Chris Duhon

The New York Knicks have interest in reuniting with guard Chris Duhon, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Duhon now joins fellow guards Bobby Brown and Beno Udrih as reported targets of the Knicks, a team in search for depth at the point guard position.

In 46 games with the Los Angeles Lakers last season, Duhon averaged 2.9 points and assists, albeit in about 18 minutes per game. He did manage to shoot 38 percent from the floor.

Brian Lewis of the NY Post ran into Ben Gordon at a celebrity softball game in which Gordon had this to say about Chris Duhon:

?He?s a steady player. You never have to worry about what you?re going to get from him; you know exactly what you?re going to get out there on the floor. He?s going to do exactly what the coach tells him, get you in your sets, get everybody the ball. He?s not going to do too much and he?s sure not going to do too little. And he?s a good defender. He?ll pressure the ball. He'll help. He?s just a steady player.??

I realize Duhon is a stopgap, but the more you hear about him this is exactly the type of player that has been missing from this team.

Alan Hahn reports from today's press gathering at MSG as the Knicks officially announced the signing of Chris Duhon. Appears he came away with the following:

1) Chris Duhon will have to win a starting job on this team.

2) Don't pack Stephon Marbury's bags just yet.

In reading some of the beat writers blogs all speculation is that the Chris Duhon signing will lead to the departure of Stephan Marbury. Ken Berger quotes his agent, Kevin Bradbury as saying that "There?s no guarantees in life but we've been given all the assurances that they're not bringing him here to sit on the bench."

I am not a Marbury supporter so I think getting rid of Marbury from this locker room is addition by subtraction. I am wondering what the readers of this site think would you keep Stephon Marbury even with the signing of Chris Duhon?

The holiday doesn't stop the news coming out in Knickerbocker land. Marc Berman is reporting that Duhon is still waiting on an official offer from Orlando.

It is clear that the Knicks two year offer is not satisfactory to Duhon's camp, but that might be moot. Its reported that Orlando is monitoring the Corey Maggette situation before they finalize anything with Duhon. This will probably last through the holiday weekend.

Monta Ellis name came up again in Alan Hahn's column this morning. A day after he "threw some cold water" on the proposition of Ellis, word comes out that the Knicks are still monitoring the situation. Right now Miami and Cleveland have been the most aggressive in pursuing Ellis.

If you read Alan Hahn's latest post to The Knicks Fix it appears Chris Duhon might be leaning towards playing for a contender. According to his agent Kevin Bradbury Duhon wants to "help a team win a championship" versus "play for a team a team looking to rebuild". Obviously when you stack the Magic versus the Knicks its easy to see which category New York falls into.

Reports out of the local papers indicated that Chris Duhon will make his decision today. It appears that it will come down to whether he wants the longer term security of the Orlando offer or the shorter Knicks package that is filled with the "Mike D'Antoni system"opportunities. Alan Hahn does note that he believes the Knicks have not offered Duhon the full mid-level exception leaving him to speculate whether they could use the remainder on a veteran defensive foward like Kurt Thomas or Chris Andersen.

The alternatives to Duhon are not all that exciting, although Carlos Arroyo is intriguing. For the record I would love the Knicks to take a flyer on Chris Andersen. He is not that far removed from a season in which he averaged 7 points and 6 rebounds off the New Orleans bench. The Knicks are in a position where "scrap heap" pickups could yield a nice reward. I know he has had substance abuse problems, but hopefully those days are behind him. If you remember Jim Dolan has a soft spot for reclamation projects as he gave Vin Baker a second chance at one point.

Marc Berman of the NY Post reports that sources indicated Chris Duhon was offered a 2 year $7 million dollar deal. The potential signing of Duhon does not necessarily mean a buyout of Stephan Marbury. Berman has spoken to those that believe Marbury has been assured he will be competing for the starting PG job in training camp. The one Knicks guard Duhon's presence could hurt is Nate Robinson.

If the Duhon deal does not come to fruition then other options are Sebastian Telfair, Tyronn Lue, Keyon Dooling, Carlos Arroyo, and possibly Monta Ellis.

I still stand by the fact that this team will not move on and become better with Stephan Marbury in the locker room. At any rate get your Chris Duhon jersey ready because I think this is your 2008 free agent signing.

databasebasketball.com is one of the statistical sites that I rely on to get my information. After reading Tommy's post about the possibility of Duhon I became intrigued and did some statistical research. Now, let me preface this by saying I am not one to just look at stats, but I was interested in Duhon's production. databaseBasketball compares similar types of players with a statistical formula. The player that compares best with Duhon: Steve Blake. If you could get Duhon as a free agent then you can keep David Lee and possibly move him for cap space or to fill another need. I realize that this is all speculation, but I will keep an eye on Duhon because he might be the fiscally responsible type of stopgap point guard this team needs.
