Chris Flexen

Lets look at a cohesive group of young arms in my Top 41, young pitchers with better than average fastballs who have not played full-season ball yet. I tend to be pretty conservative with young pitchers especially those below full-season ball since there are just so many misses.

This trio begins the fun part of the rankings.

R (APP): @ Kingsport Mets 1, Burlington Royals 0?

RHP Chris Flexen (7-1, 2.14) turned was the performance of the night in the short-season realm, if not the system as a whole:?9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K. After a couple of wobbly starts to begin the year, Flexen has been really strong in his last eight contests: 1.64 ERA in 55 innings with 47 strikeouts against nine walks. My preseason #32 prospect, I saw Flexen at his most raw, in his first professional start in 2012. His ranking will certainly rise this year.

On its face, this trio is a hodgepodge. It is. However, when read as part of a greater group that covers #26-33 it makes more sense as a range where the rankings mix unproven guys with upside like Chris Flexen and Corey Oswalt with more accomplished players like Jack Leathersich and Cam Maron with lower ceilings.

#31 - LHP Jack Leathersich

Born:?7/14/90 (Beverly, MA)

I've been a little remiss on the box-score diving with respect to Kingsport the last two days, but I wanted to point out a few things.

- C Tomas Nido?can hit. The 18-year old had two hits both Sunday and Monday?and is up to .310/.383/.452 with five walks against eight strikeouts in 13 games. He has a long way to go as a receiver, but owns an average or better arm.

- Two Arms to WatchTwo guys who will have a really good chance to appear in the back half of my off-season Top 41 prospects list, Corey Oswalt and Chris Flexen made solid starts for the K-Mets this week.
