Second baseman Brian Roberts is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox as he rests a bum left ankle. Roberts fouled a ball off his ankle on Friday and came out of the game in the ninth inningfor defensive purposes.The MRI didn't show any damage, but he isn't in the lineup today against the White Sox. Brendan Ryan will start at second base for the Yankees this afternoon.
The Yankees have officially announced the signing of 2B Brian Roberts to a one-year deal.Roberts, 36, owns a .278 (1,452-for-5,214) career batting average with 810 runs, 351 doubles, 92 home runs, 521 RBI, 278 stolen bases and a .349 on-base percentage in 1,327 games over 13 Major League seasons with the Baltimore Orioles from 2001-13. He is tied with Coco Crisp for fourth among all players since 2001 in stolen bases, trailing only Ichiro Suzuki (472), Carl Crawford (432), and Chone Figgins (337).The switch-hitting Roberts batted .249 (66-for-265) with 33 runs, 12 doubles, eight home runs and 39RBI in 77 games for Baltimore in 2013, making his Orioles-franchise-high ninth career Opening Day start at second base. He missed 79 games on the disabled list from April 5 to June 29 with a right hamstring strain, but played in 74 of the Orioles' final 80 team games of the season.The Yankees 40-man roster is now full.
