Despite the Devils lacking on the defensive front last season, G Cory Schneider believes the group the team already has, per NJ.com's Chris Ryan.

Instead of the defense needing to improve, Schneider thinks the goals allowed last season were his fault. He knows that if he plays his game, there is bound to be a drastic change.

"Defensively, we're returning a lot of the guys we had last year. Goal prevention may have been more of a me issue than a team defense issue," Schneider said. "If I can play the way I know I can, it will obviously clear up any holes for defensive issues we have. I trust our defensemen. They player hard last year, they played their hearts out. We expect the same from them this year."

The Devils open the season Thursday night at 7:30 against the Panthers in Florida.

According to STATS...

  • The Panthers topped 100 points for the first time as they claimed their first Atlantic Division title last season. Florida ranked seventh overall with 2.44 goals against per game, just barely edging out 1996-97 (2.45) for the fewest in franchise history.
  • The Devils saw a six-win improvement last season but still missed out on the playoffs for the fourth season in a row in 2015-16. The four-year playoff drought is the second-longest in team history following a nine-year absence from 1978-79 through 1986-87.
  • Jaromir Jagr was second on the Panthers in both goals (27) and assists (39), but led the team with 66 points. It was Jagr's 18th season with 65+ points, tied with Ron Francis and Wayne Gretzky for the second most in NHL history (Gordie Howe leads with 20).
  • Adam Henrique and Kyle Palmieri tied with a team-high 30 goals last season. It marked the first time the Devils had multiple 30-goal scorers since the trio of Ilya Kovalchuk (37), Zach Parise (31), and David Clarkson (30) in 2011-12.
  • Roberto Luongo was tied for fourth in the NHL last season with 35 wins, matching his franchise record from 2005-06. Luongo's six seasons with at least 35 wins ranks sixth all-time, trailing only Marc-Andre Fleury (7) and Henrik Lundqvist (7) for the most among active goalies.
  • Cory Schneider set a new career-high last season with 27 wins, the most by a Devil since Martin Brodeur's 31 in 2011-12. Schneider led all NHL goaltenders last season with a save percentage of .920 or better in 37 games.

New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider was faced with the difficult task of replacing all-time great Martin Brodeur. But Scheider has made the most of his opportunity and once again solidified the Devils in goal for years to come, according to Mike Morreale of NHL.com.

"I was like, 'Wow, Marty Brodeur is there and he's been there forever,'" Schneider said. "I knew the Devils had been his team for a long time, so I had to figure out a way to come in, treat Marty and the situation with a lot of respect, and just go from there."

While reaching the playoffs is a minimum expectation for the Rangers, it would be a boon to the rebuilding Devils after failing to qualify for three straight seasons.

This month will be vital for New Jersey with eight of its 13 opponents currently sitting higher in the standings. The Devils face the Rangers three times over that span.

"It's sort of make-or-break time for us to make the playoffs this next stretch," Stempniak said. "It's in division games so those are points where you beat the teams you're chasing and you close the gap pretty quickly, and if you lose, it can run away from you pretty quickly."

The Devils host the Flames on Tuesday night.

According to STATS...

  • The Flames won the first matchup between these clubs this season, 3-2, and have won six consecutive games against the Devils -- their longest active winning streak versus any opponent. Calgary last lost to New Jersey back on November 24, 2010 (2-1 in a shootout).
  • The Devils have just two wins in their last seven games and will be looking to snap their current two game home losing streak. New Jersey's six game slide against Calgary is tied for its longest active losing streak versus any foe (Avalanche).
  • Calgary has lost three of its last four games after losing just four times in its previous 15 contests. The Flames own the worst power-play percentage in the NHL this season at 13.9 percent.
  • Jonas Hiller is 0-2-1 with a 3.66 GAA in his last four road starts and has two wins and a 2.29 GAA in six career starts against the Devils. Hiller, who will be facing New Jersey for the first time since December 20, 2013, is seven victories shy of 200 for his NHL career.
  • Cory Schneider has lost three consecutive starts against the Flames and will be seeking his first win over them since April 6, 2013 (while playing for Vancouver). With a victory, Schneider will post back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time in his career.
  • Johnny Gaudreau has 33 points (17g, 16a) in 23 home games this season compared to 10 points (2g, 8a) in 20 road games. Gaudreau has lit the lamp in two of his last four games overall.

Cory Schneider's high of being named to his first All-Star team this month has come with the low of a slump by New Jersey.

Schneider is doing his best to revive the injury-plagued Devils and can help them win consecutive games for the first time in more than two weeks while snapping a six-game losing streak against the visiting Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.

Despite Schneider's solid play in net, New Jersey (22-19-5) has taken a step back with losses in five of seven. The Devils sat within a point of the Metropolitan Division's third playoff spot before a cold stretch has dropped them four back with a week left before the All-Star break.

Poor offense is back hurting the New Jersey Devils, and bad defense is plaguing the Colorado Avalanche again.

Those problems have dropped both clubs just outside the playoff picture but could result in one having a breakout performance Thursday night in Denver.

Yet, it was the Avalanche (21-20-3) who won a low-scoring affair in New Jersey on Dec. 1, winning 2-1 behind goals by Matt Duchene and Tyson Barrie. Colorado is 8-0-1 in the past nine matchups after winning the last five - all by one goal.

New Jersey has a chance to do it again after scoring twice in the third period to beat Carolina 3-2 on Tuesday.

"We talked about wanting to get back to our identity, play hard and play for each other," said defenseman David Schlemko, who scored the go-ahead goal with 3:05 remaining. "We thought our game was alright tonight and we stuck with it."

(AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes hope a chance to rest allowed a sputtering offense the opportunity to recapture its prior form.

The New Jersey Devils look to keep breaking out of their scoring slump with another big offensive performance against the Hurricanes on Saturday night in Raleigh.

An offense that had been lethargic nearing the holiday break came to life in the Devils' most recent outing, as Kyle Palmieri, Jordin Tootoo and David Schlemko scored within a 2:12 span during the first period of Tuesday's 4-3 victory at Detroit. New Jersey (17-13-5) had managed five goals over its prior five outings and lost its previous three.
