Just one week ago, the Mets' season was seemingly near obliteration after hitting rock bottom when they were swept in Miami by the lowly Marlins last weekend.
Since then, however, the Amazin's have reeled off six wins in their last seven games to climb back up to the .500 mark. And now they have a chance to get back over that hump on Memorial Day with their staff ace and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner on the hill.
It will also be the club's biggest challenge to date, as not only are the Mets encountering the National League's best team to kick off this seven-game West Coast swing, they'll also be greeted by an elite starter and familiar foe in the form of Kershaw.
Though the future Hall-of-Famer doesn't reside in the NL East, Kershaw has become a nightmare for the Mets throughout the years. In fact, in 13 career meetings, he's a perfect 8-0 to go with a microscopic 1.98 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and .205 batting average against.
Mets regulars Michael Conforto, Todd Frazier, Adeiny Hechavarria and Juan Lagares are collectively hitting a brutal .138 (8-for-58) with just a single run batted in against the left-hander. Carlos Gomez is the only one who has had some success (.292, one homer, four RBI) in the matchup.
Of course, deGrom can respond by putting up his own zeroes, as he typically does no matter the opponent. He appears to be back on the upswing after limiting the Washington Nationals to just three baserunners in six strong innings of one-run ball. It was the fourth time in his last five turns in the rotation that deGrom pitched the Mets into the seventh inning or deeper while yielding no more than a pair of runs.
How I Would Bet This Game
It is extremely rare to catch deGrom as such a sizable underdog (+150 odds), but even so, while that bet may offer value, it's also not the wisest to have action on, given Kershaw's mastery of the Metropolitans throughout his career. Thus, I would advise the under more than anything with the hope that both aces contribute their usual work to pace a low-scoring affair. Kershaw and deGrom are both typically very consistent.
Should You Bet The Series?
The Mets are heating up and with that type of value (+195 odds) for them to take the series, it looks like a pretty good bet. A small wager on them is warranted here.
