The stalwart of the Giants defense for recent memory has been the defensive line -- while the pass rush garners the most attention, it's the tackles who allow it to come to fruition.

During the first day of organized team activities Wednesday, the team revealed a new defensive tackle rotation amid off-season signing and draft picks.

With Chris Canty now a member of the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens and Rocky Bernard gone, Linval Joseph is one of only a few veterans who remain on the roster from last season.

Aiming to add depth to their defensive line, defensive tackle Mike Patterson is paying a visit to the New York Giants.

Patterson, the longtime Philadelphia Eagle, was released in late February. The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick visited with the Detroit Lions shortly after, but no deal was reached.

Patterson's visit included a physical, according to reports, as Patterson's seizure during training camp in 2011 nearly ended his career. In January 2012, he underwent surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain.

Chris Canty was a casualty of the Giants budget cuts at the start of the off-season, but now it appears as if the defensive lineman has found a suitor.

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Canty will visit with Green Bay sometime this week.

The Packers, a team that has lost its top defensive linemen like Cullen Jenkins and Aaron Kampman in free agency in recent years, are in need of help to bolster its run defense.

After releasing Chris Canty yesterday, the Giants re-signed another veteran defensive tackle, Shaun Rogers.

Rogers was expected to contribute significantly along the Giants' defensive line last season, but the 13-year veteran was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 31 with a blood clot.

As you probably have heard by now, the Giants have released three veteran players over the past 24 hours. LB Michael Boley yesterday and DT Chris Canty and RB Ahmad Bradshaw this afternoon.

These are just some of the tough decisions the Giants are faced with this offseason. They have to get down under the cap (approx $121 million) by March 12th and have to pay up some of their players approaching their primes i.e. Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks.

Yes, it's a business and when you've been as successful as the Giants have been the past few seasons, there is never going to be enough money to pay everyone. The team just cleared out about $14 million in cap space with the cuts so that will help. But they will miss the integrity and leadership these players have provided the past few seasons.

The New York Giants have released RB Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty, according to multiple reports.

Bradshaw, who recently underwent a procedure to replace the screws in his injured foot, rushed for 1,050 yards in 14 games last season and is now set to become a free agent.

In his absence, rookie first-rounder David Wilson stepped up to the place, emerging as the Giants' most lethal weapon in their final games.

The Giants and Cowboys are set to face off in their second showdown of the season on Sunday.

For the G-Men, it's a chance to get revenge for Jerry Jones' comments following his Cowboys' win in the season opener and extend their lead in the NFC East. A win would situate Big Blue at 6-2 and potentially three games better than the runner-up.

For the Boys, it's an opportunity to sweep the series against New York for the first time since 2007 and make ground on the division-leading Giants. Both Dallas and Philadelphia are sitting at 3-3, with the Eagles facing a tough one vs. Atlanta.

With Rocky Bernard still out with a quadriceps injury, Canty?s return comes at an opportune time. Rookie Marcus Kuhn has played well in Canty?s absence, but maybe the veteran Canty will stabilize a defensive line coming off a good week.

Giants' DT Chris Canty felt he was making progress after undergoing microfracture surgery on his knee after the Super Bowl last season. He believed all summer that he would be ready for the regular season opener Sept 5 vs Dallas.

But, with that game only eight days away and Canty yet to begin practicing, the Giants elected to place Canty on PUP, effectively wiping out the first half of his season.

"We sort of expected that to be the case," Tom Coughlin said of the decision. "We dealt with the thought of how fast he ought to come back, and it?s better for the player and team as well that he has this extra time?"

The Giants' defensive line is already one of the league's best. No team has a stable of quality ends like the Blue, and now their interior line is stepping up their games as well.

Chris Canty, Linval Joseph, Marvin Austin, Rocky Bernard and Markus Kuhn are being joined by the 350 lb 12-year vet, Shaun Rogers - a former Pro Bowler who the team will use to fill gaps (no pun intended).

The 33 year-old Rogers is being counted on to rub off some knowledge on the younger players and to defray the possible loss of Canty (knee), who has still not been cleared to practice by the medical staff.

Like the rest of his teammates, Canty was in a giddy, playful mood after the game. Elsewhere in the locker room, players were shouting reminders to each other to watch ?60 Minutes? for a segment on Mark Herzlich, a rookie linebacker and survivor of Ewing?s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. ?Herrrrrrzzzzzzzz!!!!!!? a handful of Giants bellowed in response to the reminders.

Pundits are sounding off from all avenues of the media about quarterback hits today. Some are taking the side of Michael Vick, who commented that officials do not go out of their way to protect him (He has since backpedalled on those comments, calling them "out of character"). ?But that has not taken the focus off of Giants' DL Chris Canty, the player who leveled the hit that knocked Vick from yesterday's game with what was originally diagnosed as a broken hand.

"I didn?t think anything was wrong with the hit when it took place," Canty said today. "I didn?t think it was anything wrong with the hit after looking at it again today. It is unfortunate that he got injured. We weren?t out there trying to injure anybody. We are all competitors and we are all competing at the highest level. It is unfortunate for him. It is unfortunate for their football team but again, we are all competitors. We are all competing and playing hard."

As it turns out, Vick's hand is not broken, but rather badly bruised and he still may miss some time.

This is simply a depth signing, which became necessary after Rocky Bernard was released. Watson adds a veteran presence to go along with youngsters Linval Joseph and Marvin Austin, as well as incumbent Chris Canty.

Michael Vick can scare you.?? DeSean Jackson can beat you.?? But Jeremy Maclin...No.? If the New York Giants are to win the battle for supremacy of the NFC East the Giants need to slow down Michael Vick and shut down and frustrate DeSean Jackson.

Is this business as usual for the Giants defense?? The answer should be...No.? If they come out of the tunnel with the attitude they did against the Cowboys they will have their butts handed to them.? Maclin is a very smart receiver; however, he can not take over a game and has not displayed the ability to carry a team by himself.

When is the last time the Giants stopped Jackson, the Philadelphia Eagles 2008 second round draft pick.? Don't hurt your brain because the answer is never.? The Giants are still searching for a way to stop DeSean Jackson.

Can you believe it??

Sports Illustrated's? Peter King has predicted the New York Giants to win the NFC East with a 11 & 4 record.?

His reasoning for the prediction...a combination between the "NASCAR" defensive scheme where all four defensive down lineman are pash rushing ends(Tuck, Kiwi, Osi, JPP), Perry Fewell's ability to call a defense similar to the great Steve Spagnuolo and a healthy Chris Canty.

As fellow writer John Fennelly?reported earlier this week Osi Umenyiora may see less snaps this week in favor of Mathias Kiwanuka. Opponents have targetd Osi's side to run on. Often Osi over pursues the run in an attempt to use his speed, get up the field and get to the Quarterback. The problem is he has only arrived at the Quarterback?5 times this year (arrived is my fancy way of saying sack, Osi has 5 arrives at qb).

Here's the thing. Now I'm gonna tell you the thing, the thing is ?every speed rusher in the league has the tendency to over pursue the rush, from Dwight Freeney to Elvis Dumervil to Trent Cole. The over pursuit is normally countered by the sack totals and quarterback strips, but this year Osi has struggled to get there and so the over pursuing is magnified. Remember this, you don't just run on one defensive end, it's the whole side that is being targeted. Kiwi has shown that he can be explosive on the outside as well, but the truth is Kiwi is also a speed guy and I wonder if the same results are in store for Big blue. Kiwi, a younger player, may not feel the freedom to simply rush up the field and may be more disciplined against the run but I think this speaks to Osi's struggles more then Kiwi's strength.

It's not a shock that this move comes on the heels of the Cowboy game. Dallas targeted Osi's side more then any other team. And lastly this issue is, to me, what made Michael Strahan so great. Stray played the run just as well as he did the pass, he was an all around stud. To me this is why Justin?Tuck is our strongest D end, he is stout against the run and pass. All this said, Osi is a very talented pass rusher and this will not be the end of him by any means. Please note, the media loves to use the word "benched," ?but the gmen rotate lineman all the time, Osi will play Sunday and play often.
