report says that Bojan Bogdanovic could be the first piece to go.

The Sporting News's Mitch Lawrence says the Hornets have checked in on Bogdanovic's availability.

"GM Billy King is conceding privately what we all know: The Nets aren't making the playoffs. So it's time to start breaking up the team. So far, Charlotte has called to try to deal for Bojan Bogdanovic, the team's top 3-point marksman, Sporting News has learned," Lawrence writes. "If Joe Johnson doesn't get moved at the deadline, he's seen as a prime candidate for a buyout."

The Nets found a way to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory in Orlando on Wednesday night.

Despite Brook Lopez's double-double (24 points and 15 rebounds) and Bojan Bogdanovic's 20 points, the Nets were outscored 32-20 in the fourth quarter and coughed up a lead down the stretch. After taking a 93-90 advantage with 1:43 to go, the Nets went 0-for-4 from the field and turned the ball over twice in the final minute and a half of the game.

"Executing under pressure is important and I don't think we handled the pressure well," Lionel Hollins told reporters after the game. "We didn't focus, we didn't work to get open, we didn't work to get in the positions you need to get in and in the last five minutes of a game, you're a little tired and sometimes that is what pressure will do to you."

Bojan Bogdanovic has finally rediscovered his game.

Bogdanovic played 38 minutes and shot 8-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-7 from deep, en route to a 19 point, five rebound performance.

"He made shots and he was aggressive," Lionel Hollins said of Bogdanovic's performance. "We would like to hope that this is a turn-on switch for him to have a series of games where he scores in double figures and shoots the ball well."

?lkan Karaman

Bojan Bogdanovic (31st overall in 2011) and Ilkan Karaman (57th overall in 2012) are a pair of European prospects recently selected by the Brooklyn Nets, and both got to test their skills against some NBA competition.

There are high hopes for each of these youngsters, and if they're anywhere near as good as Mirza Teletovic seems to be, they could contribute meaningfully to the Nets sooner rather than later.
