Coach Tom Coughlin's resignation was only the first step in an offseason that promises to see major personnel changes for the New York Giants after a second consecutive 6-10 campaign.

With an estimated $50 million of salary cap space available for free agency, the Giants will have to make decisions on many of their own 19 unrestricted free agents.

Among the most important are defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, cornerback Prince Amukamara, defensive end Robert Ayers, Jr., and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins.

Damontre Moore, formerly of the New York Giants, said on ESPN New York Radio Saturday morning that he could have handled the situation that led to his release Friday better by simply walking away from teammate Cullen Jenkins.

Instead, Moore got into an altercation and then a fight with Jenkins in the locker room over some headphones that Odell Beckham Jr. handed out to his teammates. Jenkins got two pairs, Moore got none, hence the throwdown.

According to James Kratch of NJ.com, Moore was invited on the air by former teammate Steve Weatheford, who was co-hosting the show with Dave Rothenberg.

"We made the move today in the interest of both parties," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said in a press release.

Moore got into a fight with teammate Cullen Jenkins before practice on Friday over not getting free Beats headphones like other players, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (Dec. 11).

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Brandon Marshall thought Cullen Jenkins took his trash talk too far.

The New York Jets wide receiver needed to be restrained while arguing with the Giants defensive lineman in the second quarter of a 23-20 overtime win Sunday.

"I think there are some things that are off-limits," Marshall said. "I believe in trash talk. Some guys get up for that, but some things are off-limits. He made a comment about, he said (something about) my `girl.' He didn't know I was married."

Giants defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins and linebacker Jon Beason left Sunday's game in Dallas because of injuries in the first half (AP, Oct. 19).

It looked like the Giants were going to have one of those games. On their first drive of the game, the Washington Redskins picked apart the Giants defense, knocking more than 7 minutes off the clock and took an early 7-0 lead, with ease. By halftime, the score was tied at 14, but?Robert Griffin III had completed 16 of 17 passes in the first half and it looked like Big Blue's defense had finally given up on a season that is now purely based on pride.

Who knows what was said in visitor's locker room, but whatever it was, it worked. The Giants defense, led by veteran Justin Tuck who bowed inside FedEx Field?four times last night, took over in the second half and held Washington to just 96 yards in the remaining two quarters.

A clutch play by Will Hill to strip Pierre Garcon in the late minutes of the fourth quarter would seal a victory for the Giants, pushing?their record to 5-7, two games behind the division leaders Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, while eliminating the Redskins from any chance of playoff contention.

The stalwart of the Giants defense for recent memory has been the defensive line -- while the pass rush garners the most attention, it's the tackles who allow it to come to fruition.

During the first day of organized team activities Wednesday, the team revealed a new defensive tackle rotation amid off-season signing and draft picks.

With Chris Canty now a member of the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens and Rocky Bernard gone, Linval Joseph is one of only a few veterans who remain on the roster from last season.

And for a team that did not make the playoffs in 2012, there are a plethora of storylines as new faces and veterans in need to reviving their image return to the field.

In Rotoworld's newly configured post-NFL Draft lineup rankings, the New York Giants are slated at No. 11.

Offensively, the team re-signed left tackle Will Beatty and added Brandon Myers to replace Martellus Bennett, who signed with the Chicago Bears. Also making the lineup is first-round selection Justin Pugh, who is penciled in at left guard, as well as Victor Cruz, who has yet to re-sign with the team for the coming season.

Both Johnathan Hankins and Justin Pugh are poised to start for the New York Giants at the start of the season, Giants.com writer John Schmeelk writes.

Pugh and Hankins were the Giants' first and second-round selections in the 2013 NFL Draft, respectively. Pugh, the offensive tackle out of Syracuse, should start Week 1, filling an immediate need along the offensive line.

Giants.com writers believe Hankins could make an impact right away and eventually take over for Linval Joseph, while Schmeelk believes he'll be a Day 1 starter, alongside Pugh.

"A lot of versatility. One of my goals every year is just coming in and improving my run game. I faced criticism my whole career in if I can play the run or I can hold up. I always just thought I got a chip on my shoulder or something to prove.

I?ve been on some pretty good run defenses in my time in the league. I think I?ve even been on a number one ranked defense back in the day. It?s just something to prove being able to play whether it?s inside or outside. Help out wherever. It?s a system that I?m familiar with, with Coach Nunn and some of the things we used to do back at Green Bay. I?m just excited to get out there and be able to contribute."

In Rotoworld analyst Josh Norris' latest mock draft, the Giants nab former Missouri defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson with the 19th selection in the first round.

Richardson, ranked as the No. 2 player at his position by NFL Network's Mike Mayock, sits only behind Florida's Shariff Floyd in terms of the best interior defensive linemen.

According to Norris, the addition of Richardson to Big Blue improves the team's interior pass rush. Though with his stock rising, it is not out of the realm of possibility Richardson is gone, in which case Norris expects the Giants to target UCLA's Datone Jones.

Aiming to add depth to their defensive line, defensive tackle Mike Patterson is paying a visit to the New York Giants.

Patterson, the longtime Philadelphia Eagle, was released in late February. The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick visited with the Detroit Lions shortly after, but no deal was reached.

Patterson's visit included a physical, according to reports, as Patterson's seizure during training camp in 2011 nearly ended his career. In January 2012, he underwent surgery to remove an arteriovenous malformation from his brain.

?I?m excited. It?s been a tough two weeks, going through so many different things mentally, with my family and traveling so much ? trying to figure out which was the best scenario. I?m glad that it?s over and especially with the Giants. This was my first visit and I had a good feeling here, especially talking with the coaches. Everybody was straight up, straight forward with me. I had a good gut feeling about New York.?

The Giants were awful against the run in 2012, surrendering 129 yards per game which was good (or bad) enough for 25th in the NFL. They desperately need to fill the middle of their defense with run stoppers. Last night, they signed veteran DT Cullen Jenkins in an effort to seal up that chasm. Our man Jimmy Kempski of Blogging the bEast tells us this transaction alone will not solve the Giants' problem....

On NFL Network earlier this week, Osi Umenyiora was talking about the Giants? disappointing season on defense last year, and the lack of pressure generated on opposing QBs. Umenyiora said that a major factor was that they weren?t able to stop the run effectively, and when you can?t stop the run, it makes it that much harder to get to the QB. He?s right.?Last season, the Giants held opposing offenses to less than 125 rushing yards 7 times. They went 6-1 in those games. They went 3-6 in games they allowed more than 125. The Giants have signed veteran DT Cullen Jenkins to to 3-year, $8 million contract

https://twitter.com/KimJonesSports/statuses/310891036622872576

From Rotoworld: The deal includes $3 million in guarantees. Although Jenkins is wearing down at age 32, he still recorded 30 quarterback pressures and four sacks for the Eagles a year ago. In New York, he'll slide right in as a projected starter at defensive tackle next to Linval Joseph, filling the shoes of free agent Chris Canty. Jenkins' arrival is a boost to a Giants' pass-rush that already has ends Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck in place.

Chris Canty was a casualty of the Giants budget cuts at the start of the off-season, but now it appears as if the defensive lineman has found a suitor.

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, Canty will visit with Green Bay sometime this week.

The Packers, a team that has lost its top defensive linemen like Cullen Jenkins and Aaron Kampman in free agency in recent years, are in need of help to bolster its run defense.
