Dan Boyle was on SportsTalkNY Radio on Sunday and said:

  • Coming to the Rangers "was worth it" and that it was an amazing team and organization.
  • On his time with the Rangers PP, "I think last year, if you were to go back last year, I got hurt in the first game of the season and when I came back the PP was dead last in the NHL and it took a little time but we went up to 5th at a certain point. We were clicking and I remember feeling really good about it and then we went cold and trailed off and I don't know where we ended up. This year was a little different. We struggled off the bat and with Keith here, he was handed the keys so to speak for pretty much most of the season. A PP is not just one guy, one guy can help, but it takes all five guys. I didn't come here just for the PP."
  • "It felt at times this year that we were the worst team in the league. There was just this negative cloud above us because of the expectations. We talk about it, the goal is to make the playoffs and then you start from scratch. We finished ninth overall in the league and that is pretty good. As far as failure, everyone sets out on day one to make the playoffs and then win a championship."
  • On his numbers with the Rangers, Boyle said that he didn't have expectations as far as points. All he wanted was a chance at the Stanley Cup Final."
  • He would have liked a bigger role and more ice time.
  • He knows he isn't the player that he was and that it sometimes it took him a little while to find his groove at the start of the season.
  • "when you are on a good team, which I thought this team was, I think one of the tough things, as individuals, is that everyone, whether it's Eric or Marc Staal, everyone is....there is only so much ice time. When you have a good team everyone gets a little less and sometimes it hurts the individual performance. At the end of the day it's about winning hockey games and that is all that I cared about and all that a team should care about. At times it was good and at times it wasn't. It was bittersweet."
  • "I'm certainly leaning toward retirement, it's way past the 50/50 point."
  • On his incident with Larry Brooks and the media on breakup day.
  • "Great group of guys and a very good hockey team that just didn't get it done."

Dan Boyle erupts at reporter 00:01:11
Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle goes on an expletive-laden rant at New York Post writer Larry Brooks at the team's practice facility.

Dan Boyle was on SportsTalk NY (via Reddit) on Sunday and spoke about his incident with Larry Brooks of the NY Post last week:

  • "I have been doing this for 18 years, I don't know how many reporters I have dealt with, people in the media, and I would bet every dollar that I own that I have 0 problems with 99.9% of them."
  • "Some of them I call friends and thank god for unlimited texting because my phone has blown up over the last few days. It's been overwhelmingly positive in my favor."
  • "To rewind a bit, Larry and Brett or whatever and there is probably one more guy that is in there, over the course of the two years that I have been here, I have never seen such negativity covering of the game and negative and destruction of individuals."
  • "Yes, I was upset about some of the stuff they said about me. More importantly I felt that I needed to be a voice for my teammates and I can tell you that from teammates and ex-teammates and guys from other teams and guys who have come through here and dealt with these individuals, it was overwhelming how many thank yous that I got for what I said and what they didn't have the courage to or couldn't say."
  • "I regret having said it in front of the rest of the media because 99.9% of everyone there didn't deserve to hear that coming from me and probably made them feel uncomfortable and I do apologize to them."
  • "I do not for one second take back what I said to Larry and Brett and I do not take that back for one second. The things that they have done and said over the past two years, the way that they go about what they do, I will disagree with you."
  • "For whatever reason, yes, some of the media follow and respect but there are plenty, and I won't throw anybody under the bus, that wouldn't do anybody any good, but there are plenty that don't. I think that with people talking about not taking it personal. Let me say the worst things about you for two years; you are allowed to say that because you have freedom of speech and freedom of opinion but if you turn the table for one second and I voice my opinion for 30 seconds, I can't do that. Freedom of speech goes both ways."
  • I respect most of the media, with a few exceptions of course, I have felt that I have carried myself in the right way over the course of my career. This was possibly the last time that I was going to deal with the media."
  • "I didn't think that I was going to blow up but I haven't spoken to Larry all year and then for him to come around on the last day set me off a little and I asked him to leave and he refused the wires got crossed a little and I lost my cool. I wish I could have done it behind closed doors and voiced my opinion out that way. It wasn't the case unfortunately and I apologize to the rest of the media that were there but not for one second do I apologize to him because I meant every word."
  • "I didn't read anything this year but friends and family do and that stuff filters through. I may not read it but somebody does and that negative stuff gets into the locker room and that is was pissed me off."
  • "That isn't good, that negativity and constant breaking down of individuals gets through. Not everyone has tough skin. I feel that I can take a lot and it wasn't so much me, but it just upset me that some guys get affected by that and it really bothered me."
  • "I feel that everyone has the right to their own opinion and as athletes we look the other way most of the time. I don't need to rehash a few different instances that I had with Larry, but they were personal for reasons that I don't need to get into. It should be water under the bridge at this point but it was deserved."
  • "He isn't the only one that has been negative about me for the last 18 years but you haven't seen me blow up on anybody else and pretty sure there is a good reason. It wasn't just about me but it was about my teammates and moving forward they will have to deal with him and maybe moving forward there is a lesson learned here. There is a way to cover the game with your opinion but a way to do it properly."

4:30PM: Vigneault said today (NYR):

  • On Dan Boyle being sick and the lineup, "I'm not sure what I am going to do there. I've got two issues, Danny- the last time he was sick it lasted a few days if you remember and Marc Staal is going to be a father tomorrow morning, we are not quite sure how long that is going to take. Once that is sorted out we will figure the lineup out."
  • Could a defenseman be called up, "I'm not going to call up a defenseman at this point. Marc's wife is being induced tomorrow morning. Last time it only took a couple of hours, I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will be the same this time...it's out of my control and if by afternoon Dan isn't feeling better and Marc is still busy we will have to make the call."

12:37PM: Ryan McDonagh said that he is ready to play tomorrow night against Chicago while Alain Vigneault said that he wants to wait until tomorrow to make the final decision. (Gross)

Who comes out of the lineup for McDonagh depends on two factors: Dan Boyle missed practice today with the flu and Marc Staal's wife is giving birth tomorrow. (Zipay)

Asked about his defensemen yesterday, Alain Vigneault said:

  • Ryan McDonagh: "I firmly believe that Ryan is on the right track as far as skating with the puck and making better decisions with it."
  • Keith Yandle: "I think Keith is coming along, there will always be moments in games where Keith is going to make a low percentage play that could be high reward but for the most part I have really liked his last 3-4 games since the Boston games, he has been more effective. "
  • Dylan McIlrath: "Dylan is a young D going through the process."

On Dan Boyle, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi, Vigneault said that he believes they can "be a lot better than they have shown us. Our transition and our breakouts start with Marc and Dan and Boyler and those guys, we need those guys to handle the puck better, no doubt."

Vigneault said that at this point in the season the injuries that Girardi, Staal and McDonagh had at the end of last year shouldn't be bothering them.

He said that the Rangers defense "will get better" and that if Marc Staal knows to make a better play than he did against Colorado when he forced a pass to Kevin Hayes and it led to a goal against.

Dan Boyle scored the deciding goal for the Rangers in the shootout yesterday in their win over Ottawa.

Alain Vigneault said that the Rangers have used Boyle before in shootouts and they knew he had some "pretty good moves."

he didn't know he would be chosen and that he hasn't been "that hot offensively" this season and that he just went out and took what the goalie gave him.

On his season, Boyle said "I have been hard on myself but at the end of the day it's about winning hockey games and when I get home at night, with the start that we have, it makes this a lot easier. I'm not who I was 10 years ago but I can still be effective out there and help this team and wins are pretty much all I care about."

On MSG, Boyle said:

  • On how special it is to do it in Ottawa, "not too many more times I am going to play here. I had some people in the crowd but more importantly rewarding the team and the coaches and getting the two points and not leaving a point out there."
  • On the shootout, "I didn't know. I haven't exactly been that hot offensively this year. I scored one in the Boston preseason game. You just go out and see what the goalie is giving you and I was able to get it through."
  • On his season, "I have been hard on myself but at the end of the day it's about winning hockey games and when I get home at night, with the start that we have, it makes this a lot easier. I'm not who I was 10 years ago but I can still be effective out there and help this team and wins are pretty much all I care about."
  • On the game, "We probably gave up a little bit too many chances in the first. I don't think we will be thrilled with the amount of chances but they are a good hockey team and pretty fast and we kept it fairly simple and chipped away. A big save here and there and a shootout win."

Boyle eventually hit the free agent market and was signed by the New York Rangers to a two-year, $9 million deal. Boyle took less money to play on Broadway, but the two years was exactly what Boyle and agent George Bazos had been looking for.

Boyle's arrival to the Rangers was celebrated, while Islanders' fans felt that the organization had once again been spurned by a big name free agent. But in the end, Islanders should be thanking Boyle for not signing and heading off to free agency.
