Former Islanders second-round pick G Mikko Koskinen may be seeing a reunion with his only NHL team as he is reportedly leaving his KHL club SKA, per Sport-Express' Igor Eronko.

Though multiple sources have said Koskinen is expected to sign somewhere in the NHL next season, The Athletic's Arthur Staple says the Islanders haven't spoken on him yet. Eronko believes Koskinen signing with the Isles isn't a likely scenario.

After the team drafted him back in 2009, Koskinen played just four games with the Islanders during the 2010-11 season. But that was all the action he saw with the NHL club before shipping off to Finland to play in the SM-liga, or Finnish pro league.

Christopher Gibson will be the Islanders' starting goaltender for Monday's matchup against the Panthers, head coach Doug Weight said.

Also, James Wagner will be in for Casey Cizikas. Wagner was the return of the Jason Chimera trade with the Ducks back in February.

With just seven games remaining, the Islanders would be mathematically eliminated from playoff contention with a loss on Monday.

No words came out of Doug Weight's mouth when asked what has happened to his team that has now lost eight straight games ater their loss to the Oilers Thursday night.

"No, I don't. I don't," he told Newsday's Neil Best. "Nothing. I can't."

The loss to the Canucks felt awful after an early 2-0 lead turned into a desperation tie at the end of regulation just to lose in overtime. However, this game blew that one out of the water.

With the Islanders' season at a critical juncture, the club will likely turn to young backup goalie Christopher Gibson in one of their upcoming games, perhaps as early as Friday against the Canadiens.

The 25-year-old was recalled last month from Bridgeport when Thomas Greiss was placed on injured reserve, although he has yet to get into a game. Gibson was 18-11-3 with a 2.31 goals against average for the Sound Tigers, and the Islanders are hoping he brings some of that success with him.

"He's a good kid, good goalie, been working really hard and it's been a while, so we've got to get him in there,'' Isles head coach Doug Weight said Thursday. "I think he's got the attitude to play well for us.''

Islanders G Thomas Greiswas placed on the IR Monday, which is retroactive to Feb. 16. His timetable for return is unknown.

The 32-year-old is 11-7-2 on the season with a 3.84 goals-against average and .891 save percentage in 24 games. Christopher Gibson was an emergency call-up from Bridgeport to take his roster spot.
