The Devils helped themselves on Thursday night.

Unfortunately for them and their fans, that's the only help they got.

New Jersey remains six back of eighth place now with only five games remaining. The Devils' 3-0 win in Philadelphia kept them alive in the playoff hunt with five games left but did them no other good.

Down six points with just six games left, it's time for the Devils to start helping themselves.

We can go over the scenarios every day, but without New Jersey wins it doesn't matter. The Devils are 0-6-4 in their last 10 yet are still mathematically alive.

Yesterday, we talked about the Devils had to stop worrying about what other teams were doing and just win a game. Well, that didn't happen. They didn't even get an overtime point and now likely have to go 6-1 the rest of the way to make the playoffs, which includes a two-game sweep of the Rangers in the final week.

So tonight, the Devils have no choice but to sit back and root for the other teams. The Senators are off tonight, but they're completely out of reach. The Islanders are not "untouchable" but they're a pretty difficult team to catch.

It's getting late fast for the Devils.

New Jersey's 5-4 loss to Boston Wednesday leaves it in dire straits. The Devils trail the three-way tie for sixth by four points with only eight games left.

The only solace New Jersey can take is it will have destiny in its own hands. The Devils will meet Ottawa Friday in a crucial affair at Prudential Center. Three of New Jersey's final eight will be against the Rangers and Sens.

The Devils are down to nine games to make a postseason run.

New Jersey trails the eighth-placed Rangers by just two points with 17 days left. The Devils are four points behind the two-way tie for sixth between Ottawa and the Islanders.

The Isles and Senators seem to be going in opposite directions. Ottawa's lost five straight-- including a 3-2 loss in Tampa Bay on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Islanders are 7-2-1 in their last 10 and knocked off Philadelphia 4-1 on Tuesday in Uniondale, N.Y.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, who seemingly doomed the Devils' playoff hopes just three days ago, have renewed life into New Jersey's postseason chances.

The Leafs' 4-3 regulation win over the Rangers at Air Canada Centre kept New Jersey within two points of both seventh and eighth in the East with only 18 regular-season days remaining.

With New Jersey idle again tonight, the team and fans can root for the Flyers and Lightning. Philadelphia, still clinging to faint-playoff life, will be on Long Island for a date with the Isles. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, will try to deal the reeling Senators their fifth-straight loss.

There are a few new names in the standings today.

The Devils also find themselves in an unfamiliar position: outside the East's top eight.

Five straight losses, two of which came in regulation, coupled with the Islanders' sudden hot streak, have left New Jersey on the outside looking into the playoff party.

Look at those standings.

With the Devils' 5-4 shootout loss to Tampa Bay, there are now seven teams within four points of eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

It makes for a thrilling final three-and-a-half weeks left of this season.

Stefan Matteau played just 5:11 of ice time in Saturday night's 2-1 loss to Montreal.

Less than 24 hours later, according to Mikael Lalancette of Quebec's TVA Sports, Matteau was shipped back to juniors on Sunday.

Matteau netted just one goal and had two assists in 17 games with New Jersey. The 19-year old was a healthy scratch for three straight games before Saturday and had not recorded a point since New Jersey's loss in Buffalo on March 2.

Bounce after bounce after bounce didn't go the Devils' way for two-plus periods Thursday night ... until they did. A rebound ended up right back on Adam Henrique's stick, same with Patrik Elias and then Elias had what might have been the biggest goal of the season (albeit a shootout score). Finally, the streak is over, hopefully for the Devils the pressure is off and? they can get back to playing a complete hockey game. Hopefully. Some thoughts...

Best player on the ice: The Devils aren't anywhere close to being in position to win that game if not for Johan Hedberg. Moose has taken a lot of heat during this losing streak -- and deservedly so. But tonight he was everything the Devils needed him to be. Hedberg was calm in the face of pressure, excellent with his positioning and made a couple saves he probably had no right making. He also got a few breaks (and caught a few posts, particularly in OT), but you tend to get those breaks when you're playing well. One of the more impressive aspects of his game tonight was his puck movement. After a couple early snafus, including one that led to him committing a penalty in the first period, Hedberg settled down with the puck on his stick and directly set up at least two legitimate scoring chances for the Devils. It's a small thing that Martin Brodeur usually excels at and it helps the Devils' defensemen move the puck up the ice without asking guys like Bryce Salvador to carry it end to end. Pete DeBoer had no doubt that Hedberg would eventually settle down and reward his patience in the veteran and tonight, DeBoer's faith paid off. The question now is whether this is a blip in the radar against a team that's OK at best or whether it's a sign of things to come. The Devils need it to be the latter because it doesn't appear that Brodeur is coming back from his back injury anytime soon. Hedberg doesn't have to win games like he did tonight, but he has to play well enough and not give up bad goals so the Devils are at least in games and have a chance to win.
