During the first day of OTAs Wednesday, it was Mark Herzlich who lined up as the Giants middle linebacker.

It comes as a bit of a surprise as the team signed veteran free agent Dan Connor to compete -- and many believe -- take the job after Michael Boley was released and the team opted not to re-sign Chase Blackburn.

In related linebacking news, Herzlich was flanked by Spencer Paysinger and Keith Rivers, not Jacquian Williams.

Free agents Aaron Curry and Josh Cribbs both left their visits with the New York Giants without contracts, according to reports.

Curry, the former fourth overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft who has been since cut by both the Seahawks and Raiders, took a physical with the team. Questions remain about Curry's knees, as he has worked out for the Bengals and Bears without signing onto a team.

The Giants may be looking to add a veteran to the linebacking corps heading into training camp. The team did not address that position during the draft after parting ways with Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn this off-season.

Entering this past weekend's NFL Draft, linebacker was an area many speculated the Giants would need to address with young talent.

Yet the team chose not to draft a linebacker.

The Giants bolstered its offensive and defensive lines, added depth to the running back corps and secondary, and even added a pair of linebackers in the form of undrafted free agents Etienne Sabino out of Ohio State and Charles Dieusel of Mount Union.

The NFL Draft is a mere three days away, so of course, all the rumors swirling around who is going to land where are beginning to heat up.

Numerous mock drafts have the Giants looking to bolster a couple different directions, including linebacker, offensive and defensive lines and the secondary. Among the players most commonly connected to Big Blue are linebackers Manti Te'o and Alec Ogletree, offensive tackle D.J. Fluker and cornerback Desmond Trufant.

Over the weekend, the New York Daily News diagnosed those same four positions as areas of need for the Giants in this year's draft, pointing out the linebacking unit lost Michael Boley and Chase Blackburn, and Mathias Kiwanuka has returned to the defensive line. It adds the offensive line -- aside from left tackle Will Beatty -- is aging; Justin Tuck and Kiwanuka are aging; and questions continue to surround cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Jayron Hosley.

From Rotoworld: The Giants seem to be moving on from the lead-footed soon-to-be 30-year-old Blackburn, as they are only willing to bring him back on a one-year deal at the minimum. Blackburn could compete for the strong-side job in Dallas, but he'd likely just be a backup. He started 15 games in the middle for the Giants in 2012.

The Giants are in the business of finding of linebackers. A Florida Times-Union report now suggests they may be chasing the best on the market.

Jacksonville linebacker Daryl Smith, who missed the majority of the 2012 season with a groin injury, has been the stalwart of the team's interior defense for nine seasons.

In my free-agent forecaster, I predicted Smith would remain with the Jags largely because they cannot afford to let the veteran go. Despite the injury he suffered last season, there will certainly be a market for Pro Football Focus' top-rated backer.

The Giants are in dire need of defensive makeover, a process that usually begins from the middle - out. They have already sent DT Chris Canty packing and brought back Shaun Rogers. Veteran LB and defensive signal-caller Michael Boley has also been released.

The consensus has been that another part of the makeover would be the revamping of the LB corp. Either Jacquian Williams or Spencer Paysinger would slide into Boley's WLB slot and Mark Herzlich would assume the MLB duties from Chase Blackburn, an outgoing free agent.

That may or may not still be the plan. Blackburn's agent has said that the team and his client are seeking common ground on a new contract.

Whether it's via free agency, the draft or trades, the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush, which will allow their linebackers to focus more on stopping the revent and their defensive backs on generating turnovers.

With Chase Blackburn expected to miss Sunday's showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers with a hamstring injury, cancer survivor Mark Herzlich will start at linebacker for the New York Giants.

Herzlich, a former Boston College standout, was struck with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, prior to his 2009 season. He had been coming off of a 2008 campaign in which he was voted a third-team AP All-American and the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year.

Herzlich returned to the Eagles' linebacking corps in 2010 and started all 13 games. He finished third on the team with 65 tackles, first with two forced fumbles, and second on the team with four interceptions. He won the Rudy Award and the ACC's Brian Piccolo Award for his effort.

Chase Blackburn (93) forcing the game-clinching fumble Sunday vs Washington

We wanted to post this up yesterday when we heard it, so we're behind the news curve with this. It is based on the below exchange between Tom Coughlin and the media pool regarding the future of the MLB spot.....

Thoughts on Chase Blackburn forcing two key turnovers:Coughlin: Plays hard, smart. Constant motion. You watch the guy play, he?s always talking, moving, always making sure that he communicates with his teammates. Always trying to put people in the right spots, always coming up, it seems, in those situations where he can be a factor in a play even if it?s as you say, not the original. He comes to try and make something happen to the ball which their team was very good at, too.

From April 26 to April 28, 253 young men saw their dreams of being drafted by an NFL team come true.? For hundreds of others, the NFL draft cruelly concluded with their names uncalled.? Most of us reading this have never known what it feels like to be a prospective NFL player going undrafted, but I imagine it might feel like your high school crush refusing your advances in front of all your friends and family.? That is, if your high school crush happened to be all 32 NFL teams.

But as much as it stings, going undrafted is not the end of the road for these young athletes with dreams of playing under the brightest of lights, on the greenest of fields, wearing the costliest of cleats.? Undrafted players who still long to make a living as a professional football player must look no further than the Super Bowl 46 champions for a sign of hope.? Several members of the Giants? 2011 roster were overlooked at the draft by every NFL team seven times over.

Not all undrafted free agents are created equal, and there are a number of players whose stories could have been ripped right out of a Hollywood script.? Mark Herzlich was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and was a consensus first round prospect after his junior season at Boston College.? But when he was diagnosed with Ewing?s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, the only thing that mattered was getting healthy.? Herzlich and his doctors successfully tackled the disease, and he was miraculously able to return to the field roughly one year later.? Herzlich fell all the way out of the draft, but was quickly signed by general manager Jerry Reese the morning undrafted free agency began.? He has yet to establish himself on the field, but his story has inspired millions, and his leadership and toughness make him a coach?s dream.

The Giants have re-signed LB Chase Blackburn to a one year deal, according to Mike Garafolo.

Many believed that the trade for Keith Rivers signaled the end of Blackburn's Giants career, but fans are happy to have the hard-nosed, Super Bowl hero back in the fold. The 28-year old, previously re-signed with the Giants towards the end of the 2011 season, after making plans to retire and become a substitute math teacher. ?He made several key plays upon his return, and the defense played?noticeably?better with him in the lineup.

Linebacker still may not be a strength for this team, but the coaching staff will certainly have plenty of options with their?new-found?depth. Aside from Blackburn and Rivers, the Giants expect ample contributions from Michael Boley, Mathias Kiwanuka and Jacquain Williams. Greg Jones and Mark Herzlich may have to fight for roster spots, and it is possible that Jerry Reese will draft a linebacker in two weeks. Jonathan Goff will almost definitely sign elsewhere.

Blackburn made the team an undrafted free agent in 2005 out of the University of Akron. He went on to become a spot linebacker during his five seasons with the Giants. Blackburn was also a special teams captain last season.I wrote before the season after Jon Goff went down that Blackburn should be brought back. It is certainly not surprising that many top NFL analysts expect the Giants to select an offensive lineman with their 19th overall pick next month. The majority of the line has exhibited a lower level of performance over the past two seasons and both C Shaun O?Hara and Rich Seubert sustained serious injuries last season.

Compounding the issue, William Beatty took a step backwards in 2010 despite being projected by many as the starting LT on opening day. The offensive line needs youth and talent ASAP, therefore selecting a Tyron Smith (USC) or a Mike Pouncey (UF) would be logical.

The good news coming out of Timex today is Chase Blackburn's status. Despite being carried off the field yesterday, the captain was walking to team meetings today without a limp or hard cast. He may even be able to return as soon as Sunday but did acknowledge he aggravated his MCL injury from this past summer.

Beatty on the other hand will require surgery on his broken foot. Coughlin is unsure that this injury is a ticket to IR but it looks that way. Should Beatty be done for '10, the Giants reserve linemen will consist of Shawn Andrews, Mitch Petrus, and Adam Koets.

Although the organization does need to make room for Bear Pascoe, I don't see the team proceeding without another capable reserve tackle. Shawn Andrews has been used mainly as a guard and Adam Koets is listed as a tackle but in reality is only a backup center.

Chase Blackburn will avoid surgery but has a sprained MCL? that will cause him to miss an undetermined amount of time according to Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News:

Blackburn was more or less a lock to make the team if he stayed healthy. ?For the past five years he has been a quality reserve player, occasional starter, and special teams standout. ?The numbers game may hurt him though, as the Giants are likely to have several hard decisions to make when final cuts are due.
Jim Sorgi is also banged up. ?He suffered an injury to his ribs presumably after throwing his second TD pass to Cruz. ?As of now he is expected to be ready for the Steelers Saturday.
Ramses Barden is?apparently??experiencing back pain. ?Barden got the start over Mario Manningham last night but failed to stand out. ?With Victor Cruz on the rise and Derek Hagan continuing to play well, Barden cannot afford to miss time as camp winds down.
Eli Manning isn't cleared just yet. ?While both he and the team publicly claim that he did not suffer a concussion, he is still being evaluated at the Hospital for Special Surgery. ?Coughlin may choose to sit him Saturday night with or without a concussion.

-Victor Cruz.  3 TD's?  Granted they came agaisnt backups or lower, but the young receiver still showed valuable ball handeling skills and at least two of his big catches came in tight coverage.  Cruz is also the first player to haul in 3 TDs in a single pre-season game since T.O. in 1998.  If Moss beats him out... well frankly it just won't happen.

- Chase Blackburn has a sprained knee.  Clearly we won't see him again before the regular season, if we see him at all.  The linebacking corps is crowded. As good as Blackburn has been for New York over the past five years, if he can't contribute for a month or two he might be headed towards the chopping block.

-Speaking of Blackburn,  Gerris Wikinson, showed signs of life.  Not good for a laid up linebacker.

-Jim Sorgi has a cannon and Rhett Bomar has wheels.  The Giants will probably be forced to cut at least one and early on it seemed that Sorgi was a fish out of water without a clipboard in his hand.  His poor play was likely a result of a struggling offensive line.  His play swiftly picked up when Cruz and Hagan took the field.  Sorgi is still the favorite to be the backup QB after showing marked improvement throughout the second half.

-DJ Ware had a decent showing against non 3rd stringers for the first time ever.  Maybe Andre Brown isn't entrenched at number 3.

-Jason Pierre-Paul seems to have come a long way from collapsing at his first pro practice back in May.  1 sack later, I am very interested to see how he factors in to the regular season attack this year.

Chase Blackburn might not be the most recognizable name on?Big Blue's?roster, but at?the NFL Alumni Connecticut Chapter's Fourth Annual Golf Classic yesterday?in Darien, CT, he was?a true Giant.
Blackburn joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2005. This season will be his sixth as a pro. Yesterday, he made an impact off the field by participating in the annual golf event at the Country Club of Darien, which?raises money for youth-related charities.

Festivities included an?18-hole team scramble in which each foursome was captained by a former or current player, a live auction, and an awards dinner.

Stamford Advocate/Greenwich Time reporter Jesse Quinlan wrote about the event,?and spent time talking to Blackburn. Here are some of the comments the Giants' linebacker made:

On being a role model:
"Our time in the league typically doesn't last too long but the impact we can make sure can. Our words carry a lot of weight with kids, I know I would have loved to have met a professional football player when I was growing up in Ohio. I try to get to as many charity events as I can, I just feel like it's the honorable thing to do. This is a beautiful course from what I hear, so that doesn't hurt?either."
On the New Meadowlands Stadium:
"Playing there is gonna be unreal. I can't?wait."
On last year's disappointing season:
"It was the first time in my five years that we didn't make the playoffs. Sure we had our share of injuries, but so does every team in the league. That was unacceptable, so we have plenty of motivation for the upcoming?year."
