The Devils, who lost Urbom to Washington via waivers at the start of the season have claimed the Swedish defenseman off of waivers from the Caps.

[UPDATE 12:25] Because Urbom cleared waivers, he can go back down to Albany and apparently, that's where he will start, as per TG via Lou Lamoriello.

Though it was never clear when Ryane Clowe would return from what is being described as a concussion, it seems like the big winger is on his way back.

Defenseman Seth Helgeson has been called up from Albany on emergency recall, after Stephen Gionta was placed on IR, as per Rich Chere.

Helgeson gives the Devils a bit more flexibility on defense, should they need to sit someone tonight or Friday against the Hurricanes.

With Adam Larsson out due to a lower body injury, that left the Devils with only six defensemen after Jon Merrill was called up from Albany as well. Larsson's ailment is on top of injuries to Bryce Salvador and more recently, Anton Volchenkov.

Devils Defenseman Alexander Urbom has been picked up by the Washington Capitals after the Devils placed the young defenseman on waivers yesterday.

This is a puzzling move for New Jersey, as there were certainly a few other options to be sent down with a far lesser risk of being picked up. Not to diminish the play of Stephen Gionta, but sending him down, even if it was just for a few games, might have been a smarter move than to expose Urbom to waivers.

The NHL announced Thursday that Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov will be suspended four games for an elbow to the head of Bruins forward Brad Marchand roughly 15 minutes into the second period of Wednesday's game. The full video from Brendan Shanahan is below:

The suspension means Volchenkov will half of the Devils' remaining eight regular-season games.

It's one game more than I thought he could get, but I'm not surprised the NHL went up to four after watching the video. Shanhan harped on a few things. One, Volchenkov extended his elbow to the point where it became "reckless elbow contact to the head" of Marchand. Two, Marchand tried to avoid the hit and turned his head, but it doesn't change the fact that Volchenkov didn't pursue the puck and turned what could've been a legal body check into an illegal elbow. Three, Volchenkov was in control of the play and in control of his body and clearly pursued the elbow to the head instead of playing the body. Shanahan also referenced Volchenkov's prior suspension and Marchand's injury (likely concussion) as factors, so at least the NHL admits a player's injury status affects how they rule. When you watch the video, it's hard to disagree with the four-game ban, which is often the case with Shanny's home movies.

Bryce Salvador left Thursday night's game only minutes into the first period after taking a hip check along the boards. Salvador's right hip appeared to be the principal point of contact and he could barely put pressure on the leg as he glided off the ice. Salvador went directly to the locker room.

The Devils dressed seven defensemen tonight so they'll be OK if Salvador can't return.

UPDATE: According to Tom Gulitti, Salvador just returned to the bench.

The Bobby Butler experiment is apparently over.

Butler, who registered only two points in 16 games, was placed on waivers Sunday.

Butler had seen his ice time cut drastically the last two games. The forward, who signed with New Jersey last offseason after a three-year stint in Ottawa, was a minus-1 in only 5:19 of the Devils' 4-3 loss Saturday in Buffalo.

Martin Brodeur was scheduled to see a doctor Tuesday before the Devils decided how to proceed with his injury. Well, it appears they've made a decision:

This means Brodeur will miss at least two games (Thursday and Saturday), three if you include Sunday's late scratch. Should we worry that all the miles have finally caught up to Marty or are the Devils just being cautious with their 40-year-old netminder? Maybe a little of both. Outside of Ilya Kovalchuk, Brodeur is the most indispensable player on the roster and you could argue he's more important than Kovy. Expect Johan Hedberg to start one if not both of the games Brodeur has missed with Keith Kincaid Kinkaid being added to the active roster as a backup. We'll have more on this later, but I wanted to get the news up for now.

Ilya Kovalchuk will be out of game 2 against the Philadelphia Flyers. He has be listed as day to day. Yesterday he was not with the team due to going to therapy for an injury that was sustained in the first round against Florida. They are calling it a lower body injury. Tim Sestito is in Philadelphia with the team but DeBoer is unsure if he will take Kovalchuk's spot in the lineup.

It was obvious in recent games that Kovy has not been 100%. This certainly will make things harder for Coach Pete DeBoer when it comes to line?combinations. Hopefully this is not a serious matter for Kovalchuk. The Devils need him to be 100% if they want to beat a very tough Philadelphia Flyers team.

I think this would be great for Zidlicky and the Devils. He will provide great depth for the Devils as they hope to move up in the standings. If the Devils don't have to give up too much for him it'll be a great deal for the Devils.

The Fourth Period is reporting that the NHL may have to advance the Devils $20 million to be able to pay the payroll for the rest of season. One of the biggest contracts on the team is soon to be free agent Zach Parise.

Now it is already suspect that Parise may not be back with the team next season but it seems like the Devils may not be able to afford him for the rest of the season. So it may seem that the Devils might have to trade Parise for draft picks to ease up on some one the payroll.

This is troubling news for the Devils because there is no doubt that Zach Parise will bring in revenue next season should he resign but could really hurt the team off the ice should he depart. Definitely give this a read.

The Devils acquired Alexi Ponikarosky for prospect Joe Sova and a 4th round pick in this year's draft. He will be in the lineup this afternoon when the Devils play the Philadelphia Flyers. Alexi will play on the 3rd line with Jacob Josefson and David Clarkson. To make room for him on the roster the Devils have sent Mattias Tedenby down to Albany.

I think this is a great trade for the Devils and hopefully will give the Devils 3 solid lines that can score on a consistent basis. Ponikarovsky is a great depth player whose contract expires at the end of this season. If things workout for him in New Jersey hopefully he'll resign again.
