Carl Hagelin was on Mike Francesa at 4:25PM on Tuesday on WFAN:

  • On knowing the opponent, "we are ready to go and it's always nice to get away from the rink to get some rest but we had a good skate today, another tomorrow and then game time on Thursday."
  • On this year vs last year, "we have a really good chance. Our focus is on Washington but we have a good mix of older and younger guys and some experienced guys who have won it before with Boyler and Marty and guys who are extremely hungry to win it. We have a good mix of veterans and young players and the good thing with our team is that we have a lot of character and do whatever it takes to win games."
  • Did you learn from last years run, "we have some new players but all the guys who played last year know how much fun it is to go deep into the playoffs and how much hard work it takes to be successful. It's one of those things where you have to play your best to win the game and so far we have had some pretty solid games."
  • On how the young guys have worked so well, "it starts with good leadership, guys are humble, Mac is a young captain and that is good for the younger guys who can follow him. The younger guys are getting opportunity and that is what they need. Their is a cap that you can't go over and we have seen young players step up and that is what you need."
  • On the first round, "They played hard, they are a good team. Didn't give up a ton of chances. We did a good job of limiting chances. Washington is a high scoring team and we need to stay out of the box."
  • On Washington, "They are a team with big forwards and big D. They like to play physical and have some superstars in Backstrom and OV but for us it's about using speed and making it hard for them to keep up. They played extremely well after Christmas so we know they are going to bring their "A" game."
  • Did Pitt stop the team speed, "yes and no. Their D did a good job of breaking the puck out quick. The games where we were quick we would go D to D and then up and that is when we play our best, when our wingers are moving their feet and some games that is what we did and others we didn't but to be successful that is what we need to do."
  • Did losing the Cup leave a taste in your mouth, "it left a bitter taste in our mouth and when you are so close and lost 3 games in OT and it doesn't take much. It's not a lot that will be different for the two teams. Need to play your best and going far last year only makes you want it more. The Cup is everyone's dream and goal and getting close last year has given us some momentum for last year."
  • Does the team have more energy than last year, "AV has done a great job of giving us off days or just putting us out for 20 minute skates. Definitely a lot more off days than last year. We won the first series in five and that will give us energy going forward. We have good energy and are ready to get things going on Thursday."
  • On the road, "we have been really good on the road the last two years. We play a pretty boring defensive style and game and have guys willing to buy in and that is why we are successful."
  • On his skating, "I wasn't fast, it's a mix of genes and hard work. As a kid I was quick but not very fast and as I grew and built up some muscle and that helped my stride and I always worked really hard in the summer to get quicker and get more explosive and usually after practice as a kid I would do skates and go blue line to blue line and back and all those small things helped me as I grew."
  • Do you have to do more work to stay that quick, "it's different from player to player. I like being active and like feeling that I am moving around a lot and gives me confidence and a good feel for what I can do in the game."
  • Did you care about playing the Islanders, "Not really, we just wanted that to go to seven games, we wanted the last game to be in OT which it wasn't. Doesn't matter who you are playing, you will be playing a good team. We are focused on Thursday.
