4:29PM: On Brandon Pirri coming back in, Alain Vigneault said "he has done a good job for us. He has been out for a while but there is no doubt that his shot and his release on the PP was an effective weapon for us. I wanted to get that back in. We are 7-1-1 but we seem to be talking about our PP a lot. It's obviously not clicking the way we would like but we will put Pirrs back in and hopefully he will help us there."

2:32PM: Pirri spoke this morning and said that he needs to produce to stay in the lineup and that he isn't worried about things he can't control. (NYR)

On the PP, Pirri said that the Rangers need to simplify and that with the amount of playmakers the Rangers have "there wasn't that one guy, where every time he got it he was shooting the puck. For me, if I am hitting the net then it breaks down their PK and allows the more skilled guys to find those guys back door." (NYR)

Pirri said "shoot the puck, it's pretty simple." (NYR)

Alain Vigneault announced earlier today that Matt Puempel will return to the Rangers lineup tonight and that Brandon Pirri will be scratched.

Asked to explain why the change was being made, Vigneault said "I want to get Puemps in, I thought he was coming along before he got injured. Pirrs' play has slipped a little bit, for whatever reason. We have talked about it a couple of times and he is not getting the same looks that he once was on the PP. Even though he did have a good PP outing there a couple of nights ago. Consistency with what he has to do on the PP and 5 on 5 needs to be better and that is why we made the change."

Puempel will play his first game since being concussed against the Islanders nearly two weeks ago.

Brandon Pirri was on Sportsnet 590 radio Saturday evening and said the following:

  • On how he ended up with the Rangers, Pirri said that he hoped to sign on July 1 but instead had to wait and was "fortunate" to get an opportunity with the Rangers which he says has been "fantastic" so far.
  • On how he has adjusted to being with the Rangers, Pirri said that the "core" players have been "great" to the new players and that the transition has been quick in terms of chemistry.
  • He says that the Rangers main focus is on playing fast.
  • On Jimmy Vesey, Pirri said that he came in as a mature player and that his line has the puck a lot. "He's gotten better every game and that is what everyone in the organization expected of him and needs from him moving forward."
  • On his role with the Rangers, Pirri said that a big part of his role is on the PP and when he joined the team he was told "shoot the puck, you aren't getting paid to pass it."
  • He played on a line as a kid with Tyler Seguin and Reilly Smith.

Pirri said on MSG after the game:

  • On his goal, "we were up by a goal. The first responsibility is to be smart defensively but we are still trying to score and step on their throat. We talked about getting pucks to the net and then you gotta crash, you won't get pretty ones all the time and Kreids made a great play. We talked about it before, take a shot, crash the back door and throw it blind, I was fortunate to be there in the right time."
  • On team speed, "especially my line with Grabs who can fly and Quick is such a smart hockey player and can skate too. Makes the center's job easier when they are pushing the D back, gives some more time and space and I think that is pretty clear with all four lines, not just our line."
  • On when 2-0 became 2-2, "there was no panic. It was an awesome thing to see, a lot of maturity and leadership. We knew they were going to push but at the same time we needed a pushback and I think we did."
  • On the Broadway Hat, "It's pretty cool. I don't know how I look in it but it's pretty special to get it in my first game."
  • On the team's win…"It's awesome obviously when things are going good. The team's winning. Everybody is happy, and usually you are going to be in the lineup when you are winning. That's the most important part tonight, that we won, and I'm just looking forward to the next game." (NYR Game Notes)
  • On competing for playing time…"Internal competition is a good thing because it drives us each to get better every day. We are all pulling for each other. At the end of the day it doesn't matter who is playing the minutes as long as the team is winning." (NYR Game Notes)
  • On the Islanders pressing in the third period…"We knew they were going to come. I don't think we liked to give them the odd man rushes that they got but at the same time they have some talented players over there. I thought we did a great job. We were a real resilient group in here and at the end of the day we got the two points." (NYR Game Notes)

1:30PM: On Pirri centering the fourth line, Vigneault said on Thursday "I think we are in the process of identifying who goes with who and what makes this team the best team that it can be. There are still quite a few things up in the air. I would say that we are no different than most of the teams. Every team has probably given themselves between 10-20 games to figure things out and when I talked at the beginning of the season about having three lines that could play fast and generate a bit more offense and have guys more as PKers. When I said that in an ideal world I'd like Hank to play so many games, those are all things in an ideal world and you need to sort things out as you move forward and that is what we are trying to do."
