Many wondered all offseason if the Yankees were going to pony up to sign either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, and CC Sabathia admitted there was a degree of surprise that the Yanks didn't add one of the stars. But ultimately, Sabathia believes the Yanks will be just fine without them.

"A little bit (surprised,) but we didn't need either one of them," Sabathia said on WFAN's CMB program Friday. "We've got a really good right fielder, we've got a really, really good third baseman. So I think we're fine. I think if we needed those guys it'd be a different story, but I think our team is set the way it is. It's good."

Bryce Harper's late spring with the Phillies continued on Wednesday against the Yankees, and after an 0-for-2 performance, he clarified that the team never reached out to him during his free agency tour.

Before Harper even hit free agency, it was expected the Yankees would be at the top of the heap to land the prolific star. However, they made a trade with the Marlins last offseason to land NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton, which all but shut the door on that notion.

Growing up a Yankees fan or not, Harper admitted GM Brian Cashman never called him.

Within an hour of the news the Bryce Harper saga was finally over, a gambling website, BetOnline.ag, sent out an email offering updated odds on the state of the NL East, essentially declaring the Phillies as heavy favorites to win the division.

With Harper on board, signing a 13-year, $330 million contract, the site's odds on the Phillies winning the NL East went from 2-1, a number that already made them co-favorites with the Nationals, to 5-4, or practically an even bet.

That feels like way too much of an overreaction, especially in a division with four legitimate contenders, including the Mets.

I'm home from Port St. Lucie. This past week was my 11th time covering and attending workout week during Spring Training. I want to say camp was laid back and more quiet than usual, but I can't say with confidence that this statement is true.

Instead, it could just be a byproduct of how Tim Tebow and Brodie Van Wagenen (as well as Mike FrancesaAlex Rodriguez and a snake) pulled the attention of fans and media.

We might finally get one of the top free agents off the board by the end of tonight, as talks surrounding Bryce Harper are "intensified," per Fancred Sports' Jon Heyman

The Mets' NL East rival Phillies are the favorite here, and former Marlins president David P. Samson is hearing that their offer to the 26-year-old is worth $310 million over 10 years. The Phillies said they were going to spend "stupid money" this offseason, and that deal would certainly do it to go along with their other signees like Jean Segura, David Robertson, and Andrew McCutchen.

If that is the case, Harper and his agent Scott Boras would get their desired $300 million, long-term deal. It doesn't top Giancarlo Stanton's $325 million deal he signed with the Marlins back in 2015.

Two of baseball's biggest stars remain free agents with spring training just about to open, but MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is hoping they'll be signed before then.

Speaking at the owners' meetings in Orlando, Manfred said, "Obviously, we want our star players signed and ready to go when we start playing," according to USA Today.

Just two days after Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he thought the club's 2019 roster was set, owner Hal Steinbrenner left the door ajar for a major acquisition.

As remote as the possibility may be, Steinbrenner on Thursday did not rule out the Yankees adding another marquee player -- such as Bryce Harper or Manny Machado -- before the season begins.

The Marlins can't be serious with this, can they?

That was the vibe coming out of the Mets' suite at the Delano hotel in Las Vegas in December, when they were trying their best to pry star catcher J.T. Realmuto away from a division rival.

When Miami, according to major league sources, indicated an asking price of one or two of Michael Conforto, Brandon Nimmo and Amed Rosario plus multiple prospects, the Mets front office was sure that price would come down before long.

Aaron Judge wants free agent Bryce Harper to "make the right choice" in selecting a team. But he's willing to make that choice easier by voluntarily opting to change positions for the outfielder.

With one week to go until pitchers and catchers report for spring training, Harper is still shopping the market for the right team. The Yankees are not totally out of the running for the MVP, but they're not showing signs of landing him either.

So Judge, the implied spokesperson of the Yankees, took matters in his own hands during an interview with TMZ...

To date, there have been no published reports indicating the Mets have interest in or will eventually sign Bryce Harper. However, if things break the right way, I see a way Brodie Van Wagenen can step in and steal him.

Again, based on talks with industry sources, as well as multiple rival executives, here's what I believe to be true as I type this right now...

Yankees not out on a Harper deal 00:01:03
SNY Yankees insider Sweeny Murti discusses why Bryce Harper would be a perfect addition to the Yankees young core despite a hefty price tag.

John Harper, for SNY.tv | Twitter |

Just because Scott Boras is making the case that Bryce Harper could solve the Yankees' first-base problem doesn't mean Brian Cashman should come running with an open checkbook.

But at the very least it's an intriguing thought, one the team in the Bronx can't afford to dismiss.

After all, can anyone say with certainty that Greg Bird will overcome his recent injury history and slumping ways at the plate to become the star slugger the Yankees once envisioned?
