Against Chicago last night, pending UFA Dan Girardi played 22:59 in the Rangers win over Chicago.

On MSG after the game, Girardi said "we will see what happens here, we will be working here the next few days hopefully and try to bang something out here but in the meantime it's all business and just do my job."

When asked about distractions and how he deals with them, Girardi said "I think it's pretty easy actually, away from the rink you deal with it and figure things out, when you get here it doesn't even come into my head. Morning skate or coming to the game it's the last thing in my head. I'm just going to work hard and let everything else figure itself out." (MSG)

"They say 99% chance that they trade Callahan and will trade Girardi if they don't get him signed, I have kind of come to believe Callahan but I don't believe Girardi. I really don't. I still think that Sather is playing a game and trying to grind this one down to the limit to get them signed by scaring them into thinking that they will be dealt. I just can't fathom them trading Girardi. Callahan I believe can happen but I think they need to find a way to get Girardi signed.? (James Duthie with TSN's Gareth Wheeler)

On Ryan Callahan, "Ryan Callahan seems unlikely even though he is the captain to agree to a contract to stay with the Blueshirts. 99% chance that he is gone. There are many teams in play. Glen Sather is asking a lot for Ryan Callahan.:

On Dan Girardi, "Dan Girardi, the Rangers are still pushing to get him re-signed to keep him away from UFA. My sense is that the Rangers love him and want to keep him. Dan Girardi very much wants to stay with the Rangers so they are just haggling over term and a little bit of money that represents the gap in this negotiation. That being said, Glen Sather is still considering the interest and their remains considerable interest in Dan Girardi. If Girardi isn't signed by the deadline I am told that there is no chance that the Rangers let him go beyond that without a deal."

On NHL Live this afternoon, Dave Maloney asked Bob McKenzie about the status of Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi.

On Ryan Callahan, "It doesn't seem that they are close but I do know that Steve Bartlett, the agent for Ryan Callahan, touched base with the Rangers today but I wouldn't suggest that it was substantive contract negotiations. Right now the two sides seem far apart. The sense is that Ryan Callahan is looking for a seven-year deal of upwards of $6.5 million per year, somewhere between $6.5 and $7 million per year. I think the New York Rangers are prepared to give him $6 million and maybe a bit more than $6 but maybe on a lesser term. We will see how this plays out. I know the Rangers have been kind of working on the deadline of trying to solve this before the Olympic break."

On Dan Girardi, "similar kind of situation. There is a little bit more optimism that they will get a deal done with him and there has been some dialogue over the last 24-48 hours on Girardi's contract but I don't think it's necessarily imminent either."

On TSN 1050 this morning, Mike Richards and Dave Bastl chatted with Pierre McGuire about the rumors that the Rangers may be willing to part with captain Ryan Callahan.

Bastl said that Callahan was John Tortorella's captain and in response, Pierre said, "I still think he is the New York Rangers captain. He is extremely popular with his teammates, he carries himself that way. The other day he dove face first in front of a shot when he had no need to against the New Jersey Devils when the game was firmly in the Rangers hands but he still did it. He leads by example and I think there is a lot of respect from Ulf Samuelsson, Scott Arniel and Alain Vigneault towards Ryan Callahan and his captaincy."

Pierre added, "the problem is that they are running out of cap space and they have Danny Girardi and Ryan Callahan that you need to get signed after you just signed Henrik Lundqvist to a gigantic deal. The cap becomes an issue for the Rangers."

Kevin Allen of USA Today looks at the pros and cons to the Rangers trading?Dan Girardi and Ryan Callahan.

He says that Callahan and Girardi represent the previous Rangers regime under John Tortorella, but that the Rangers would struggle mightily to replace either one if they were moved or left as free agents.

Allen says that there is a "league-wide romance" with players like Girardi and Callahan because of the intangibles that they bring and that if they become free agents they would be "among the hottest free agents. They would both get big offers."

In the? NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that it is up to Glen Sather to determine whether the organization can or wants to re-sign Dan Girardi and Ryan Callahan to contract extensions prior to the trade deadline.

Brooks says that if contract extensions for the pair aren't signed by the March 5th trade deadline, the team should trade both players in exchange for draft picks and prospects to help re-stock the organization rather then keeping them for a playoff run and allowing them to walk away without getting anything in return.

He says that while both players haven't played up to expectations this season, they will both get lucrative contracts where "demand will exceed supply and dollars will be plentiful within a rising cap."
