Buoyed by good at-bats and good pitching, including by Masahiro Tanaka on Wednesday, the Yankees are riding an eight-game winning streak.

Tanaka kept the White Sox in check for most of the evening, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six in seven innings of work. The only real damage came in the fourth when Jose Abreu brought in Tim Anderson with an RBI double.

Chase Headley kept his hot start going with his third home run of the year, a two-run shot in the first inning.

  • James Shields (2-2) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings.

That's three straight subpar outings for Sabathia, which followed up his best stretch of pitching in the last few seasons. Sabathia was bit by the long ball in the this one, as they accounted for four of the five runs he allowed. It is difficult to say that Sabathia was knocked around however, as he did manage nine strikeouts in his six innings of work.

It was obviously nice for the Yankees to get away from San Diego with at least one win, but the series as a whole feels like another lost opportunity. That is especially true after coming into the road trip off back-to-back walk-off victories. The Yankees continue to fail to build substantial win streaks when it seems the schedule is in their favor.

Luis Severino allowed seven runs in 2 2/3 innings before leaving the game with an elbow injury and the New York Yankees managed just one run against Chris Sale in a 7-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Friday.

  • Severino (0-6) threw 81 pitches before leaving the game with soreness in the back of his right elbow. He will undergo an MRI after the game.
  • Severino allowed three runs in the second inning and four in the third inning. Jose Abreu hit a two-run single in the second that made it 3-0. Adam Eaton hit a two-run double, and Jimmy Rollins followed with a two-run home run.
  • Sale (8-0) lowered his ERA to 1.67 and has won every one of his starts this season. In his second complete game of the year, Sale allowed six hits and struck out six batters.
  • The Yankees had won four of their last five games prior to Friday's loss.
  • Chase Headley hit his second home run in as many nights after not recording an extra-base hit in his first 91 at-bats of the season.
  • Gary Sanchez, who was called up on Friday, went 0 for 4.
  • Nick GoodyChasen Shreve and Kirby Yates combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.

Chris Carelli, SNY.TV Facebook | Twitter | About Me | Archives

The loss tonight is not all that surprising considering the Yankees were facing arguably the best pitcher in the American League at the moment. At the same, the Yankees hoped Severino was making headway after his last start and could stick with Sale. Now, the Yankees will shift their concern to the health of their young promising starter.

The Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox completed a three-team trade that was headlined by 3B Todd Frazier going to Chicago, according to Jeff Passen of Yahoo Sports (Dec. 16).

The Dodgers received RHP Frankie Montas, OF Trayce Thompson and 2B Micah Johnson, the Reds received IF Jose Peraza, OF Scott Schebler and minor league IF Brandon Dixon while the White Sox acquired only Frazier.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, rival baseball executives are questioning why the Reds didn't choose the package from Chicago rather than L.A.'s. Many believe the Dodgers walked away with the better group of prospects, despite the Reds parting with the marquee piece of the trade (Dec. 16).
