Things you should know about tonight's game...

1) Wright stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth, as he drank in the thundering roars from the Mets faithful. It was a very quick at-bat, swinging at the first pitch from Jose Urena in a groundout to third base. Despite the out, the crowd still cheered Wright as he walked into the dugout. He will have more chances to hit tomorrow where he is expected to play third

Mets RHP Corey Oswalt allowed two runs in five innings against the Nationals on Saturday in what was his longest outing since Aug. 16.

The only runs allowed came in the bottom of he third when he allowed a two-run homer to Trea Turner. Oswalt has pitched well since allowing five runs on four hits without recording an out against the Dodgers on Sept. 4.

"[Oswalt] has got enough weapons to go out there and compete and he's been doing that for us quite a bit," manager Mickey Callaway said after Saturday's game.

The Mets scratched Jacob deGrom from Sunday's scheduled start due to rain, pushing him back to Monday while Corey Oswalt started Sunday against the Phillies.

Manager Mickey Callaway said the team didn't want deGrom to have a rain-shortened outing due to the forecast. Though the game was not delayed -- the Mets beat the Phillies 6-4 -- deGrom will instead start Monday against the Marlins at 7:10 p.m.

DeGrom hasn't had a start of fewer than six innings since May 13, when he threw a 45-pitch first inning in his first start back from the disabled list. Since, he has thrown at least seven innings in 14 of his last 20 outings.

Danny Abriano, SNY.tv | Twitter | Aside from Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler, and Steven Matz, the Mets have one spot in their starting rotation that has been taken up by a mix of Jason Vargas, Corey Oswalt, and others this season.

And even though Vargas has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year, dealt with multiple injuries, and shuffled between the bullpen and rotation, he'll likely have a regular spot in the rotation down the stretch instead of Oswalt. But Oswalt does have a fan in Mickey Callaway.

"I'd like to see him pitch as much as possible," Callaway said over the weekend. "I think what we need to focus on is that he's pitching every fifth day, and it doesn't have to be here. We have to get him in a routine to see what he can do because if he does the right things, he's got the stuff."

Callaway on Cespedes' health 00:00:32
Mets manager Mickey Callaway discusses the injury status of outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

The Mets will be "proactive" with Yoenis Cespedes, who was activated from the DL on Friday, and manager Mickey Callaway said to not be surprised if Cespedes is a late scratch from the lineup from time-to-time.

The reason, according to Callaway, is that Cespedes has a new pregame routine, and there might be certain days where the team doesn't think he's in the best spot to stay healthy throughout the game.

The Cespedes at first base experiment also might be on, with Callaway saying he could see some time there -- though he added Cespedes still has some work to do to get fully comfortable at the position...

After a rough go in his first career start, Mets RHP Corey Oswalt was looking to redeem himself in Toronto on Wednesday.

Oswalt was given short notice that Jacob deGrom wasn't going to make his normally scheduled start in Miami last week, and the lack of preparation seemed to cost him as he was out after allowing six runs over 2.2 innings. This time around,

Oswalt had as much time as he needed to dial in, and things went a lot smoother for the 24-year-old.

Mets RHP Corey Oswalt got the spot start for Friday's series opener against the Marlins, and it wasn't an outing to remember.

Oswalt was handed the ball in place of Jacob deGrom, who was dealing with a family issue.  The righty only had one appearance with the Mets this season, which dated back to April 25.

It was a good start to his second outing in the bigs, as Oswalt got through a 1-2-3 first inning. The second inning was also pretty tranquil as Justin Bour's leadoff single did no damage.

According to Triple-A Las Vegas manager Tony DeFrancesco, Mets RHP Corey Oswalt was placed on DL, per Las Vegas Review Journal's Betsy Helfand.

Oswalt has been dealing with lat tightness recently, and it appears to be too much to pitch through. The righty made one appearances for the Mets this season, tossing 4.2 innings where he allowed two earned runs on two hits while striking out four.

With Las Vegas this season, Oswalt owns a 6.18 ERA over six starts.

Jason Vargas has been so bad since making his Mets debut last month that it's almost impossible to believe. The numbers: Three starts spanning 12.1 innings, with 19 runs allowed on 26 hits (including five home runs), while walking seven and striking out nine -- and failing to toss more than 4.2 innings in any of those starts.

Vargas is allowing hits on nearly half the balls that have been put in play against him (.447 BABIP). That's insane and will come down a lot, but he's also allowing the worst line drive percantage (26.0) and hard hit percentage (38.5) of his career. So, while Vargas should improve, what happens if he doesn't do so to the extent required to keep his rotation spot? Here are four internal options the Mets have to replace Vargas if it comes to it...

R (APP): Kingsport Mets 5, Johnson City Cardinals 3?

Oh, Appy League. This game turned in a four-run Kingsport Mets' fourth that featured a three-run homer by C Jeyckol De Leon. The pitch sequence that led to the homer was inexplicable. Cardinals' starter Luis Perdomo threw the 22-year-old De Leon a 1-1 slider. De Leon yanked it foul, 325 feet off the wall in left field. Rather than coming back with a fastball (ideally in), Perdomo tried another slider on the subsequent pitch, hung it, and De Leon banged it over the wall fair. De Leon will be 23 this summer and is in his fourth year between the GCL and the Appy League, so not really a name to remember.

20--year-old CF Champ Stuart is the guy who has stood out to me. Friday, he drilled a hanging slider up the right-centerfield gap for a double and muscled a single to left, walked twice and stole a base. He would have stolen another base, but for a foul at the plate that sent him back to first. His routes in center show his inexperience. The 2013 6th round pick arm is at least a 55, but he's still learning how to use it. He's hitting .297/.509/.486 with 15 walks and 14 strikeouts in 12 games. I did an interview with him that I will transcribe for next week.

SSA: @ Aberdeen Ironbirds (BAL) 7, Brooklyn Cyclones 5?

We've seen this story before. The Cyclones built a 5-1 lead after three innings but could not hold it thanks to a five-run Aberdeen fifth inning.

SS Gavin Cecchini was 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI and his third error of the year. He's hit .250/.295/.300 in his first 10 games as a Cyclone with two doubles, three walks and eight strikeouts. That seems like a reasonable first week and a half for the 19-year-old. Remove his season-opening 0-for-7 and he's hitting .303 (10-for-33) and now we're into Small Sample Size Silliness.
