Down 3-2 in the series, the Yankees take on the Houston Astros in Game 6 of the ALCS from Minute Maid Park, with first pitch set for 8:08 p.m.

Yankees notes

Aaron Boone has elected to put Edwin Encarnacion back into the lineup at DH, replacing Giancarlo Stanton. ... Encarnacion has looked lost at the plate during the ALCS, hitting just .067 (1-for-15) with eight strikeouts and three walks. ... After his dramatic three-run home run in Game 5, Aaron Hicks was moved up one more spot in the lineup, now batting cleanup behind Gleyber Torres. ... DJ LeMahieu continues to be the engine that drives the Yankees offense. He's hitting .381 in the series, and his leadoff home run in Game 5 helped put the momentum back in the Yankees' favor.

The right call to remove Tanaka

HOUSTON -- Masahiro Tanaka threw 68 pitches through six innings, allowing just one hit and dominating the Houston offense. Because of that, the knee-jerk response when Adam Ottavino trotted out of the bullpen to begin the seventh might have been outrage.

But one simple fact made it the right call: Opponents have a .387 wOBA (weighted on-base average) against Tanaka the third time through the lineup this year, which was where the Astros found themselves after six.

Aaron Boone has always had an elite human touch, but he famously struggled with pitching moves in his playoff managing debut last year against Boston. It's worth noting then, that he remained calm and followed the game plans in this series.

He took a few risks, and made a few moves that could have left his bullpen short, but it's impossible to accuse him of anything close to managing tight or choking. Quite the contrary, he assigned his pitchers to the lanes determined by pregame planning, and didn't make a single move because of passion or panic.

After they took their four-game series against the rival Boston Red Sox last Friday through Monday, the Yankees (95-50, 9.0 GA in AL East) hit the middle of their 10-game road trip with Tuesday's 6:40 p.m. start vs. the Detroit Tigers (42-100, 45.5 GB in AL Central, 41.0 GB for second Wild Card) at Comerica Park.

Yankees notes

Since they dropped three straight games in an Aug. 20-22 sweep against the Athletics in Oakland, the Yankees have won their past five series. The Yankees dropped last Friday's series opener to Red Sox but then proceeded to bury their rivals as they won the past three games by a 20-6 margin and eliminated Boston mathematically from AL East contention. They did their damage in Monday's series finale, a 5-0 shutout, behind a pair of solo home runs to get on the board -- Austin Romine's fifth-inning shot down the right-field line and Gio Urshela's seven-inning bomb over the left-field Green Monster -- before DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres tacked on a run apiece in the seventh and Luke Voit added another in the ninth.

Mets RH reliever Carlos Torres has cleared waivers and elected free agency, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN (Feb. 1), who notes Torres joining a team in Asia is a possibility.

Torres had recently been placed on waivers after being designated for assignment in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Antonio Bastardo.

The Mets had been in trade talks with multiple clubs about the 33-year-old Torres. However, after significant progress had not been made toward a deal, the Mets placed him on waivers.

In 241 innings for the Mets since 2013, Torres posted a 3.59 ERA while inducing a ground ball 46 percent of the time.

The New York Mets invited infielder Danny Muno to major league camp and designated reliever Carlos Torres for assignment, the team announced.

Muno, 26, hit .148 in 17 major-league games with the Mets last season. With Triple-A Las Vegas, he hit .277 with three home runs and 24 RBIs in 83 games.

Torres, 33, had a 4.68 ERA in 59 appearances out of the bullpen last year. In 57 2/3 innings, he struck out 48 batters and gave up 32 runs (30 earned) and 61 hits, recording a 5-6 record.

By designating Torres for assignment, the Mets opened room on their roster for reliever Antonio Bastardo, who officially signed with the Mets on Friday after he agreed to a deal earlier this week.

Lucas Duda, Jeurys Familia, Josh Edgin, Matt Harvey, Jenrry Mejia, Addison Reed, Ruben Tejada, Carlos Torres, and Neil Walker all filed for salary arbitration on Tuesday (Jan. 12).

The Mets had tendered contracts to all of the above players (except for Walker, who was later acquired from the Pirates in exchange for Jon Niese) on Dec. 2.

If the Mets are unable to agree to contracts with any or all of the above players, their salary will be determined by an arbitrator in February.

In the case of Mejia, while he's projected to earn roughly $2.5 million this coming season, his salary will be prorated due to the suspension that will keep him out until late-July.
