In the Vancouver Sun, they have a transcript of what Canucks GM Mike Gillis said about his coaching search on the radio yesterday.

Gillis said of Dallas Eakins, who has had two interviews with the Canucks, that he has good views on the game and what it takes to be a coach in the NHL.

Gillis, while not directly praising Eakins, declared that his next coach will need to be able to develop young players since that is how rosters are constructed.

According to Darren Dreger, Dallas Eakins is reportedly on his way to Vancouver for his second interview with the Canucks about their head coaching position.

Eakins, who the Rangers have permission to speak with, is believed to be high on the Canucks list but not their number one choice.

Former Ranger, Islander and Devil Mike Motteau played part of this season for Eakins and told the NY Post that Eakins personality and even keel are one of the biggest strengths he has as a coach.

Last night, Darren Dreger tweeted that Dallas Eakins was in line for a second interview with the Vancouver Canucks for their head coaching position.

The Province, a Vancouver Newspaper, confirms that Eakins will get a second interview but says that the favorite for the job seems to be former Flyers head coach John Stevens.

Stevens is an assistant with LA and can't interview until their season ends.

Eakins has been with the Maple Leafs organization for the last seven seasons, the first as an assistant with the Marlies, two years as a Maple Leafs assistant and the last four as head coach of the Marlies.

His record as head coach of the Marlies is 157-114-41. He guided the Marlies to the Calder Cup finals last year.

10:17AM: It was reported this morning that the Rangers have been granted permission to speak with Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins.

Eakins played 120 career games in the NHL, in a career that started in 1984 as a 16 year old junior player and ended in 2004 as a 36 year old in the AHL.

In 1997, along with Mike Eastwood, Eakins was traded to the Rangers for Jayson More.

9:01AM: According to a tweet from Darren Dreger, the Rangers have been granted permission to speak with Toronto Marlies coach Dallas Eakins and former Canucks coach Alain Vigneault.

Vigneault still has two years left on his contract with the Canucks.

Dreger notes that Eakins is a contender for the coaching spot with the Rangers, Vancouver and in Edmonton as an associate head coach.
