The Giants and Jets are a combined 3-14, one year after going a combined 9-23, one year after going a combined 8-24. That's a 20-61 record over the last 2 ½ seasons, for a "winning" percentage of .246.

So no, the Giants and Jets don't match up particularly well with the rest of the professional football world right now. But how do they match up with each other?

In advance of their big showdown on Sunday at the Meadowlands, let's take a look:

Why didn't the Giants sell? 00:01:09
SNY Insider Ralph Vacchiano analyzes why the Giants didn't sell at the NFL trade deadline like they did a year ago.

The Giants have officially announced the trade with the Jets to acquire DL Leonard Williams, with the NFL trade deadline passing.

The terms of the deal were Williams in exchange for a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-rounder that could become a fourth-round selection if the Giants sign him to an extension.

"I'm just ready to bring some toughness, some pass rush, some run stop, everything," Williams told Giants.com's Michael Eisen. "Being a good teammate to the guys, being a good guy in the building on and off the field, just know that I am going to give it my all every day."

The Giants are 2-6, don't have much salary cap space remaining, and clearly are still in the midst of a rebuilding phase. So how does it make any sense that they'd trade two valuable draft picks to the Jets for an eight-game rental of the disappointing Leonard Williams?

The answer: It only makes sense if he's not really a rental.

It may be too early in the season, but it looks like the signing of OLB Markus Golden is panning out just the way the Giants had hoped.

One of the biggest concerns with this Giants defense entering the season was whether or not they had the personnel to create a consistent pass rush. In Week 1, that concern was even bigger with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott having all the time in the world to find his receivers downfield.

And then after Week 2 when the Giants couldn't get pressure on Bills QB Josh Allen, it had some frustrated with CB Janoris Jenkins saying he couldn't cover a receiver for 10 seconds -- calling out the pass rush.

Giants take DT Dexter Lawrence 00:00:38
New York Giants select a big plug for the defensive line in Clemson DT Dexter Lawrence. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano analyzes the pick.

Taking their quarterback in Daniel Jones at No. 6 overall, all signs were pointing to the Giants going after a defensive asset. Though an edge rusher was an obvious need and players like Montez Sweat were still on the draft board, the Giants decided to go with a big defensive force in Clemson DT Dexter Lawrence at No. 17.

To call Lawrence a force up the middle is an understatement. At 6-foot-4, 342 pounds, Lawrence was one of the top performers on the Tigers' dangerous defensive front that also featured players like Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins, and Austin Bryant.

So how will Lawrence fit in with the Giants? Just picture Damon "Snacks" Harrison 2.0...

Dave Gettleman was absolutely right when he lamented the fact we're living in an "instant gratification world" during his conference call on Monday. There's a rush to judge everything, a demand for an immediate payoff. Everyone wants to be first with a knee-jerk reaction or a juvenile social media take.

And so it was with the Giants' trade of Odell Beckham Jr. and, really, their entire offseason. Gettleman didn't get nearly enough for his star, some screamed. He has no plan, yelled others. Tweet by tweet, it was clear the world of keyboard warriors believed he didn't have a clue.

The first time the Giants organization seemed to really begin thinking about what comes next at quarterback after Eli Manning was about three years ago. They still had plenty of time back then, but seemed to understand it would run out fast.

Still, they have declined to address that need ever since -- at least not in the first round of the draft -- and suddenly they are standing at the end of Manning's road. He's 38 and his contract is up at the end of the season, but the Giants have no replacement ready because they have continually kicked this hugely important decision farther and farther down the road.

And yes, even now, they might do it again.

Is there a playoff team in NY? 00:00:47
SNY takes on the question... Could you make an NFL playoff team by combining players from the Jets and Giants in 2018?

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

This is a terrible time for New York football, with the Giants and Jets sitting on what feels like rock bottom. They are a combined 5-14 this season, and the playoffs are already out of reach. And they are a combined 13-38 (.254) since the beginning of 2018.

But while there may not be hope at the moment for either team, there is still some talent on their two rosters. If they could only somehow combine the two, they might even have the makings of a playoff team.

Giants trades, Giant questions 00:00:42
Pat Shurmur, Eli Manning, and Dalvin Tomlinson talk about the Giants making in-season trades, as their season seemingly slips away.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur wants to move on from the trades of CB Eli Apple and DT Damon "Snacks" Harrison that went down on Wednesday.

Why? Shurmur understands the business side of football, and like any head coach, he'd rather not lose sleep over things out of his control.

"We traded two players, and we're moving on," Shurmur said during his Wednesday press conference. "In our mind, we've got some guys that we feel like can step in and fill in."

Not only was this a divisional game with a heated rival, but this Giants-Eagles matchup at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night was viewed as the game to save the Giants season. Sense of urgency was the word thrown around by the team leading up to tonight, but unfortunately that isn't what was seen on the field.

The Giants lost badly in a 34-13 wallop that left fans speechless and sullen in their seats. With the exception of one dynamic rookie, the performance by the home team wasn't anything to be proud of. And to put it bluntly: What played out tonight was certainly comparable to the miserable group of last season.

So, let's take a deeper look at what happened at each position in the Giants' fifth loss of the season...

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur has much to do after gameday. He has to watch film, evaluate each player's performance, and most importantly, figure out what went right or wrong that week.

There is also the task of submitting plays to the NFL that coaches want clarification on, whether it's penalties or close calls. Shumur refers to these duties as "a handful of things" during his normal work week.

But, after a few questionable calls on Sunday against the Saints, his workload got heavier...

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: A week ago they had made so much progress. Then on Sunday, the Giants stepped back into their abyss.

Now, after their disheartening 33-18 loss to the New Orleans Saints, they are 1-3 and looking at the likelihood of yet another lost season.

Here's a look at how their specific position groups played in their Week 4 loss...

Come Sunday, the Giants will be looking to get consistent pressure on Saints QB Drew Brees with the obvious goal to get him on the ground. But they are going to need to be extra careful how they do that.

Over the past three weeks, the NFL has experienced many questionable roughing-the-passer calls (just ask Clay Matthews). But the Giants-Saints matchup will feature NFL referee Pete Morelli's crew, who have called a league-high six roughing-the-passer penalties so far this season.

And the Giants are well aware of it...

The Giants released their unofficial depth chart on Monday, and though it isn't set in stone, there are a few things worth noting.

Here are the five biggest takeaways from how this roster looks early on in training camp...

Giants take B.J. Hill 00:02:17
SNY's Jonas Schwartz and Rich Cirminiello break down the Giants' second pick of the third round of the NFL Draft, NC State DT B.J. Hill.

The Giants stuck with defense in the third round as they took N.C. State DT B.J. Hill with the 69th overall pick.

Hill played four seasons with the Wolfpack where he totaled 183 tackles (23.5 for loss), eight sacks, nine passes defended, and two forced fumbles.

The Giants took a defensive tackle in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft in Alabama's Dalvin Tomlinson. With Damon "Snacks" Harrison next to Tomlinson, Hill will have tough competition to see starting time next season.

Giants rookies TE Evan Engram and DT Dalvin Tomlinson were both selected to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team.

Engram, the Giants' 2017 first-rounder, dazzled in his rookie campaign. He hauled in 64 receptions for 722 yards and six touchdowns, while helping the Giants convert on 37 first down catches. He led all torched all rookie tight ends in that category as well as finishing third in receptions, and second in touchdowns behind Steelers WR Juju Smith-Schuster, who also made the All-Rookie Team.

Among tight ends throughout the league, Engram finished sixth in receptions, fifth in yards, and tied seventh in touchdowns with fellow rookie TE, Bucs O.J. Howard.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Jason Pierre-Paul missed practice on Thursday, but the team said it was not injury-related.

The defensive end was riding the stationary bike in the injury area at the start of practice on Thursday, before heading inside to work with trainers in the team's field house. It appeared that the trainers were working on his left shoulder -- which would make sense since he had a shoulder injury earlier in the season.

JPP had company on the sidelines, too. Three linebackers were also sitting out practice -- Keenan Robinson (quad), B.J. Goodson (ankle) and Devon Kennard (quad).

LB Keenan Robinson and LB Devon Kennard -- both suffering from quad injuries -- joined LB B.J. Goodson (ankle) on the stationary bike along the sidelines during the Giants' practice on Wednesday. Goodson has not played since leaving early during New York's loss to Seattle on Oct. 23 while Robinson left Sunday's game against the Rams.

LB Jonathan Casillas (neck), LB Calvin Munson (quad) CB Donte Deayon (ankle), OL Justin Pugh (back), DT Dalvin Tomlinson (ankle), LB Olivier Vernon (ankle) and DE Kerry Wynn (knee) are listed on the injury report, but were limited participants in practice.

Vernon has not played since Week 4 and Casillas has not suited up since Week 5. Pugh missed his first game of the season during Sunday's 51-17 loss to the Rams.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: If the NFL season ended today, the Giants would be picking third in the 2018 NFL draft -- their highest pick since they took linebacker Carl Banks third way back in 1984.

But if they somehow find a way to lose to the 0-9 49ers in San Francisco this Sunday, their first shot at the No. 1 overall pick in 52 years would be in play.

What would the Giants do with that unexpected gold? Would they grab their next franchise quarterback? Take the best tackle or running back instead? Or trade down with a quarterback-starved franchise for a boat-load of high picks over the next few years?

The Giants defense may have been on the field for too long due to lack of offense, but they are not using it as an excuse for allowing 19 points in their loss to the Cowboys on Sunday night.

In the first half, the defense saw 47 plays from the Cowboys as the offense couldn't get anything going. The unit, which many believe to be one of the best in the NFL this season, looked fatigued. However, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie didn't want to hear that after the game.

"At some point you have to suck it up," Rodgers-Cromartie told The Post. "You just have to find a way to get off the field. We didn't get off the field enough."

With Jay Bromley out with a knee injury, Giants rookie DT Dalvin Tomlinson may get the start in the team's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Tomlinson, the Giants' second-round pick of this year's draft, had a slow start in his first NFL training camp. But after studying his new playbook, he has vastly improved, and head coach Ben McAdoo is sure he can be effective in a starting role.

"He's a player that's played at a tremendous level in the college game," McAdoo told The Post's Zach Braziller, "He's come in, he's learned the system very well. He's good with his hands, he plays with leverage, he destroys blocks. We feel he'll be ready to play Week 1."

Starting in a season opener is nerve-wracking enough for a rookie, and even more so that the Giants play on "Sunday Night Football" to kick off their 2017-18 campaign. However, Tomlinson has played in prime time games like the FBS National Championship with Alabama this past January...
