Dan Connor

The Carolina Panthers have signed LB Dan Connor.

From Rotoworld: Connor, 28, was released by the Giants with an injury settlement last week. He'll provide middle linebacker depth behind Luke Kuechly. Connor was a third-round pick by the Panthers in 2008 and returns after spending the first four years of his career in Carolina.

Good for Connor. His stint here didn't work out here because of neck 'burners' ?and he lost in roster roulette. In effect, this ends up actually being a swap of Connor for Jon Beason, which is a considerable upgrade for the Giants, I'd say.

Giants' LB Dan Connor addressed he media for the first time since he was detained at the Philadelphia International Airport on July 6th for carrying a knife in his bag.

The knife in question turned out to be a switchblade and it was socked away in a toiletries bag. Connor, who was on his way to a wedding, was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and released on his own recognizance. The incident is being chalked up as a misunderstanding. There has been no further repercussions from the arrest nor is he facing any league sanctions stemming from the incident.

The air is easier to breathe this morning. The sun is brighter, food tastes better and the sky is the limit. Giant fans got what they wanted yesterday: Victor Cruz' signature on a long term contract with their team.

The electric WR will be tangled up in Blue for the next six seasons. It is great deal for both sides. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Cruz did not get shafted here. As long as he's walking the streets of NYC, he's walking cash machine.

Giants linebacker Jacquian Williams is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered during the 2012 season.

The weakside linebacker missed six games last year due to the PCL injury is expected to help fill the void left by the now-departed Michael Boley -- arguably the most vital position among the linebacking unit.

During the first day of OTAs Wednesday, it was Mark Herzlich who lined up as the Giants middle linebacker.

It comes as a bit of a surprise as the team signed veteran free agent Dan Connor to compete -- and many believe -- take the job after Michael Boley was released and the team opted not to re-sign Chase Blackburn.

In related linebacking news, Herzlich was flanked by Spencer Paysinger and Keith Rivers, not Jacquian Williams.

In a Football Outsiders piece on ESPN Insider, the analysts suggest linebacker remains the New York Giants' biggest red flag heading into 2013.

FBO calls the current starting trio -- Dan Connor, Keith Rivers and Jacquian Williams -- a patchwork unit, which is the M.O. for Giants general manager Jerry Reese.

"For a team with such a rich a history at the linebacker position, it's hard to remember the last time the Giants had even one really good player in their linebacking corps."
FBO criticizes the Giants' off-season plan of attack to address its less-than-mediocre linebacking corps, failing to draft a premier prospect and signing Aaron Curry via free agency.

It is only speculation that Mathias Kiwanuka will play along the Giants defensive line, according to Giants.com, though general manager Jerry Reese did hint at the move prior to the NFL Draft last month.

"He will probably play more on the defensive line" this year," the GM said.

With the shakeup along the defensive line this off-season -- losing Osi Umenyiora to the Falcons -- Kiwanuka can serve as another pass rusher to complement Jason Pierre-Paul and Justin Tuck, who will line up at numerous positions up front.

Entering this past weekend's NFL Draft, linebacker was an area many speculated the Giants would need to address with young talent.

Yet the team chose not to draft a linebacker.

The Giants bolstered its offensive and defensive lines, added depth to the running back corps and secondary, and even added a pair of linebackers in the form of undrafted free agents Etienne Sabino out of Ohio State and Charles Dieusel of Mount Union.

The Giants signed veteran inside LB Dan Connor to a one-year contract. The former Penn State star will add much needed experience tho the Giants' young LB corp.

This of course means the Giants are through with fan favorite Chase Blackburn, who is also a UFA this offseason.

From Rotoworld:?Connor was a marked man in free agency, drawing visits with the Steelers, Raiders, and Giants. Connor was miscast for the Cowboys' 3-4 defense last season, but he'll return to a 4-3 with the Giants. He and Mark Herzlich will likely battle for middle linebacker duties, perhaps with a rookie from April's draft.
