UConn and Cincinnati both need a win Saturday to avoid an 0-3 start in the American Athletic Conference.

Both also are looking for big improvements at key offensive positions.

The Huskies (2-3, 0-2 American) come into their game with the Bearcats (3-2, 0-2) averaging just 350 yards a game, which ranks 104th among the 128 Bowl Subdivision teams. That includes just 124 yards per game on the ground.

The New York Jets fell one point and a few missed opportunities short of opening the season with a victory.

With a quick turnaround and a trip to AFC East-rival Buffalo up next, they're staring at a potential 0-2 start for the first time since 2007. And, they've got plenty to clean up in a hurry.

"It's tough, and it's not what we wanted," quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said of the Jets' 23-22 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, the $12 million man, frustratingly came up short in the clutch, as his forced throw to Eric Decker was intercepted in the final minute with the New York Jets trying to get into field goal range. After Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a 16-13 halftime advantage with two touchdown passes, the Bengals held them to just six points in the second half.

The Jets didn't really let Fitzpatrick air it out -- or he chose not to -- because he completed three downfield throws over the middle but just one outside the numbers. The passing game enjoyed some success in between the 20s on short passes, but let itself down by coming up empty a few times close to the goal line.

While he took off a couple of times for positive yardage, Fitzpatrick perhaps eschewed a couple of chances to tuck and run in the red zone. Even on the play where he threw his first touchdown pass, he probably could have walked it in after the right defensive end bit hard on the run action despite there not being a play fake. This left Fitzpatrick and his two receivers with an easy three-on-two situation on the backside.

Welcome to BGA. We'll be here the day after every New York Jets game for an in-depth review of what happened. We'll look at each position group throughout the day, so keep coming back to TJB to check it out.

Let's move on to discuss Sunday's game.

After all the anticipation, that was a pretty horrible way to lose a game. The Jets left plenty of points on the field and lost by just one, hurting their chances on missed kicks, third down pass defense and red zone execution. The fact that the Jets came out with their hair on fire looking so good only makes the loss seem worse.

This week's game is crucial to the Giants (I know, every game is crucial) because with a win, they can put some distance between themselves and the loser of the Cowboys-Eagles game. They would remain 2 1/2 games in front of the winner and hold a 3 1/2 game lead on the loser with seven games remaining.

Beating the Bengals, however, won't be easy. It's certainly doable, but nothing is ever easy in this league and the Giants always seem to make things tough on themselves. Cincinnati is on a 4-game losing streak, but they've been competitive. Three of those losses came at home, too, so the 12th man might not have much starch left at this point.

They lost to Miami by 4, led the Browns after three quarters, were tied with Pittsburgh in the fourth quarter and went blow-for-blow with Brother Peyton last week. They will give the Giants a game today, you can bank on that. The effort will be there.

Sam Spiegelman: A.J. Green thinks there are holes in the Giants' defense, and rightfully so. BenJarvis Green-Ellis is not Isaac Redman, and New York will not allow another 100-yard rusher this week. Expect the Giants to force Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton to throw the ball enough to force pressure and turnovers. Offensively, the Bengals are pretty tough up front, so this may have to be the slump-breaker for Eli Manning. Perhaps this marks the bounce-back game for Hakeem Nicks, too. Giants score, and score often, and roll into their bye week with a new-found swagger. Giants 35, Bengals 24

Paul Tierney (Giants 101): The Giants have not been playing championship-caliber football as of late. They have given up 1,263 yards of total offense over the last three weeks. Furthermore, Eli Manning has been completely out of sync with his wide receivers, which resulted in his pathetic 41.1 quarterback rating in Week 9. Despite Big Blue's shortcomings on both sides of the football, they have either won or given themselves a chance to win every game they have played this season. The Bengals enter this game with the league's 19th ranked pass defense to go along with a front seven that has allowed opponents to rush for 117 yards per game. AJ Green, Andy Dalton and Co. are more than capable of pulling this game out at home, but they will have to beat a better football team to do so. The Giants should roll into their bye week with a decisive victory on Sunday. Giants 30, Bengals 17

Jared Kruger: With the Bengals on a 4 game losing streak, Big Blue will find a way to extend that streak. They are looking for redemption after logging in some weak performances the past few weeks. Eli will break out of his "slump" and bring New York a much-needed victory heading into the bye. Giants 31, Bengals 21

?I feel like they?ve got a lot of holes in their defense....Their front four, they get so much pressure on the quarterback. A lot of people don?t have that much time to get the big plays on them.?

Nothing wrong with the young man's eyesight. The Giants are a kill-or-be-killed defense. If they don't get to the QB, as Bill Chadwick would say: "Katy, bar the door!" It's no mistake their games resemble a Hearns-Hagler fight. Haymaker city. If their offense whiffs on few, they get hammered by the media. The defense keeps getting a pass.

Tom Coughlin on the Giants' opponent this week: the Cincinnati Bengals.....

"We?re looking forward to getting back on the practice field, preparing for the Cincinnati Bengal team, a team that was 3-1 earlier in the year, has lost four very close games of late. Just a week ago, had lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 34-17, a very, very good football game. Then, against the Broncos, they were down 17-3 and came back to take a 20-17 lead, and eventually lost that game as well. They had some turnovers in that game. They looked like they were going to be in pretty good shape.

They are a team that?s built in the style of the AFC North, in that they?re attempting to overtake the Steelers. They?re built much like that. They have a big, strong and powerful offensive line. A.J. Green is an excellent receiver, a deep threat. (Andy) Dalton being the young quarterback who was a Pro Bowler a year ago. They were in the playoffs a year ago. They run the ball, (BenJarvus) Green-Ellis is there, as you know, as a free agent. He?s a powerful runner, a lot of the style that you see is emblematic of the formations that we just played against.
