The combine always has players that create a buzz, players that may or may not have been on the radar of many NFL teams. This year is no different. Now, before you ask, you can bet the Giants and their scouts already knew about these guys. Now we know.

DE/OLB Vic Beasley, Clemson (6'3", 246) - Helped his draft stock a great deal the past few days and is now raked the 4th top pass rushing prospect in the draft by NFL.com's Mike Mayock. Even with the return of JPP and the rising prospects of Robert Ayers, Kerry Wynn, Devon Kennard and Damontre Moore, the Giants can always use another pass-rushing option. And a quality LB. Chances are Beasley isn't the BPA come the Giants' turn, but is things break right, he could be there at 41, when the Giants select in Round 2.

The Giants hit the jackpot last year with WR Odell Beckham Jr. at the NFL Draft. With an improving Rueben Randle and Victor Cruz (knee), who is expected to return in time for the regular season, the Giants could be considered receiver rich.

GM Jerry Reese feels that way, too, but he's not averse to taking another WR high in this year's draft.

What am I looking for at this combine? As a Giant enthusiast, I'm looking for players that dominate in the trenches. The Giants have a glut of players that possess average height, weight, strength and speed. What they need going forward are a few players of exceptional size and strength.

In short, no one on the Giants' current roster scares anyone. This spring, they need to find players that do. The objective is to win the battle in trenches. If I'm the Giants, I'm looking to grab one starter on the OL (preferably at LT) and one difference-maker on the defensive line.

The New York Jets GM Mike Maccagnan is scheduled to meet with the agent for defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson at the combine in Indianapolis (ESPN, Feb. 17).

Wilkerson is entering the final year of his contract and is due to earn $6.96 million in 2015. The Jets have made it clear they'd like to lock Wilkerson into a long-term deal, and with close to $50 million in cap room, they have plenty of space to work with. Though former GM John Idzik was unable to get it done last season, as both sides failed to come close to an agreement.

The Jets have the time and resources to do the right thing in locking up the team's best player to a long-term deal this year. ?We would like to see?the Jets settle any contract talks?with the face of the franchise before the start of training camp, if not the start of free agency.

The NFL Scouting Combine will be held this week in Indianapolis and, just like that, many will be able to put faces to this year's draft prospects.

For years, I took the results of the combine with a grain of salt. No one really cares how fast a 300 lb lineman runs a 40 yard dash. Or you shouldn't, anyway. If that big guy has to run 40 yards during the game, either something very good - or very bad - just happened.

South Carolina DE Jadaveon Clowney lit up the NFL Combine yesterday with his speed and agility, but is he going to be a star in the NFL? His final season at SC was less than impressive and his desire and commitment are still in question.

He could be fool's gold. There's a buzz that if you need to improve your defense, take Buffalo LB Khalil Mack, who is guaranteed to dominate in the NFL.

The Houston Texans have the first pick in the draft and are in dire need of a QB. Clowney may be too good to pass up, but there's a reason the Texans have the top pick: they need players. If I were them, I'd trade out of that pick and still get my QB.

Defensive linemen and linebackers go Saturday and defensive backs are up on Sunday. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will hold a Q&A at 12:45 p.m. today.

Michigan OT Taylor Lewan was measured at 6-foot-7 1/8?and 309 lbs. He's certainly a sizable asset for any team to put on their O-line. On Thursday, Lewan spent some time explaining away the sexual misconduct rumors and accusations following him out of Ann Arbor. (Rock)

Notre Dame LB Manti Te'o did nothing to increase his value today at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. His 4.82 time in the 40-yard dash disappointed many NFL scouts, executives and coaches to the point where he has fallen out of favor and off many of their draft boards.

As per Chris Wesserling of NFL.com:

To put Te'o's run in perspective, recall that 346-pound?Kansas City Chiefs?defensive tackle?Dontari Poe?nearly equaled that time at 4.87 last year. Checking in smaller than expected at 241 pounds, Te'o needed to crack 4.75 to erase doubts about his athleticism and ability to play all three downs.?Baltimore Ravens?coach?John Harbaugh?was?less than impressed.

While we wait to see if the Giants get priced out of the market for pending free agent TE Martellus Bennett, there's suddenly plenty of other options at TE ?bubbling to the surface. We'll get to those in a minute, but first:

Is TE really a "need" position at this point? In this man's NFL, you not only need one good one, you need two. Look at New England and New Orleans. A good TE - or two - with a star QB throwing to them is the copycat strategy teams are gravitating towards.

Our man Jimmy Kempski of NFC East blogging fame has been scouring the transcripts of participants at the NFL Combine this week to gain some hints on where some of these potential NFLers would like to spend their careers. Of the NFC East teams mentioned below, the Eagles and Cowboys seem to hold the edge over the Giants and Redskins

From Jimmy.....

Some of these are interesting to note (like TE Nick Kasa of Colorado), but take these for what they?re worth (usually just a reporter asking a prospect a direct question about a specific team). If you?re a Skins fan, read no further. Nobody mentioned your team that I can see so far. In alphabetical order:

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was on the podium at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this afternoon, the site of his Super Bowl triumph a little over a year ago....

On not having Andy Reid in the NFC East any longer:

The NFL Combine is thankfully over. Not that I don't like watching future NFL stars in action, it's just that I really don't have any idea who will be an impact player coming away from this experience. The game is still football after all.

Several years ago, a young lineman (who will remain unnamed) was getting grilled about his 40 time. He laughed.

"If I have to run 40 yards on one play, either something very good - or bad - happened. Either way, the play will be way past me at that point..."

The Giants are an enigma come draft weekend. So it seems. In reality, they are not an enigma. They publicly state they will choose the best player available when their turn comes. And that's exactly what they do every April.

This year, every professional and amateur draftnik has the Giants drafting a TE in the first round. My take? The same as it is every year - depends on who's there.....

The Giants have seen what their defense looks like with Osi Umenyiora and without him. They obviously prefer it with him. The general consensus, though, is that the cap-strapped Giants will not extend the 30 year-old strip-sack specialist's contract, sending him packing to the highest bidder.

Not so fast. The other day, Osi said he wants to remain with the club, even if it meant taking a cut in salary.?Yesterday, at the NFL Combine, Giants' GM Jerry Reese sounded as if the team was willing to accommodate Osi....from Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger:

The Giants' have had a need at linebacker for the better part of a decade, but they haven't spent many high draft picks on the position. This year features a limited crop of linebackers with a lot of potential.

1. Luke Kuechly - Kuechly is a tackling machine, but lacks big time athleticism.

"I feel like I was just here....I was," the coach said.

He, of course, was referring to his team's victory there three weeks ago in Super Bowl XLVI. Today's presser had a different tone as the context has changed from the Super Bowl to the NFL Combine.

It's the last day before the combine begins and the talk is heating up. Don't get too used to your draft boards, they're about to change dramatically.

Many teams will be seeking secondary help in this draft. They may not get it at safety - especially strong safety. Our colleague at CSNWashington, Rich Tandler, explains:

The crop of strong safety candidates is exceptionally weak this year. Mark Barron of Alabama is the only one who seems to have a chance of starting in the NFL in 2012, and he is sidelined with a double sports hernia. It is unlikely that he will be able to work out for teams before the draft. His work on film at Alabama will be good enough to get him drafted, perhaps even somewhere in the first round.

The D-line carried the Giants on their miraculous playoff run and even if they trade Osi they will be the best in the division.

Marvin Austin will return in 2012 to add a pass rusher at DT to go along with JPP & Tuck at DE. Canty is a great leader that adds a good veteran to the mix. Hard to upgrade this group, but I?m sure Jerry Reese will try.

The Giants? O-Line really came through in the playoffs and Kevin Boothe was a great addition along the interior of their line. The Giants could add a bit more youth to the group but McKenzie, Snee, and Diehl are all still playing at a high level.

Today we begin with the QB?s and WR?s. It is safe to say that the Giants are set at one of the two positions, but wide receiver is a position that could be upgraded in the draft.
