Frazier upbeat after 6-1 win 00:01:09
When asked how's Frazier been, Callaway gives a straight faced 'awful' answer, but then praises the third baseman.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway tried, but he couldn't keep a straight face for long trying to downplay how hot Todd Frazier has been at the plate.

"It's been terrible," Callaway said after Frazier went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a pivotal three-run home run in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field.

Then Callaway smirked and let his real feelings show.

Frazier lifts Mets to 6-1 win 00:01:17
Todd Frazier set the tone for the Mets 6-1 win with a 3-run home run in the 1st inning. Noah Syndergaard pitched seven 1-hit innings

The Mets put together a total team effort in a 6-1 win over the Rockies on Sunday at Citi Field that secured a series victory over Colorado. >> Box score

Five things to know from Sunday's game...

1) Noah Syndergaard was the best version of himself. As someone who struggles to hold on runners, he picked off Trevor Story -- one of only two batters he walked -- in the first inning. A leadoff single by Nolan Arenado in the fourth was the only hit against him. The right-hander whiffed seven and lowered his ERA to 4.45. Syndergaard was on the attack all afternoon. More importantly, he succeeded in putting hitters away, needing just 98 pitches to fire seven scoreless innings. During his postgame news conference, manager Mickey Callaway commended Syndergaard's efforts in covering first base on several balls to the right side of the infield.

Mickey Callaway, Brandon Nimmo and Jacob deGrom discuss the Mets 12-2 rout of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Monday night.

Mets' RHP Jacob deGrom won his first game since May 18 by striking out seven batters in eight strong innings in Monday's 12-2 win against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

DeGrom (5-2) allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits as he threw at least seven innings for the seventh consecutive start.

In deGrom's five-start winless streak, he recorded a 1.25 ERA and had 44 strikeouts in 36 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) in that span. However, the Mets scored more than one run just once in those starts.

Mets LHP Steven Matz had one of the worst outings of his career, giving up seven runs and nine hits as he was pulled in the second inning in Sunday's 13-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field.

"It just wasn't really sharp today," Matz (2-3) said, according to the New York Daily News' Daniel Popper. "I was leaving balls right over the middle of the plate, and they were hitting it."

After allowing four runs in the first inning, Matz left the game after surrendering a three-run home run to Nolan Arenado in the second inning that put New York in a 7-0 hole.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins praised relievers Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia for shutting down the Colorado Rockies in the eighth and ninth innings in Sunday's 6-4 win at Citi Field.

After Neil Walker's three-run home run gave the Mets a lead, Reed and Familia shut the door, striking out five of the seven batters they faced en route to Familia's league-leading 37th save of the year.

"What Jeurys has done, I'd have to say Addison Reed has been an accomplice to it all," Collins said Thursday, according to MLB.com's Joshua Needelman. "When it came to picking the All-Star team, one of the things I heard from two or three managers was, 'You know what, their closers are having big years, but their setup guys were the guys who really needed consideration.' I said, 'I know exactly what you're talking about, because I've got one.'"

Terry Collins told reporters that he held a team meeting after the Mets lost to the Rockies, 6-1, on Friday.

The Mets, who have lost three in a row, have fallen to 53-49 and 2 1/2 games out of the second Wild Card spot.

They are currently batting a league-worst .202 with runners in scoring position, after going 0-for-8 Friday night. The 1969 Padres are the only team with a lower batting average with runners in scoring position over the course of a full season.

"These players, they're smart guys. They're getting it from their friends, everybody else. 'You guys aren't hitting with runners in scoring position,'" Collins said after the game. "And so, it starts to build and starts to build and all of a sudden they go up there and their heads are not where it needs to be, because they're worried about making an out or not getting a hit."

deGrom strikes out Dahl 00:00:17
Jacob deGrom gets David Dahl swinging to cap his sixth scoreless inning in a 2-1 loss to the Rockies on Thursday.

Mets RHP Jacob deGrom recorded a no-decision after throwing seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday at Citi Field.

DeGrom's win-loss record remained at 6-5 despite pitching at least seven scoreless innings for the second time in his last three starts after Jeurys Familia blew his second consecutive save. The Mets scored two or fewer runs for the seventh time in deGrom's last 10 starts, and deGrom has not recorded a win in any of those.

"Our pitchers, they live on the edge," manager Terry Collins later said. "It's hard to do every night."

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he does not plan to take RHP Ivan Nova out of the rotation after allowing at least four runs for the fifth time over his past six starts in Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

Nova lost to the Rockies for the second time in the past seven days, giving up six runs (five earned) and eight hits in four-plus innings.

Asked whether the Yankees have a pitcher like Luis Severino or Luis Cessa who could take Nova's spot in the rotation, Girardi said, "As of right now, no."

  • Nova (5-5) allowed three runs in the first inning and left the game after allowing a double and walk to lead off the fifth inning. Over his last six starts, Nova is 2-4 with a 6.88 ERA and has given up at least four runs in five of them.
  • Nick Goody allowed a two-run home run to Nolan Arenado in the sixth inning that gave the Rockies an 8-3 lead.
  • Charlie Blackmon hit two home runs as the Rockies' 1-4 hitters combined to go 11 for 18 with six RBIs.
  • Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran, Didi Gregorius and Rob Refsnyder each had two hits for the Yankees, who lost their second straight game overall and third straight to Colorado after getting swept on the road last week.

Chris Carelli, SNY.TV

The Yankees need to think long and hard about allowing Nova to make another start. As has been the case throughout his career, Nova teased fans with a short string of quality efforts only to fall apart and regress to the less than mediocre pitcher that he is.

New York Yankees RHP Nathan Eovaldi said he felt frustrated after allowing six runs and eight hits in four innings in the Yankees' 13-10 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday at Coors Field.

Since winning five starts in a row in May, Eovaldi is winless in his last three starts in June, going 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA and allowing 16 runs and 26 hits in 14 2/3 innings. He has yet to pitch six full innings since May 29.

While the New York Yankees play the Colorado Rockies four times and the Minnesota Twins seven times over the next two weeks, outfielder Carlos Beltran said the Yankees aren't looking past their opponents.

"They're big league ball clubs. It doesn't matter what the record says, you have to go out there, approach the game the right way, try to make sure you jump ahead and do the right things," Beltran said, according to the New York Post's Zach Braziller. "Sometimes when you go to places where teams are not playing well, sometimes you put your guard down and say, 'We should go out there and win these games.'"

The Yankees are coming off a grueling part of their schedule that included 40 games in 41 days that included six games against the Baltimore Orioles, six games against the Toronto Blue Jays and a West Coast road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland A's.
