Nat Berhe didn't play in a game in his second season with the New York Giants and learned a lot about life in the NFL.

It can be taken away very quickly.

The safety missed all of last season with a calf injury that turned out to be a little more than a pulled muscle. He developed a blood clot in the leg and had to have it removed.

The Giants officially announced they have signed DT Barry Cofield to stabilize the interior of the their defensive line.

Cofield was the Giants' fourth-round pick out of Northwestern in 2006 and was a starter on the defensive line until 2010. He left the club in 2011 via free agency, signing with the Washington Redskins, who released him this past February after he missed eight games with ankle injury.

Cofield, 31, had hip, ankle and abdomen issues this year and attracted little interest until the Giants came calling. The defensive line has taken some major hits this season, most notably with Jon Hankins, and now Markus Kuhn's status is in question with a knee injury.

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is having a rough time, to put it lightly, in his second stint with Big Blue.

He is trying to field a defense out of second-stringers, castoffs and rookies and it has showed in the results, or lack therof. The Giants have allowed 423 yards per game this season, 31st in the NFL. At 314 yards per game, they are the only team in the NFL allowing over 300 yards through the air each week.

Of the Giants' 296 points they've given up this season, they have allowed 116 in the fourth quarter and overtime this season. Their secondary has allowed 12 passing touchdowns in the first three quarters combined, and 11 just in the fourth.

With teams cutting down their rosters to 53 today, the Giants will have some options. ?Here are some names worth a look:

Brandon Meriweather (Safety) - By far the biggest name/ surprise of the cuts so far. ?Meriweather was the Patriots' first round pick out of Miami and the 27 year old has played in the past two pro bowls. He has talent, but he obviously clashed with Bill Belichick. ?The Patriots' coach is rarely wrong, and Meriweather may be overrated, but he is absolutely going to be scooped him immediately.

The Giants could use secondary depth, but the depth at safety is very strong (they already have two former Miami safeties as it is). It's not a perfect fit, and he'll likely get picked up with a team where he could start, but he's definitely worth a look.
