EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- One of the most interesting position battles at Giants training camp is starting to look like it's over before it ever really began.

Rookie Darian Thompson has emerged as the clear leader in the battle for the starting free safety job this summer - so much so that even coach Ben McAdoo acknowledged on Monday that the 22-year-old is now the favorite to win the job. Thompson has been getting virtually all of the first-team reps next to Landon Collins in recent practices, along with plenty of second-team reps, too.

Nat Berhe didn't play in a game in his second season with the New York Giants and learned a lot about life in the NFL.

It can be taken away very quickly.

The safety missed all of last season with a calf injury that turned out to be a little more than a pulled muscle. He developed a blood clot in the leg and had to have it removed.

Meriweather, 31, started the Giants first 11 games this season, before a knee injury caused him to miss the last two.

He had 53 total tackles and two interceptions with the Giants this season.

No, not that Taylor.

Yesterday, I listed rookie safety Cooper Taylor as a potential impact player on the Giants' defense this year. He may or may not be, but one thing cannot be disputed: Taylor is certainly an interesting prospect.
