Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis and Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki are working out with each other in preparation for the NBA Africa Game.

Porzingis had hoped for a day in which the two European basketball players could practice together on the same court.

"I'm sure it will help me out and improve my game, hopefully, unless Mark Cuban says no,'' Porzingis said to Berman in March. "Dirk is a guy who can really help my game. Hopefully I'll have a chance to work with him, a few days to get on the court with him and pick his brain."

Dirk Nowitzki welcomed his third child into the world on Friday, now the Dallas Mavericks are eager to welcome their star forward back onto the court.

Nowitzki has been out of action with a strained right Achilles tendon since November 4th against the Portland Trail Blazers. He initially hurt his Achilles in the Mavericks' season opener on Oct. 26 against the Indiana Pacers.

A lineup change delivered the spark the Dallas Mavericks have desperately needed. A matchup with the struggling New York Knicks could help them sustain it.

While the Mavericks return home seeking to build on a crucial win, the Knicks enter Wednesday night's meeting attempting to put behind another puzzling loss.

Displeased with his team's effort in Sunday's embarrassing 133-111 loss at Sacramento, Dallas coach Rick Carlisle shook up the rotation by inserting Dwight Powell as the starting center and rookie Justin Anderson in place of J.J. Barea for Monday's visit to Denver. The Mavericks got the message, halting a three-game skid with a much-improved all-around performance in a 97-88 victory, just their third win in 13 contests.

(AP) -- Chandler Parsons had 19 points and a season-high 10 rebounds while Deron Williams struggled in his first game against his former team and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Brooklyn Nets 91-79 Friday night.

Parsons led the Mavericks in scoring for the fifth time in six games and is averaging 24 points during that span. He appears close to a full recovery from offseason right knee surgery.

Williams, who sat out a visit to Brooklyn in December with a left hamstring strain, scored eight points on 3-of-14 shooting.

Brook Lopez scored 28 points to lead the Nets, who had a four-game winning streak in Dallas snapped. Brooklyn is 3-12 in January with one game remaining in the month, which included the firing of coach Lionel Hollins. >> Read more...

The Brooklyn Nets face the Dallas Mavericks on the road Friday at 8:30 p.m.

According to STATS...

  • The Mavericks defeated the Nets 119-118 in overtime in Brooklyn on December 23. Three of the last four games in this series have ended up going into overtime.
  • The Nets have had trouble keeping opponents from scoring in the paint this season; Of the total points allowed by Brooklyn, 44.1 (2094/4744) percent have come in the painted area.
  • Hitting a lot of three-pointers in a game has not proven to be a winning formula for Dallas of late; the Mavericks have lost their last three, and five of their last six, games in which they have made 10 or more threes.
  • Brook Lopez (19) and Thaddeus Young (20) have already combined for 39 double-doubles in 2015-16. That is more than the top two Nets' players combined for in an entire season since Kris Humphries and Deron Williams combined for 51 in 2011-12.
  • Chandler Parsons is averaging 25.4 (127/5) points on 58.7 (44/75) percent shooting (.600 (18/30) 3P%) while also pulling down 7.0 (35/5) rebounds over his last five contests.
  • J.J. Barea is shooting 43.5 (27/62) percent from behind the arc against non-conference opponents this season as opposed to just 27.3 (21/77) percent versus conference foes. That 16.2 percent differential is second largest in the NBA amongst players with 20+ 3PM versus both conference and non-conference teams (3P% vs non-conf teams higher).

Although he avoided the wrath of potentially angry Nets fans last month, Deron Williams' recent play has started to resemble that of his last two seasons in Brooklyn.

Williams is expected to face his former team for the first time when the Dallas Mavericks try to avoid their fourth loss in five games and deal the visiting Nets a 12th loss in 14 on Friday night.

(AP) -- Wednesday night's matchup between the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets should've been Deron Williams' first game against his former team.

A hamstring injury took care of that.

The Mavericks will likely be without their starting point guard as try to avoid a fifth loss in seven games.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and the Dallas Mavericks withstood a comeback attempt sparked by Kristaps Porzingis to beat the New York Knicks 104-97 on Monday night.

Porzingis finished with 28 points in his first matchup with Nowitzki, the German great he has been compared to for his perimeter shooting skills by a 7-footer.

The Latvian rookie made consecutive 3-pointers as the Knicks cut what had been a 23-point deficit to 101-97 with 43 seconds left, then blocked Deron Williams' shot. But Carmelo Anthony was called for an offensive foul as the Knicks were trying to work to get the ball to Porzingis for another shot, and Nowitzki followed with a free throw before Williams made two more to close it out.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had high praise when talking about Knicks rookie forward Kristaps Porzingis before Monday's Knicks-Mavericks matchup.

"Porzingis is the real deal," Cuban said, saying he wouldn't be a fad similar to Jeremy Lin's emergence (Dec. 7). "He's got some s--- to him. That's the difference."

Porzingis, the 20-year-old rookie from Latvia, has averaged 14 points and 9.2 rebounds through his first 21 games with New York. At 7-foot-3, 240 pounds, the Knicks drafted Porzingis with the fourth pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

The Dallas Mavericks are in New York on Monday to take on the Knicks at MSG at 7:30 p.m.

According to STATS...

  • New York lost at Milwaukee Saturday, 106-91. It was just the seventh time the Knicks have allowed 100 or more points in a game this season -- only four NBA teams have had fewer games.
  • The Knicks are 4-2 against Western Conference teams in 2015-16 after going just 6-24 against the West in 2014-15. Last year, the Knicks' fourth win against a Western Conference team came February 1.
  • The Mavericks won at Washington, 116-104, yesterday. They are now 3-0 against Eastern Conference teams on the road this season and 16-2 since the beginning of last season.
  • Dallas has won 10 of its last 13 games at Madison Square Garden since the 2002-03 season. Prior to 2002-03, the Mavericks had won just five of their first 21 games at New York all-time.
  • Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 18 points Saturday but shot 6-of-17 (.353) from the field. The Knicks are 7-3 when Anthony shoots .400 or better from the field compared to just 3-7 when he shoots under .400.
  • Wesley Matthews matched a career high with 36 points against the Wizards Sunday. He tied a franchise record with 10 three-pointers made (George McCloud, December 16, 1995) -- the most in a single game by an NBA player this year.

The Kristaps Porzingis-Dirk Nowitzki comparison is easy to make, especially since the New York Knicks rookie grew up modeling his game after the Dallas Mavericks' superstar.

Porzingis finally gets a chance to face his childhood idol Monday night, though Nowitzki will be trying to teach the youngster a lesson or two and help the visiting Mavericks continue their dominance in this series.

When the Knicks selected Porzingis with the fourth pick in this year's draft, the then-teenage Latvian was compared to several European stars, but the similarities to Nowitzki are obvious. Both are 7-foot forwards with seemingly infinite shooting range.
