While much of the attention from the Jets' loss to the Patriots will be focused on the controversial overturned touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Jets only have themselves to blame for giving up 24 unanswered points and letting New England back into the game.

Nevertheless, they gave a good account of themselves and, despite some glaring weaknesses, continued to prove that they're a more talented group than most people gave them credit for before the season...

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets won their third consecutive game on Sunday, but this was a performance that was very rough around the edges. The Browns gained almost twice as many yards as the Jets (419 to 212) but kept shooting themselves in the foot whenever they had a chance to score.

In the second half, the Jets converted in the red zone to take the lead after a Browns turnover, before putting together a 97-yard drive for what would prove to be the clinching score.

Let's start this week by focusing on the offense:

The Jets continued to confound their critics on Sunday, eventually pulling out a win over the Jaguars in overtime after having blown a 10-point fourth quarter lead. Big plays in the running game and effective pass coverage sparked the win, which was finished off by Chandler Catanzaro's game-winning field goal in the last minute of overtime.

Let's start this week by focusing on the offense...

Jets RB Matt Forte (toe) is out and DE Muhammad Wilkerson (shoulder) is questionable for Sunday's game against the Jaguars at MetLife Stadium.

TE Jordan Leggett (knee) is also out, while RT Brandon Shell (shoulder), and LB Josh Martin are doubtful.

Wilkerson, who played Week 3 despite a Grade 1 strain in his AC joint, had tests on his shoulder that revealed no structural damage. However, he may need to deal with the injury all season, head coach Todd Bowles said earlier this week.

Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson had tests on his injured shoulder that revealed no structural damage, but Wilkerson may need to deal with the injury all season, head coach Todd Bowles said.

Wilkerson, who played during the Week 3 win over the Dolphins, did not practice on Wednesday and said afterwards that he has a Grade 1 AC joint sprain and will try to play through it.

TE Jordan Leggett (knee), RT Brandon Shell (shoulder), RB Matt Forte (toe), and LB Josh Martin (ankle) also missed practice.

The Jets surprisingly hung around for the best part of three quarters, but eventually the game slipped away from them and the Raiders came away with the anticipated blowout win. Aside from a couple of ill-timed turnovers, the run defense was the biggest issue in yesterday's game.

However, we're going to break down the performances on the offensive side of the ball first...

Jets right tackle Brandon Shell will make his first visit to Oakland Coliseum on Sunday when New York faces the Raiders, but he won't be the first Shell to play there.

Shell's great uncle, Art Shell, was a Pro Football Hall of Fame left tackle for the Raiders between 1968 and 1982, leading Oakland to two Super Bowls and going to eight Pro Bowls.

"I've seen some tape of [Art Shell] and Gene Upshaw from when they played back in the day," Shell, 25, told the New York Post's Alex Squadron.

Shell will likely have to try to block Raiders defensive end Kahlil Mack, who has emerged as one of the NFL's top defensive players as he has forced seven fumbles and recorded 26 sacks since 2015.

The Jets' season got off to an inauspicious start with a 21-12 loss in Buffalo. Questionable coaching decisions, poor communication in the defensive backfield, an overly conservative offensive gameplan, and inconsistent tackling all contributed to the loss. However, the Jets still kept the game competitive into the fourth quarter.

Let's break down the performances on the offensive side of the ball:

Quarterbacks

From the outset, it was clear the Jets were going to operate a low-risk, short passing game. Josh McCown operated this gameplan efficiently for three quarters. He led an 11-play, 75 yard drive to bring the Jets within two points late in the third quarter. But from that point on, he threw eight passes, three of which were intercepted -- although one doesn't officially count because it was on a two-point conversion attempt. McCown completed just three of those eight passes for eight yards...

The word that defined the Jets during the offseason was "rebuilding" - unless, of course, you were Jets GM Mike Maccagnan. To him, it was all about "competition". And with a roster in flux, he certainly has created a lot of that.

Whether that's a good thing remains to be seen, and depends on the talent he has assembled. He will have plenty of training camp position battles to watch, though.

Here's a quick look at the Top 5..

Coming out of South Carolina, Brandon Shell's size and athleticism stood out, but he also impressed with his technique in pass-protection and his discipline. He posted outstanding pass-protection numbers against some good teams and when matched up with pro prospects. That bodes well for his ability to be successful at the NFL level, although he's not the type of tackle you'd typically leave out on an island.

Preseason Stats: Four games, one start, one sack surrendered.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said he was disappointed with the team's 5-11 finish this season, and wouldn't put a timetable on when they would be a perennial contender.

"We're obviously not happy with our record. But I do think we made some progress [with the youth]," Maccagnan told reporters while alluding to players such as OL Brandon Shell and CB Juston Burris. "We have some pieces we feel good about."

Maccagnan said he felt comfortable signing Ryan Fitzpatrick this past offseason, noting that all options -- internal and external -- will be on the table for 2017 at quarterback.

There's a chance that Breno Giacomini could miss Week 1 of the season.

Head coach Todd Bowles said that, at this point, he doesn't forsee Giacomini missing the first game, but didn't dismiss the idea completely, according to Seth Walder of the New York Daily News.

The Jets have been playing Brent Qvale, Ben Ijalana and Brandon Shell at right tackle so far in training camp, in case Giacomini misses time, according to Rich Cimini.
