In NFL.com's Around the League's latest NFL quarterback rankings, Eli Manning landed in the 7 spot, under the category of "Franchise Gold."

Manning is one of four quarterbacks to be placed in this second tier of rankings along with Drew Brees (4), Ben Roethlisberger (5) and Matt Ryan (6).

Brees, Big Ben and Manning all own Super Bowl titles, and Ryan appears poised to follow suit sometime in the near future, as his Falcons were a mere 30 seconds from having an opportunity in 2012.

David Carr, who has backed up Eli Manning for four of the last five seasons, will likely leave the New York Giants and seek a back-up opportunity elsewhere.

Apparently, he wants a backup gig with more opportunities for playing time.

Carr, 33, will be a free agent on March 12, and reports have surfaced connecting the quarterback to a handful of destinations. Among them: the Cardinals, who are desperate for depth at the position, and the Buccaneers, where former Giants assistant Mike Sullivan is the offensive coordinator.

A couple of numbers stick it out from yesterday's 34-0 rout in Atlanta.

Offensively, the Giants turned the ball of three times, two of which were interceptions complements of Eli Manning. The two-time Super Bowl MVP completed all of 13 passes, no touchdowns, and finished the contest with a 40.7 quarterback rating.

But it's zero -- the number of points Big Blue scored -- that's glaring. It marked the team's first shutout in 16 years.

As I stated in my game prediction, there was too much on the line for Atlanta when they welcomed the Giants into the George Dome this afternoon.

The Falcons, now 7-0 in their own friendly confines, proved that with a shutout of the defending Super Bowl champions.

On the defensive side of the ball, Big Blue had no way of containing the Falcons multifaceted attack. Atlanta dominated in every possible aspect in this match-up.

Giants? offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has been an NFL coach for nearly 24 years. During the majority of that span, the late Jim Johnson, renowned for his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, served as the epitome of defensive coordinators in the league.

One of Johnson?s disciples, former Giants? defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, is now the defensive coordinator for the Saints ? the Giants opponent this weekend.

Gilbride said that he's seen this type of defense at least twice a year during his coaching tenure.

The Giants play the New Orleans Saints, a team they've played only 26 times since 1967, winning 14 but losing four of the six meetings since the millennium began. ?These teams and the cities they represent could not be anymore different. Sunday's game will finally see the Giants play the Saints outdoors in the cold rather than the comfy confines of the Superdome.

From Tom Coughlin's conference call with Saints media pool...

Is the green zone the 30-yard line??Green zone is what you call the red. The 30 (yard line) is the fringe.?

In the conversation of elite quarterbacks, we always hear the names Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

Earlier this season, Eli Manning?s name was included in the bunch, and usually Drew Brees? name is scattered in there, but only after the others.

But Brees? name should always be included in the list of elite quarterbacks and probably higher on the list. It?s not his fault that the Saints have had a bad defense in almost every year of his tenure.

Eli Going Back Home Where Brees is New Favorite Son

Two teams in the thick of the NFC playoff race will meet this coming Monday night. The Giants (6-4) are currently tied with Dallas for first place in the NFC East while the New Orleans Saints enter Week 12 with a 7-3 record and a one-game lead on Atlanta in the NFC South.

Eli Manning returns to his hometown and the site where his father, Archie, played quarterback for the Saints (1971-82). Manning leads the NFL with a 120.5 passer rating in the fourth quarter this season, throwing for 1,081 yards and 10 touchdowns.

?Obviously, we have to go win,? says Manning on the importance of this game. ?That is always going to be the case since we have a tough road ahead. We have a good team coming up this week and we just have to find ways to play more consistent football throughout the game.?

Ex-Giant legend and Washington Redskin color man Sam Huff has thrown down the gauntlet in front of New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees.?

Brees had recently made comments to the effect that the current players should not have to pay for the retired players' "bad business decisions" that have left many of them broke, struggling and in some cases, destitute.

Huff took umbrage when he read Brees' statement. ?From our colleague Evan Weiner at newjerseynewsroom.com....

Watching yesterday's game was painful, I need not tell you that.? It has been awhile since the Giants were completely ravaged in such an ugly manner: the Divisional Playoff vs Philadelphia; the inexplicable loss to the Browns on MNF and the two home whippings in 2007 to Green Bay and Minnesota.

What pleased me yesterday..........

about the Giants' play - nothing - but FOX did relieve us of having to listen to the caustic wit of Joe Buck (who is doing the ALCS).? Thom Brenneman, who is primarily a baseball play-by-play man, did a great job bringing Giants fans in from the ledge by calling an even game with no wisecracks.? Thanks, Thom.? Troy Aikman was his laid-back self, but I'm not sure he didn't revel internally while watching this massacre.
