Contenders

If you lived through 1991-1992 and 1993-1994, you can distinctively recall the swagger of a franchise expected to win just about every game handily. The roster was well-stocked with threats three lines deep. And whilst you cannot really replicate that architecture in a salary-capped era, my point is that an ensemble which is a contender is something you know when you see it.

Hockey Rodent

Leslie Treff says that right now "the team just doesn?t have enough to win consistently."

I sort of agree with this. I don't go into games and think that the Rangers are gonna dominate the way that I think the Red Wings, Penguins, Capitals or the Canucks might in a game in game out basis. The Rangers are good and a playoff team but there is still space between them and the top four teams in the east. As I have said before, this season had three goals to me, a winning record at home, clinching a playoff spot before the end of the season and winning a round in the playoffs. If the Rangers accomplish all of that and see players progress, I will consider that a successful season and something that the team can build towards for next year.

He said that he felt good about playing fewer games last season and he feels like he is in good shape right now. He expects to play in 3 preseason games.

Hank has expressed his thoughts on higher expectations before and also said that he had to adjust to playing in fewer games last season.

?I think that every year that we?ve improved. We?ve got a good group of young guys. Every year in training camp there?s an optimism about the coming year. We?re always excited and this year?s no different,? Staal said.

?We definitely (are looking forward) to the opportunity and the challenge of trying to win the Stanley Cup, and hopefully we can do it.?

In The Record, Henrik Lundqvist says that the Rangers are a better team this season than they were last season and because of that the expectations around the team should be higher.

Hank says that adding Brad Richards brings more "edge" and skill to the lineup.

Hank wants the pressure. He wants the expectations. He is a money guy and plays his best when the Rangers need him the most. With a bit more rest this season, hopefully a healthy one from Marty Biron, Hank should be fresh and ready to lead the Rangers in the playoffs. The team has been built around him and the overall talent level is finally starting to reach his own.

They have balance across the lineup and especially at the top and bottom. Every line will have some grit and some scoring to it. Some will have a little more of one than the other, with the Pack Line fitting in nicely both ways, but this is how good teams are constructed. Balance is the key.

"With our lineup, we need to be a team that competes for the Stanley Cup every year," Callahan said. "It's not good enough anymore just to get to the playoffs. We need to do something once we're there."

Callahan to Newsday

These are great words to hear. It will be even better to see them come to life in April/May this season.

?I feel like we are,? Callahan said. ?The acquisition of Richards will help the team out tremendously, having a No. 1 center to go with Gabby (Marian Gaborik), we?re that much stronger. I think we?ve gone through the process for a couple of years of building and learning (John Tortorella?s) system. Now, we have to look at ourselves as contenders.?

?I can?t even tell you how much I?m looking forward to the season,? Dubinsky said. ?With all the guys we have coming back plus the signings we?ve made with Richie [Brad Richards] and Mike Rupp, I think we?re going to be a contender in the East; I really feel that way.

Brandon Dubinsky to Larry Brooks in the NY Post

I can't wait for the season. I'm going through a bunch of posts to set up up categories to make things easier to find and I keep coming across video from last season and it makes me crazy that we are still about six weeks away from training camp opening.

At ESPN NY, Mike Hume writes that the Rangers window to win the Stanley Cup is now open.

Hume says that the Rangers window may end in 2014 when they have multiple players eligible for free agency.

Let the hype for the Rangers begin! They overachieved for most of last season and outworked team after team and then fell in five games to the Caps because they lacked the scoring, power play and talent to compete. Brad Richards fixes those issues and when you combine that with the Rangers hard-working and young team, you have the look of a contender.

It means a lot to us players to see management backing up what they have been saying that they are trying to build something here, starting with the core, and signing us all to multi-year deals. It shows us that we are the ones they want to go into the future with, so now we have to live up to that on our end.

Ryan Callahan to Blueshirts United

John Tortorella has talked about the "core" for a long time and the Rangers locked up those players because they personified what Rangers hockey has become. They are just pieces though. The core is something that grows though. Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh were added last year. Maybe others will be this year, but when the time comes, the Rangers will reward those players because they don't want to move on without them.

We are a confident group. And I think last year was a big step for us because it's not easy nowadays to make the playoffs in this league. So that was a big step, and I think we are going to build on that, except this time we want to be near the top of the conference and be favorites going in.

Steve Eminger to Blueshirts United

this team believes in themselves and think that they are ready to become contenders. Talk is cheap though and the team needs to back it up on the ice. If they build on last season, they won't have trouble finding themselves in the thick of things in the Eastern Conference.

"The younger guys who aren't so much younger anymore, like myself, like Dubi, like Staal, we know what it takes now," Callahan said. "We're not building anymore, we're a contender and we have to approach the season that way."

Ryan Callahan to Newsday

In terms of age, they are still relatively young, but since they have all played at least four seasons, with Staal entering his fifth and Dubi and Cally entering their sixth. They have experience as being leaders now and need to continue to build on that and bring the Rangers to the next level.

?I have?high expectations for myself and for the team. The last couple of years we?ve talked about being contenders. Now I truly believe we have the team to do it, not just talk about it.?

Brandon Dubinsky to Larry Brooks of the NY Post

In the morning edition of the paper, Dubinsky added, "Our young guys are veterans now. We have high expectations for ourselves. I think we can be contenders in the East. I really believe that."

There is still a lot of youth spread around the Rangers lineup, but they are mature young players like Ryan McDonagh, Michael Sauer and Derek Stepan. Everything works from the goaltender and the top line out. If Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik can make music together and the Pack Line plays like the Pack Line, maybe the Rangers can be better than the sixth place I think they will finish in next season.

Brian Boyle made similar comments, here.

Everyone needs to look at what they did this past season and see where they can be better.

At Blueshirts United, Michael Sauer talks about how he likes that expectations for the team will be raised after they signed Brad Richards.

As a young guy it shows that (management) has confidence in us, as well, knowing that they are adding Richards with the expectation that we should win. That's what you want as a player. You just don't want to get through the season, you want to win every game. And being in New York, I really learned last year that the mentality is every game is a must win.
It is a reflection on the whole organization when expectations are raised. The team is in the position that it is because guys like Sauer, Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust all played above their expectation level. Now the expectations get raised a little bit and the team needs to meet them. They were very strong mentally last season and were able to come off of bad losses with big wins and play hard. Hopefully the rest of the team feels the same way and they will face these new expectations head on.

"I was so excited! Obviously I only played against him once when we were in Dallas, but he's an amazing player with amazing talent. Having a guy like that on the team that can really put the other team on its heels is going to be a huge advantage. He'll be a big key to our team, and it's just awesome that we were able to get him when so many other teams were going after him."

Sauer to Blueshirts United

Awesome.

That is what it's all about. The guys who stepped up this year, need to keep doing it. It sounds simple, but the Rangers are a team in every sense of the word and need all members of the team to improve so that they can be better an keep building towards being contenders.
