Saturday night, the Arizona Fall League held their annual prospect showcase - the Rising Stars game. Two of the game's better prospects,?Cincinnati's?Billy Hamilton and Washington's Brian Goodwin?shone brightest.?It featured only one Met, LHP Chase Huchingson. Huchingson faced two batters: issued a walk and induced a groundout.

He was an odd choice to represent the Mets in the game as he was neither a "name" prospect nor had been effective in the AFL. In fact, in his six AFL appearances, he had walked nine and fanned four in 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs, six earned for a 8.53 ERA. If the AFL, wanted a situational lefty, they could have turned to Adam Kolarek who had an 8/4 K/BB ratio, but had yielded 13 hits in his 8.1 innings of work.

The fact that neither CF Darrell Ceciliani (.234/.315/.340 for a .655 OPS in 13 games) nor Cesar Puello (.232/.317/.268 for a .585 OPS in 14 games) merited inclusion on the squad was fairly damning.

Lets meet the pitchers the Mets sent to the Arizona Fall League this year.

Teams can use the AFL for a number of reasons including as:?finishing school for top prospects, preparation for the transition to a higher level, either AA or AAA, as extra-playing time for a guy who was injured during the season or as an extra audition for a spot on the team?s 40-man roster.

I covered the position players in some depth here?when the rosters were announced, but seem to have skipped the pitchers. ?Anyway, the four pitchers are RHP Ryan Fraser, LHP Chase Huchingson, LHP Adam Kolarek and RHP Greg Peavey. None of the quartet made my Mets' preseason Top 41 Prospects list, and all are longshots to make this year's list.

A+: G1: @ Tampa Yankees 4, St. Lucie Mets 2 (7 innings)@ Tampa Yankees 1, St. Lucie Mets 0 (7 innings)? In game two, Yankees' farmhand Jose Ramirez no-hit in the Mets and was a walk and two HBP away from a perfect game. He's 22 and pitched in the SAL in 2010 and 2011 and I confess that I remember very little about him.

3B Aderlin Rodriguez's St. Lucie debut was very Aderlin: 1-for-3 with a double and an error in game one, and 0-for-3 in game two.

LHP?Chase Huchingson in game one: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 0 K. That's now 42 walks in 79 innings this year 4.8 BB/9 rate and 12% of batters faced.

A+: St. Lucie Mets 3, @ Charlotte Stone Crabs 2 (12 innings)

St. Lucie has played 26 innings of baseball in the last two games. With the win, St. Lucie improved to 48-15, the most wins ever by a St. Lucie team in a half.

And how did the winning run score? 22-year old catcher Francisco Pena (.246/.298/.431 - 37 games) lifted his fourth home run of the year.

A+: Tampa Yankees 2, @ St. Lucie Mets 1??(10 innings)

The Mets offense had four hits, all singles in this one.

LHP Chase Huchingson, a non-drafted free agent two years ago, kept the Yankees at bay, but the box score suggests he again struggled to locate: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP. That's 21 walks in his last 29.1 IP.

AA: @ Portland Sea Dogs 4, Binghamton Mets 0The Binghamton offense only collected two four hits, but 3B Jefry Marte was responsible for half of them. Actually, the 20-year old was perfect, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances thanks to a pair of walks, to push his season line to .323/.388/.444 in 34 games. However, Marte's fielding error to begin the fifth of the year, led to a two-run inning, and an unearned run.

RHP Gonzalez Germen was eh: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K and Armando Rodriguez allowed a pair of runs in his two innings of work behind Germen.

Another o-for, this time an 0-for-3 dropped Reese Havens to .132/.246/.226 in 16 games in AA this year. He's hitless in his last six games. The good news is that a couple of big games will turn his line around dramatically. The bad news is that he's now 25 in AA and off to a slow start in a season that was again delayed by injury.

The St. Lucie Mets were on fire in May. The team finished at 20-4, the best record in minor league baseball, and the best record for a St. Lucie Mets team in any month in their history.

(All further stats include the team's blowout win on May 1.)

As a team, St. Lucie currently leads the FSL in home runs (19) and doubles (57) and slugging (.413). In fact, the Mets are the only team in the FSL slugging over .390. The team is second in the FSL in runs scored (118) while hitting .265/.332/.413 overall.

A+: St. Lucie Mets 1, Palm Beach Cardinals 0?(6.5 innings)

The story here is LHP Chase Huchingson who still has not allowed a run of any kind in his three Florida State League starts. His line Thursday: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K. His three-start performance: 17.2 IP, 10 H, 0 R, 0 HR, 4 BB, 13 K. It's probably worthless at this point, but Huchingson has reverse platoon splits through three starts with lefties hitting .316/.381/.368 (6-for-19) while righties have hit a miserable .098/.159/.122 (4-for-41).

The Mets scored their only run when SS Wilfredo Tovar singled home Richard Lucas who walked in the fifth inning. By going 4-for-6 in the last two games, ?the 20-year old Tovar has lifted his season line from .176/.263/.265 after 10 games to .250/.318/.350 after 12. April stats might be dumb.

We're two weeks into 2012, so keeping in mind that it's still really early, we'll take a look at some of the big picture things going on at each affiliate.

St. Lucie is third in the Florida State League in scoring averaging exactly four runs per game on a batting line of .242/.329/.369 in 12 games. The team FSL Mets are third in in walks and tops in stolen bases (17) and stolen base percentage 89% (17 of 19).

The team's pitching leads the FSL in ERA (1.74) and is tied for the fewest walks allowed 27 and 2.24 BB/9.

A+: @ St. Lucie Mets 4, Bradenton Marauders (PIT) 2?

LHP Chase Huchingson was story #1 in his advanced-A debut: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 WP. Huchingson no-hit the Marauders through 4.2 innings and all three of the hits he allowed were singles.

(I don't know what the hell the box score is counting for pitches, but it had Huchingson throwing 32 strikes and 37 pitches total. ?Oh, MiLB.com, how cute.)

I have lots of spring training video that I've been a little delinquent getting edited. ?This one is fun.

Chase Huchingson just missed my pre-season Top 41 prospects. The non-drafted free-agent had a really nice 2011 with Savannah, working to a 1.82 ERA in 84 IP, including eight starts. He faned 91 batters and walked 25 in 84 IP. The Mets moved him to the bullpen in the latter half of the season to keep his innings down. He had split his time as a pitcher and outfielder at the University of Central Arkansas, so he had very few innings on his arm prior to 2011.

It's a good thing the Gnats (39-30) eliminated the Greenville Drive and clinched a first-half title last Tuesday, because the Drive swept the Gnats to finish the first half this past weekend.
