October was one disappointment after another for the New York Rangers, who went 4-7-2 during the season's first month and spent more time closer to last place than a playoff spot.

But as the Rangers prepare to host the Columbus Blue Jackets at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, they are showing signs of life and will be in pursuit of their fourth straight victory. >> Read more

Remember when Jason Chimera wasn't a productive New York Islander? That is a thing of the past, as the veteran has found himself during this recent hot streak.

Chimera scored the Islanders' fourth goal in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets when he tried to send a cross ice pass through the neutral zone, but it was broken up. The puck bounced back to him, so he skated into the high slot and ripped a wrister to beat Sergei Bobrovsky on his glove side.

The 37-year-old Chimera, who signed a two-year deal with New York last summer, has scored five of his 10 goals over the last seven games, as the Islanders have 11 points during that stretch.

The Islanders (19-17-6) begin a stretch against the Eastern Conference's top three teams on Tuesday when they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets (32-10-4) to Brooklyn.

According to STATS:

  • The Islanders have picked up points in four straight games for only the second time this season. New York has fired at least 35 shots in each of its last three games for the first time since January 2-7, 2016.
  • The Blue Jackets won back-to-back games for the first time since their 16-game winning streak with Sunday's 7-6 barnburner in Ottawa. It was the fourth time this season Columbus has scored 7+ goals, second in the league behind Pittsburgh (5).
  • New York is 7-0-3 in its last 10 skates at home against Columbus. The 10-game run is tied for the Islanders' longest active home point streak versus a single opponent with the Oilers.
  • Cam Atkinson netted his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season in the win at the Senators. Atkinson's five multi-goal games are tied for the most in the NHL this season and equals his total from the previous two years combined.
  • John Tavares took a career-high 10 shots in the overtime loss to the Flyers on Sunday. The last Islander to take 10+ shots without scoring a goal was Kyle Okposo on January 2, 2016.
  • Sergei Bobrovsky is 12-4-0 with a 2.24 GAA and .928 save percentage in 17 career games against the Islanders. Since 2010-11, only Henrik Lundvist (13) has more wins versus New York than Bobrovsky.

NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders picked up five points in the first three games of a season-long six-game homestand. But the real challenge begins Tuesday night, when the Islanders host the Columbus Blue Jackets at Barclays Center.

The visit by the Blue Jackets begins at three-game stretch in which the Islanders host the top three teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Atlantic Division-leading Montreal Canadiens arrive Thursday and the Washington Capitals, who beat the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday to break a tie with the Blue Jackets not only atop the Metropolitan Division but the entire NHL, head to Barclays Center on Jan. 31.

The New Jersey Devils avoided matching their longest losing streak of the season by beating an arch-rival.

Now they can't afford another slip-up against a Metropolitan Division foe that has been a thorn in their side.

The Devils have dropped four straight to the Columbus Blue Jackets heading into Thursday night's matchup at Nationwide Arena.

There was no celebrating when the final regular?season game at Nassau Coliseum came to an end. When the contest concluded, the Islanders had fallen 5-4 to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the shootout, and failed to clinch home-ice advantage for their opening round playoff matchup with the Washington Capitals.

All the cards seemed to go the Islanders way on Saturday before the game. The Capitals lost to the New York Rangers in afternoon contest at Verizon Center to set up a meaningful game in Uniondale.

"It's disappointing," John Tavares said. "I think the way the crowd was today was incredible. I think we felt the urgency, I thought we brought that. It's just disappointing. We had the opportunity in front of us and we didn't capitalize."

The Islanders travel to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets. The game can be seen on MSG Plus. It is also available on radio on WRHU 88.7 FM and LI New Radio 103.9 FM.

Two important points are on the line when the Islanders meet the Blue Jackets tonight at Nationwide Arena.

After tonight the Islanders (45-27-5) have four games remaining in the regular season. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at six, so a combination of a win tonight and a loss by the Ottawa Senators will push them closer to their goal. Although defeating the Blue Jackets will be no easy task.
