WASHINGTON -- Kael Mouillierat saw 9:07 of ice time in his first NHL on Saturday against the Washington Capitals. When the Islanders host the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday there is a chance Mouillierat gets more ice time.

"I really like the way that he played down low," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said. "He's not afraid to use his body, came up with a big block in the third period. We knew he was good defensively, but I just liked the way he held on to the puck... He did a lot of good things offensively, so for me tomorrow night I'll give him so more minutes."

The 27-year-old was obviously excited about his first NHL game and was understandably somewhat nervous.

Chad Johnson has taken a lot of heat for his performance this season, and for the most part it has all been pretty fair.

The Islanders' backup has not played the way many people expected him to when the team signed him in the offseason, but on Saturday night Johnson played a good game against the Boston Bruins. The Islanders may have lost 2-1, but Johnson's 34 save effort was one of the best he's had in awhile.

Johnson finished the game allowing only two goals and had a .944 save percentage, which was his second best single game save percentage of the year. In addition, when Johnson has given up two goals or less this season the Islanders won when he is in net.

Chad Johnson will be in net tonight when the Islanders take on the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

In his last outing, Johnson allowed four goals on 19 shots in the Isles' 4-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. The Islander backup goalie has struggled since starting off the year with three wins in his first three starts. Johnson is 6-6-0, with a 3.43 goals against average and .886 save percentage.

Head coach Jack Capuano has seemed hesitant to start Johnson, even in games that would be logical for the team's backup to start in. Jaroslav Halak has started in 38 of the Isles 51 games this season.

Chad Johnson will be the first one to tell you that he needs to get his goals against numbers down.

The Islanders backup goaltender ?has surrendered a combined 13 goals -- four goals against the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins, and five against the Tampa Bay Lightning -- in his last three starts. He went 1-2-0 in that span.

"They definitely haven?t gone sort of the way I?ve wanted," Johnson told Islanders Point Blank about his recent starts. "I?ve let in a lot of goals in three games. It?s tough right now for myself. It?s not good enough letting in four or five goals a game and it?s just frustrating. I?ve worked hard in practice and in this business it?s about results. I clearly kind of haven?t gotten the results, so I?m just looking to be better. That?s all I can really do is improve and stay focused. And make some more saves."

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- It has been well documented that this is the Islanders final season at the Nassau Coliseum and something that has been discussed ad nauseam for the length of training camp. However Saturday night it started to sink in and the Islanders began their final year in Uniondale the right way; with a win.

The Islanders defeated the Hurricanes 4-3 in the second of a home and home with Carolina, and the final home opener in Nassau Coliseum history. The win was helping meaning in two distinct ways. One being the Islanders getting a win on a night when was so important to the fans and the other being that they began to establish a winning culture at home.

Home victories were hard to come by last season for the Isles, so to get one early is a step in the right direction.

Uniondale, N.Y. -- Chad Johnson was at the Nassau Coliseum when he heard his former Boston teammate would be joining him on Long Island. Corey Conacher played the role of news breaker by alerting Johnson of the deal:

"I was outside there and Conacher was like 'hey did you hear the news?' I didn't know what he was talking about," Johnson explained. "He said, 'yeah we picked up Boychuk in a trade there.' It was definitely exciting, so I sent him a text right away. Just letting him know if he needed anything I'd be more than willing to help out. He called me five minutes later."

Unlike Nick Leddy, who was acquired on Saturday via a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boychuk is only familiar with Johnson in the Islanders room. The two discussed the situation on Long Island during that phone call after the trade. "[Johnson] said it's a great area for family and he says that I think I'm really gonna like it here," Boychuk told reporters.

Bridgeport, Conn -- It was a tough friday night for the Islanders in their final preseason game of the season.

The Boston Bruins pummeled the Isles 6-1 in front of a sellout crowd of 8,600, -- a large number of which were Bruins fans -- at Webster Bank Arena. Kyle Okposo scored the lone goal for the Islanders on the power play after Brock Nelson left the game after being hit from behind by Kevan Miller in the second period.

The Islanders fielded a roster primarily made up of AHL players and a handful of NHL regulars, which played into how the game turned out, but it was still as ugly a preseason loss as they come. Inside the locker room after the game there was a very somber atmosphere. You could tell no one was taking the loss lightly.

Uniondale, N.Y. -- Goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson knew what they were getting into when they signed on to play on Long Island.

Islander goaltending has had its' struggles in the past and it is a position that needs to be strong since the team's defense is relatively young. Halak knows that Johnson and himself will need to be good this year.

"I would say you need two good goalies," he said. "They need to push each other in practices and in games. That will only make them better. When the guys see that then it's going to just rub off on them and then we'll get better as a group."

Following their 6-1 win over Latvia, Chad Johnson, who played the third period, filed his report to New York Rangers.com about the game.

...This was a nice part:

I thought the third went well, and the guys battled hard in front of me, killing of some penalties. It was nice having a 6-0 lead to work with. Had a tough one go in around the 10-minute mark to wreck the shutout for Mason and the guys, which sucks. I felt a little rusty at the start but got into the flow of things later on.
...Its cool that Johnson played. It seemed like he was there only to backup and be insurance, but its nice he got his chance to play. Hopefully he will get another chance to play, more good experience.

Valley struggled and was sent down to Hartford. Chad Johnson and Matt Zaba alternated as backup for Lundqvist while also doubling as the starter for the Hartford Wolfpack. Both young and not ready, the Rangers brought in Alex Auld off of waivers to backup Lundqvist.

Chad Johnson stopped 21 of 24 shots last night in his surprise start against Phoenix due to Henrik Lundqvist's bout with the flu. Johnson let it three goals on the Coyotes first seven shots, before settling down to stop the next seventeen.

"I found out in the morning that I'd be playing, so I had time to prepare," the 23-year-old Johnson told Larry Brooks of the NY Post. "Then I gave up three in the first to put us in a hole-really, even 2-0 is a hole, but after that I just tried to play as big as I possibly could."
John Tortorella was also impressed with how Johnson handled himself after the tough first:

"I thought it was positive the way he came back so well after struggling in the first," coach John Tortorella said. "He stayed within himself, didn't get into a panic mode and battled through it.
...That first goal was a little tough to see, as Johnson seemed to be a little on edge that Shane Doan split two Ranger defensemen. The second one, he was left alone on a three on one and Mikkel Boedker made a nice nifty move to beat Johnson. The third goal, a long point shot through tons of traffic that Johnson didn't really have a chance on. He rebounded and kept the game relatively close as the Rangers tried to mount a comeback. He has a nice future ahead of him, it would just be much better if he could play the whole year in Hartford and not get shuffled around as much as he has.

Despite the loss against the Thrashers, Chad Johnson ala Henrik Lundqvist looked cool and confident in net. A graduate of University of Alaska-Fairbanks just last year, Johnson barely has any professional experience under his belt, yet you wouldn't have known it by his performance against Atlanta.

In Michael Obernauer's article at the NY Daily News, John Tortorella spoke about how he assessed Johnson's first start:

"You've got to be really careful as you judge people," Tortorella said afterward, although he added: "I am very pleased the way he played here tonight. I thought he handled himself well. He was calm. He's just a calming influence. Side-to-side he was very good. There's not a lot of extra herky-jerky motion, I guess - that's my technical way of saying it."
...Based off one start, it looks as if Johnson has a 'controlled' technique in net. It's one thing to be able to make the saves physically, it's another to have the mental make-up to stay strong after giving up a goal early in the third period - and still make splendid saves as the period progressed, in OT, and in the shootout. I was pleasantly surprised and I hope he's able to lessen the load on Henrik Lundqvist.

When the Rangers acquired Chad Johnson from the Penguins back in June for a fifth rounder, a start that even resembled the one against the Thrashers - 31 saves in all - was surely what they had hoped for in Johnson's future. Though, on Thursday night, the Rangers were wishing that Johnson would step up and prove to be capable back-up to Henrik Lundqvist. Johnson's first NHL start was more than that, as the rookie single handedly earned the Rangers a point, in the 2-1 shootout loss.

As Andrew Gross wrote, Johnson's debut was bittersweet:

?I?m disappointed right now but when I let everything settle in and realize that was the first start, I think I played pretty strong,? said the 23-year-old Johnson, who played the previous four seasons for Alaska-Fairbanks.
...Some of the saves Johnson made last night were just Hank-like. I know it's only one start but the Rangers have to be confident that they have a guy who can spell Lundqvist every once in a while. Hank will need the rest and Johnson looks to be up to the task. It's understandable why the rookie is disappointed, but he shouldn't be; it was a wonderful debut.
